In the Shona (Zimbabwe) culture, one pays "damages" for first child only. The family cannot get damages from the 2nd child onwards. One can and is expected to pay "maredzwa" (repaying the maternal family for upkeep) for any child no matter how old the child is.

@PearlMgwenya he has to buy isbongo to show commitment… cause if both parents aren’t together and the mom is the only custodian of the child, she will constantly have limitations to the things she can do ngomtwana, ubabakhe engaziwa where he is. E.g travelling, you would need permission from the father, if the child has the dads family, you can’t make medical decisions as a mother if the child has the dads surname into ezinjalo. Now, you aren’t guaranteed ukuthi he will be voluntarily be in the child’s life engahlawula but atlst ukuhlawula it shows some sort of commitment in the child’s life + ukuhlawula involves 2 families . You won’t have to look for him up and down if there’s need for his signatures.I don’t know if you get it.
