Hey Tyler, I’m a firefighter and I just have to say that blanket is definitely fire resistant. Key word is resistant not proof. Not even my firefighting gear is fire proof and it burns about as easily as that blanket. Test a non-rated blanket and see the difference
@Vice3200
@Vice3200 4 жыл бұрын
The "fire resistant" means it is mostly wool and a spark from a campfire wont ignite it. A lot of lightweight camping gear will be destroyed in a few seconds if a spark from a fire lands on it.

Tyler...the "fire resistance" of the blanket is the fact that it isn't polyester or something that will melt onto your skin and fuse with your body resulting in horrible injury. It's not a fireproof sheet, brother.

@@Livlocalmartian I don't disagree. But when you're camping or hunting - wool is the best bang for your buck to sleep warmly and close to a fire. A lot bushcrafters and pack hunters (me included) will pack old school Army blankets for this reason. They're light, warm, do not develop wear holes as fast, regulate moisture more efficiently. and won't melt to your body. In all honesty.. most things smell pretty terrible when they burn! Airbags definitely do smell terrible too regardless of what you're wearing.

When I used to camp as a kid in the 90s and 2000s and 2010s, I had a Coleman lamp as we called it similar to that. I also had a 1 mantle lamp that had 1 bigger mantle in place of the 2 smaller ones (the lamp overall was smaller but provided about the same amount of light). If you camp enough, propane is more cost efficient when compared to large lantern style lamps that use C or D batteries or even rechargeable lantern style lamps.

Fire resistant does not mean fire proof it just means it is less likely to catch fire compared to a normal blanket. There are different levels of fire resistance but resistant does not mean proof. As for the dish knot tool the practicality of it is for when you need to make a knot but need it to be quickly and easily removed in an emergency, you have to remember battle box is for survival in a bad situation not for normal everyday use. In a survival situation you might need to quickly remove what ever you have tied up to either hide your presence or quickly get away from someone without leaving everything behind.

After you've attached the mantles to the lantern, and before lighting the lantern, you need to burn them so they become ash. Light them on fire; don't touch the match to them as you don't want holes. Once they turn to ash, then you light the lantern. Also, when re-lighting a lantern, you don't need to disassemble it; there are oval holes in the steel base where you can insert a wooden match to light it.

Those mantles are definitely reusable, the problems you had were user error as you suspected. My family's cottage used propane lighting for over 20 years and only had to replace a mantle once because someone tried to light it while drunk and touched the mantle, which gets extremely brittle and shouldn't be touched after it's been used the first time.
@Eidolon1andOnly
@Eidolon1andOnly 4 жыл бұрын
Not only that, but when you consider a weight to power ratio, a propane or gas lantern will last much longer than a battery operated one. Comparing the weight of a single green camping propane canister to an equivalent weight of batteries, the propane tank will give several hours of light for multiple nights, nearly a week at lowest setting, and give off a consistent glow. Battery operated lanterns are barely good enough for one night, maybe two before the batteries have to be replaced.

That blanket is to be used while camping so if coals pop out of the camp fire onto you, you do not burst into flames and its Wool because even when wool is wet it will insulate you from the cold compared to a normal blanket. think of the blankets that cowboys used to put on the back of their saddles, or bikers use while camping while on the road. Should have lit one of those matches you got with the kit and threw it on the blanket to see!

hell propane versions are a relatively new thing. when I was a kid, and up until not too long ago a colman lantern used white camp gas, and you had to pump them up after filling the tank from a can.

@@OtherThanIntendedPurpose Propane lanterns have been around since the early 70s. The first Coleman lanterns began production in 1914, and the first Coleman propane fueled lantern was in 1973. So a 59 year difference between the liquid fuel and propane fuel lanterns. So the first propane lanterns are 47 years old. So in the 106 years that Coleman has existed as a company, and mantle lanterns existing, propane fueled lanters existed just shy of half that time. I'd say they aren't relatively new.

For the blanket the reason it burned through is because you hit it with a blow torch it is for camping so if a piece of hot ash falls from the sky it won’t wreck it.

Pretty sure the blanket is fire resistant as in like heat or coals popping from a camp fire or near some sort of heating element, not accidentally laying on top of a blow torch 🤣🤣 love the video as usual 🤟🏻

If you cut the beginning of the match with a knife then strike it they seems to work better for me. The end seems to be extra protection.

The blanket is fire resistant probably meaning if your camping and its corner gets into the fire it won't catch on fire. It will burn not set you on fire

Tyler, Fire resistance is not fireproof it simply means that it will not continue to burn when the direct fire is removed

Just a little heads up, Your lantern socks can be used over and over again as long as there are no big holes in them, you should be able to put the match under the bottom plate, If you use the case to store and travel with the socks can last for quit some time ,but always keep a few on hand' . thank you for letting me get all this useless info out of my head, I'm felling better already .

Bro the point on the fish thing is for saving rope in a survival situation. If you tie a super tight knot you gotta cut the rope loose. If you only had a limited amount of paracord you could reuse it

The mantel sock thing is some kind of fabric with rare earth elements such as thorium and cerium dioxide. At first light, the fabric material burns away leaving a very thin matrix of the rare earth elements. It gets heated up by fuel and glows very bright in visible spectrum. Traditionally it uses kerosene or similar petroleum distillates fed by a pressurized fuel tank. Those are hard to light, you need to get the tubes hot enough to vaporize the fuel by putting some gasoline in the dish (the base where the heat shield sits), then the jet of fuel sprayed into the tube holding the mantel vaporises lighting the mantel. After that the heat from the mantel keeps the tubes hot. Eventually the gas tank rust through, the heat and pressure will sometimes cause it to fail rather catastrophically spraying hot burning fuel to everyone in the near proximity. Yay.

Fire Resistant is NOT fireproof. Wool is naturally fire resistant. It doesn't melt, it's relatively hard to catch on fire, and when little bits do catch, they extinguish rapidly. Also, that belt system is meant for a pack. Good ol' bedroll. I've seen plenty put onto quick latches and used rolled up as a pillow. Propane lanterns are finicky, and you should read ALL of the instructions before taking them out. There you learn little things like, once assembled, don't take the glass off unless you are replacing the mantles. You turn the gas on and put the match into the lighting hole. Also, I'd have to check the numbers, but a good can used to last WAY longer for the lumens any battery lantern could put out. It's also not that harsh, ultra-white light that the ultra-bright LEDs produce. Much nicer to the night vision. Back in the day, the fam did a long campout with 1 of the bigger lanterns. Used it every night. Never needed to replace mantles and we went through about 3 cans over the course of about 5 nights. If you treat them right, they work well and they last forever.
