My Story
My name is Noah and on May 18 2011, I had a rare reaction to a medication called VIVITROL and consequently, spiraled into a suicidal depression with depersonalization and anxiety. I lost 25 lbs in 4 weeks and was in full panic or near panic for 8 weeks straight mixed with the darkest most painful depression I cold have ever imagined. I immediately could not work and had to move in with my parents who, along with many siblings and friends, had to watch me 24/7 as I was a danger to myself. Eventually I was hospitalized in the Psych Ward for a week. Getting through each day seemed truly unbearable and I knew I would surely die. I have been put on many many different doctor prescribed SSRI's SNRI's Tricyclics, mood stabilizers, anti-psychotics, holistic meds, acupuncture and even a form of shock therapy called RTMS. I barely saw any improvement in my condition for a full year. It was decided I had treatment resistant depression and I spent nearly every moment in tears. Weeks after starting my newest round of medications (Seroquel & Nortryptaline) as a last ditch effort, I had my blood drawn for possible hormone imbalances and my Testosterone levels came back 200 ng/Dl and 150 ng/Dl. The average 25 year old male has 750 ng/Dl. With this discovery I had an explanation as to why I was not getting better and why I might be so so sick. The symptoms of Low T are very similar to those of major depression. I started legally prescribed testosterone replacement therapy soon after and have been checking in with the world and documenting my experience with treatment as well as giving my insight and perspective on various topics of mental health. I am blessed to say that I have slowly, over the last 6 years, been improving and becoming more stable which I never thought to be possible. My low T manifested itself in the form of Major depression, anxiety, and depersonalization/ derealization for over a year. Treating my low testosterone has been 1 HUGE part of the puzzle but I have had to continue to work hard to hold on to my mental stability with many set backs. Gaining some mental stability back is nothing short of a miracle as I was near death for what felt like forever. I do not consider myself to be totally healed yet but I am closer now then ever before and aim to use what I have been through to help or at least offer support to others in need I was able to successfully come off my Seroquel and Pamelor.
I work out all the time as a part of my mental health recovery!!! Weight training and all kinds of cardio rule much of my free time and I also share this on my channel.

Noah as a kidney cancer survivor I myself have also been there waiting for death to knock on my hospital door. It's absolutely the most horrifying and humbling situation one will ever experience! I ended up losing my right kidney but I'm fine now as you will be also! It takes a strong man to admit his flaws and weaknesses and you do a great job of both at the same time being humble and making all of us feel better about our day go day bullshit we encounter! Much love man and thank you for all you do! If you ever need anyone just know I'm here for you also not just as a fan but as a brother in life!

I’m 18, and last year I had rhabdo. My ck level was 180,000 and the doctors were surprised that my kidneys weren’t damaged and that I was able to walk. I’m so happy that you are doing good. God is good🙌🏽

Oh my god I saw the thumbnail of you in a hospital bed with the gown on and my heart dropped. And while I am so sorry to hear about what happened, I was a bit relieved that it was a physical problem and that you didn't have a relapse with your depression or anything. You're a big part of my daily dose of positivity and I would have hated to see you go through that again. Not to say that this isn't horrible and a serious issue. I'm glad you're getting treated and I hope you better soon. Please be careful, love.

This has been one of the scariest and most humbling experience of my entire life. Even now I write this while sitting in my hospital room with an IV in my arm. Listen to your body everyone and be very careful trying new movements. Better to scale and take it slow until you know what your body can and can't do. CrossFit has been a wonderful journey and I have never had anything like this happen before. I will use this experience to stay more safe going forward and help others do the same.

bignoknow Your story hits so many tones of the time I got Rhabdomyolysis. I also did a very strenuous workout on my chest, followed by alcohol and worked the same muscles again the following day, after little sleep and dehydration. Note I had not worked out in a long time, therefore pushing myself on the same muscle group over two days, plus alcohol caused my muscles to rapidly break down. I had the dark coloured urine and extreme pain in my chest, accompanied with swelling. Got took straight into hospital with CK over 2000 like you and spent a further 5 days on IV fluids. Unfortunately I already had a kidney problem, which worsened it to the point where I'm currently at 16% renal function and have been placed on the organ transplant waiting list. My renal consultant also told me a story about someone who drank alcohol and ran a half marathon, ultimately resulting in them getting rhabdomyolysis. I think people need to be aware that hydration is absolutely essential when working out. Like you say in your video, listening to your body is absolutely paramount, it does it's best to let you know when it's suffered and needs to rest. I hope these comments find you in good health. I’m sure you will disagree… but for all of its good & there is a lot of it… CF is bad. I did it for 2 yrs. I learned tons… I got really strong. But it destroys your body. And the cult like atmosphere is creepy. I know it’s fun going there… but listen to your body bro. Feel better. Heal up. Good luck.

