I "think" its the UCH (body control module). It'd explain why the immobiliser is less decisive than a fly, the headlight switch has left the chat, and the windows falling asleep. It's a black unit under the glove box full of relays. If it smells like magic blue smoke you've found your culprit. Usually water getting into the car kills then off. To sort it if nothing else is fried toast, you'd need a matching key/key barrel/the transponer ring that goes around the barrel/UCH/ECU and I reckon that'd live again with a few gremlins.

I would get rid of the Clio and go for the Metro, that Metro sounds like a good one to work on with only 20k miles.

I think the Clio has come to the end of the road, Kev. As much as I've enjoyed seeing the Clio project and it would have been great to see it on the road again, whatever went wrong with it electrically has just put the final nail in the coffin for me. French and electrics generally don't mix. I'd bid it farewell and be proud that at least you gave it another chance to live on and did indeed extend it's life beyond where it would have gone to had you not bought it anyway. I'd be very happy taking on the Metro as they really are rare old things now and I do have a soft spot for them.

Anytime you do a jump start it’s best to have a surge protector - otherwise the immobiliser, wiring and ecu will be the playground for the gremlins.

A friend of mine had a MK2 Mégane, nice enough car but randomly when driving he got a cloud of smoke from under the dash... Car died. Turned out the main wiring loom had chafed through the bulkhead, shorted out and caused a small fire. Suspect something similar has happened here

The metro every day of the week, I was thinking as you said about French cars and their electrics problems. My current car is French built and every now and then the speedo goes to kmh and the info display comes up in French and this is on a 70 reg.

Like most others ,I would prefer to see the metro brought back to the land of the living Kev. French cars are just too much hastle when they have problems .Even purchasing parts is a nightmare with so many manufacturers supply their version of the the same parthence the difficulty of obtaining parts for these cars. So,The Metro for Me please.

@misterflibble97992 жыл бұрын
Could be a short circuit in or near the cable conduit where it goes to the driver's door. That way, one source of smoke would end up both in the door and under the dash. Have a quick look at that wiring; if that's the problem and it's an easy fix then maybe carry on with the Clio, if not, then cut your losses. Electrical problems like this can be a huge time sink.

You only need a new battery first, the check the UCH for burn markes, if that is good and the solderings are all good, check the relais in the engine for the engine management and clean all the wires that are for ground in the engine bay and tail lights. Ground wire from the battery could also need a new one. I solved all these problems and my car starts since then all the time! ECM gets confused quickly when the voltage is bad, thats why you get this no start issue.

The window control modules in the doors on renaults suffer from corroded/arcing/burnt connections causing the window to go up/down on their own and if aftermarket ones are fitted they don`t have overcurrent cutout and you will find the window motors fried

@michaelthomas36462 жыл бұрын
I would definately suggest like nearly all here of jumping into the Metro, I hope also you aren't doing negative jumper lead straight to negative terminal, as that can kill an ecu on a car, or cause it to short, and always connect negative last, and remove negative jumper first. mainly reduces the number of sparks, that can then travel through the wiring as a surge, while with your normal scrap cars it doesn't matter quite as much, it will prolong the life of the batteries. easiest way to remember is red for danger when black is connected.

One thought , I would like to suggest the main electrical plastic ignition switch that controls all the main ignition plus accessory drives and round up the fuses , if after this its a no go , then so be it . I'm not one to admit defeat when these can be checked in an hour. also , use you nose ! GIVE the suspected switches the sniff test. Strange after a jump start , but there was no error in reversing polarity -/+ ?? Good luck Kev
