I want to start catching Blue Catfish and the best way to do that is with a line drum, problem is they're $5,000 - $10,000. I decided to make a line drum out of the marina junkyard and I'm going to build it for free! The first version had some issues, but the second version works way better! The real question is, will the homemade junkyard line drum actually catch Blue Catfish?

Pro tip: If you want a piece of metal (gear) to expand, heat it with a torch. If you want to shrink it --- Freeze it. Great content!

#ProTip: 1.2 , @LukeMcFadden, if you want to freeze / shrink something, you can easily get into a freezer? Use dry ice on the part while it's still in place, the shaft, then heat the gear. Voila, it will pop right on. Btw the way Luke I've said it before and will continue to when it applies. I love your ability to engineer things out of necessity into something you can use. I am same way. I love re-purposing things and saving them from the landfill/scrapyard. Have Titanium 4 in 1 welder and Titanium Plasma cutter, will create!! Lol. Luke you remind me so much of myself. Why go buy an expensive piece of gear when you can build it yourself out of scrap virtually for FREE! Love the content, keep up the great work!❤❤

Luke is quite literally a modern day Da Vinci/Edison. History books will mention the ingenuity of a local crabber turned catfisherman and all of his "junkyard inventions." Its not long before Discovery hits him up with that show

I’d like to see him have his own show as well but as I’ve learned from other tubers, the show try’s to steer away from authenticity and more of a staged show. Wouldn’t want that to happen you know?

little tip from an old man , heat something if you want it to expand , freeze it if you want it to be smaller ,for example we freeze outer wheel bearing races before installing they almost fall into the axel housing when frozen , to get them out you run a bead of weld on the outer race face and that shrinks it once it cools , keep up the good work love the lateral thinking you adopt , only way to reach your goals

My father was a fisherman on the east coast for many decades....but that the East Coast of Queensland, Australia lol. He also fished the West Coast of Queensland aka the Gulf of Carpenteria as well as the Torres Strait, all.around the north of Papua New Guinea and the Great Barrier Reef all the way down to the Whitsundays. Your vids give me great memories of the amount of machines he fabricated out of junk and imagination. He used to use 12 volt windscreen wiper motors from old cars constantly, coz they are abundant and cheap or free, run in 12 volts so they're variable speed and reversible as well as having an incredible amount of torque. I'd highly recommend them, that way you don't have to worry about hydraulics or parts if it breaks down out in the middle of nowhere, coz you can always keep a couple of spares laying about and all you need is a 12v power supply and some wire and solder. It's easy to weld on bike cogs and use bike chains too. I could probably write a SHTF type book about all the things that you can do and power with just 12 volt windscreen wiper motors. (The Merlin was the engine of WW2 ....12v windscreen wiper motors will be the engine of the Apocalypse 😅)

1/2" or 5/8" copper tubing, wrap it around the muffler exhaust closest to the motor, without creasing. Put a bigger copper tubing to go around your hydraulic lines. 4-5 wraps around that. Seal both ends after filling with antifreeze. This will warm up your hydraulic fluid so it won't freeze or be sluggish. Or get a 12volt oil drum heater placed in hydraulic oil and run. From a West Coast fisherman to an East Coast fisherman. Let me know if it works for you.

Have you considered using a ceramic tile cutter for your line leveler mounted above the chain oval? Retain the vertical pin on the chain. Replace the tile cutter holder with a piece of 2 inch square rectangular steel tubing or round. Cut a slot on the bottom slightly longer than your chain pin travel to slip fit the chain vertical pin diameter. Add guide bushings to slip fit the guide bar diameters. Run your line above the guide bushings. GET TO WORK - CATCH THOSE BLUE CATS !

Little tip for winter, if your fishing shallow water use cheese sponge the oil of the cheese will leach better in cold water than standard cut bait, if using the cut bait I saw in your video go deep on bottom of drop offs and if you can find bait fish like small shade or menhaden set right threw them with the cut bait, you also need to be running 1/2 to 3/4 of a mile of line with 200 hooks per line to cover more bottom, just my 3 cents of 20years of commercial cat fishing, good luck brother you will get it

Awsome! Just a thought. Cut a piece of hose the length to go around each of the stainless disks on each side. Split it and fill with silicone push it all the way around the disk on each side let it cure and your set. No, worry of someone falling into or slipping down on the floor in rough weather sliding into the spool by accident while still spinning. Someone could loose a head that way. LOL Just a though and it won't be rough on the line.

I feel for ya pal. been there done that. Keep at it. Pro tip for you though. Freezing things makes them smaller, heating them makes them larger. to make that sprocket slip on to the hydraulic motor shaft you need to heat it. either that, or freeze the shaft. 👍

You need the line leveled driven directly from the line drum the ratio of drum revolutions will be directly accountable to the number of wraps of line around the drun from side to side , so if the drum has 50 wraps and the levelwinder needs 2 revolution of the sprocket to get from one side to the other then the ratio is 25 to 1
