My mother has used the "hack" with the vegetable bag since forever, I do to, but with a little difference, don't cut it off entirely, leave it stuck to the bag, just wrap it around and tuck it it under itself and pull it tight, it rarely breaks and works great.

I've actually been doing the final one for a few years. If a bag of sweets doesn't have a sticker to reseal, or if i put rubbish in an empty sweet packet and want to keep it shut, that's what i do. So technically i "came up" with that years ago, least for me i did. You just need stronger plastic and such for it to work better haha
