Great example of overthinking a situation. It's simple, Marcus has underperformed for 2yrs either side of the last World Cup. He is on massive wages and contracted until 2028 (I believe). He is, simply putting it, a financial burden... not just a burden. What employer would agree to pay one of the highest wages in its organisation to an employee who is not doing the job? At £80k/wk it would be a lot more tolerable, based on his current performances. It's time to go if he can't turn it around.
