This is why I always chuckle. Take for example the Cartier Small Juste un Clou Ring - plain. It is 3.3g of 18k gold. It sells for $1320. Today's price of 18k gold is about $49.40 per gram. So the cost of that ring that they are basically pouring in a mold? Is $163.02 - I could have a jeweler make me similar for $320.00 - Jewelry is something where I will no longer pay the luxury upcharges. I know too well the cost to manufacturer and cost of goods. The margin they are making on it is insane.

Absolutely right, I was in the retail trade for almost 50 years and it's all so shallow, and yes it's a complete money making brainwashing. A dress sells for £500, the staff get 50 % discount. .then the dress is sold with a 10% coupon .... eventually goes in the end of season sale with a 30%.discount ..... suddenly it's as dead as a sequin in February.....Then we are on to the next big thing...

I hate when I go in to buy something very specific like a perfume and the clerk makes you feel awful when you don't buy the matching lotion or whatever. When you say 'no' the and the clerk rolls their eyes and starts treating you like nothing cuz they can't get any more out of you, it's disgraceful.

Yes, you absolutely are paying for the name! Some people are so stuck on labels they do not realize they can get the same or much better elsewhere. This is the price you pay for labels. We are the ones that are stupid enough to pay for it. If we all stopped, the prices would be much lower guaranteed. It's a name not a product. I like high-quality products, but what I don't like is paying for a name and a crappy product, which seems to be going on with several of these luxury houses.

I agree 100% Dacob!! When I got married, my husband and I went to the jewlar that he bought my engagement ring from to purchase the wedding bands. My wedding band, a thin yellow gold ring with half of it covered with small diamonds was approximately 500$USD. We went to Tiffany&Co and looked at a wedding band that was with the same description (thin with half of it covered with small diamonds), and it was 2100$USD!!!! You are paying for the name, which, in my opinion, when it comes to jewelry, it's not worth the price. I have a VCA dupe bracelet, and NO ONE can tell the difference, they ask me if it's Van Cleef, it's the sane gold and mother of pearl, with the vca logo that cost me a 5th of the VCA price and I knew it's not automatic (they didn't try to make think it was so it's not a fake)

I always cringe when people buy costume jewelry from designer brands. My family and I only wear 22k & 24k gold jewelry and real diamonds. I bought a 28g, 22k gold bracelet 10 years ago for USD 750, and recently, I asked the fine jewelry store, how much does similar weight of my bracelet cost now and they said about USD 2500++ depending on designs. And the best part is, 22k and 24k gold can lose all the shine and luster, bent and broken apart into pieces, but it will forever go up in price and will always be accepted for trade-ins with fine jewellers regardless of the design and condition. Won't ever happen with costume jewelry of designer brands that are just "plated" instead of being a solid gold/silver despite their prestigious names stamped on it.

@Z369. I never owned anything less than 22k so I can't compare 18k jewelry. But I've not removed my 22k bracelet since the last 10 years aka the first day I got it so I've basically worn it through gardening, cooking, BBQ, doing dishes, swimming/showering, exercise, dance, dirty sports etc. Same with my earrings. 22k gold + diamonds. Worn every day for years now. And they still shine and look brand new ✨️ that's the best part of solid gold instead of plated/vermeil materials - tarnish resistant and great for everyday wear for people like me who can't bother changing/removing jewelleries every time they want to do something 😁

When I was a kid (1970s), gold-plated was considered the “cheap” version of gold jewelry. I could buy it with my own teenage money. Gold-filled was preferred, but even that was considered cheap because it would eventually wear down. And this was in my working-class circles. 14k gold jewelry was the type that I as a teen would save up for, or that families would give as gifts for birthdays, Mother’s Day, etc. Even so, it was still affordable. I can’t believe the prices for gold-plated jewelry these days. I still think of it as the “cheap” kind.

It's the same with the champagne in store..oh you got to this point. Part of their marketing costs which are offset by the massive retail prices. This is a no brainer. I can't understand why people get upset if they aren't offered champagne. It is not a scam, it is basics of any commercial activity, marketing and P&L, people just do not think about this. Companies pay a lot of money to i.e. cosmetic stores for any kind of promotion in store, even stickers on the shelf to attract your attention, location of products on better shelves etc, so you are paying for the product to be sold to you, promoted and distributed. And you would think that it is in the interest of the store to put bestsellers on better shelves, hell no, producers just pay for this. P&G pays grocery stores for visibility of Pampers on the shelves too. Of course, nothing is for free.

I received a small leather good as a Christmas gift this year. I know a few friends who received the same star coin purse thingy as me. I've seen a diverse assortment of these small leather stars/coin purses given as gifts - basically resembling appendages of their 24C bags. I couldn't help but suspect they overshot production of these appendages for the number of bags they belonged to, hence they made them into gifts. lol.

They are selling a fantasy. It's pretty much the trick to selling and buying and when people shop, and especially women, they are not shopping for practical reasons they are shopping for the fantasy that comes with that product. I have always loved the Cartier tri ring, but the price is beyond ridicules for what it really is. I could buy a fake, real gold though, cheaper version for far far less, same ring just not made by Cartier. What always got me was the price of costume Jewely that Chanel seems to sell very well. I actually was just checking out cuff bracelets, one was Chanel, and it was Barbie Ish style, it is made from unidentified metal and resin, resin! It is $1300. It's cute as hell but expensive as hell for something made of resin. You are correct, nothing is free, and everything is calculated into the price, the experience. If you have the money and want to spend it and keep the brand exclusive, that is fine. Not me. I will just go to some thrift store, buy a resin bracelet for a buck if even that and design it myself cute.

It is not double standards. You genuinely like their perfumes, you know why you like them and you understand how they compare to the market's other offerings. It is an informed decision to buy them, you're not buying them for the snow globe or just brand soft power. That isn't being manipulated as a consumer. On the other hand, the person who buys say, the new Le Lion because it's new and because it's Chanel and expensive - that person is being manipulated even if it is a great perfume.

I think in some cases the retail experience can be very beautiful and can remain as a special memory too. Like when you go on a dinner to a special fancy restaurant for example. The expensive over priced food will be digested in a few hours and expelled out of your body so why pay much more rather than cooking cheap at home? We pay for the memories that come with certain experiences… thats what luxury is mostly about… a perception and feeling… a memory…

Everything in life is marked up that how capitalism and business work. Nothing you have purchased in life from a pack of gum to a car was ever near the price is cost the merchant so jewelry and designer clothing are no different. A pawn shop is not a good barometer for value because they want to buy everything cheap as possible from desperate people so they can mark it up. Highend jewelry has some of the lowest depreciation rates is basically parking money, you can 90% sometime make money depending on the piece and how long you keep it.

I liked this video and, generally, couldn’t agree more. However, this concept specifically was misleadingly explained (or just poorly understood). Any business on the planet deducts expenses - it is not a “loophole”, and I highly highly doubt dust bags are under advertising expenses. Moot point, because the cost of producing the bag, the cost of materials (cost of goods sold) is also an expense against their revenue, reducing profit, and thus tax burden inherently. ANY expense will decrease tax burden bc it’s decreasing profit. With that said, these companies have done the math to show that spending money to produce and distribute “freebies” actually makes them (the company) more profitable. Not at all bc of taxes, but because it contributes to the “luxury” allure that allows them to charge an obscene amount in the first place. So yea, take the freebies, but don’t go thinking that the dust bag is some crafty tax loophole. It is not.
