From my experience, there's no doubt that the friendlier you are to people in different countries, in general, the friendlier they will be back to you. Simon effuses friendliness - even a little joke about only knowing "Multumesc" in Romania helps to break the ice. All three rooms/hotels seemed fine especially for the price. Not sure how much the Barcelona hotel was but it looked considerably better than 1 star!

Years ago me and my mate decided to do something similar with the "love/short time" hotels around Angeles City Philippines, the cheapest one was around 3 quid for 3 hours back then and when the staff member opened the door to show us a typical room there were 5 cockroaches sitting on the bed!!! Lovely!!!