It certainly must be done carefully and I learned that the hard way. Awareness and respect for your body and individual abilities mixed with various safe movement over speed in weight is key going forward. CrossFit has been one of the greatest blessings of my entire life but clearly has it's pitfalls and I fell deep into one of them. I will use this experience to educate others and keep them safe in their fitness journey as well as myself going forward.

It can be bad at bad boxes and if you go all out all the time. I pace myself, push myself and go all out when it makes sense at my CF box. I don't care about winning. I care about my health and physical fitness, and when done my way, CF is relatively safe.

Al Duarte admittedly, I may had had a shitty box (I think they were decent but not the best) I did pace myself tho. I never cared about finishing 1st or even put my numbers on the board. And I still damaged my body. ~ the way it worked for me was after I quit cf… once I began working out on my own… after taking about 6 months off… I then noticed several new aches and pains in my body, my knees, my elbows specifically. And I completely attribute those to cf

I'm an old 70 year an old once gym rat since a teenager. My dad was naturally a strong person (coal miner) that would tell me " son you have to let your muscles recover from intense workouts! Your muscles are like a piece of meat: if you take a hammer to them and beat the hell out of them they will become a piece of destroyed mush." Back off a little and you can still enjoy the endorphins and not damage yourself beyond repair. I've been so sore I could hardly walk up a flight of stairs. Now an old fart I realize I should have included my training to other sports like golf, swimming, volleyball, archery and so on. Then I could say I'm truly cross fit. I bet you could really be good at Judo. Get well and don't be so hard on yourself. Your pal,

Wow!!! Something similar happened to me when I over trained few years back. Long story short I suffer from Graves’ disease and have irregular heart beat and was stupid and kept over training until I had heart failure and was hospitalised for days. - lesson learnt - all the best on your recovery

Recently was hospitalized with Rhabdomyloysis myself, CK level was over 50,000 at the time I was admitted. Spent 6 days hooked up to the IV. Looking forward to getting back active, terrifying experience.

I'm sorry you have been dealing with all this. Much sympathy and prayers for you I had to go in for gallbladder surgery and I also had the catastrophic thinking about possibly dying. I used to crossfit. But I didn't want injured - so I took private lessons with the crossfit instructor - on technique. Unfortunately his ego got in the way - on practising deadlift - he said 'you can lift more' and proceeded to get much heavier weight - I said no, but he ignored that and said try anyway - when I lifted, I was thinking on the weight - not technique. Now I have a permanent click in my neck and pain, as I've damaged the disks. Crossfit produced great results, but it injures many people. I would not recommend crossfit to anyone, and that's just a fact. I'd be interested to see if there were any numbers on crossfit injuries, compared to other 'sports'. I expect it would be top. Do this heavy exercise, as quickly as you can - not best way to control technique.

We can feel so vulnerable when in hospital, no wonder u had anxiety! I felt the same recently, only i had cellulitis. You've been faced with your mortality, never a comfortable experience. On the other hand, at times like this we realise how loved we are. ✌❤

Your authenticity is truly admirable, I'm been following you for a while and sad to hear that you had this issue. Someone other said nicely about training in comments "its a marathon, not as sprint!" and that's a common problem for so many people, including myself. I know how you feel brother! Today makes day 7 in the Hospital. I did the Murph and I weigh 230 and the100 pull-ups destroyed me. I couldn’t extend my arms for 2 days and finally on Sunday night I decided to do some research Mid day Monday morning went to the bathroom and my urine looked like pepsi!! I went to the ER and they got me back pretty quick my CK levels came back over 100,000 the nurses said they have never seen anything like it before and someone not be in renal failure and on dialysis!! It’s truly a blessing From God I wasn’t dead! My levels as of this Morning day 7 are down to 5,000. Praying I can get out of here soon and spend time with my newborn and wife!! Hope things are going great for your brothers. Gods good!! 🙏🏼

I had this same experience! I worked out and when I was done I felt dizzy and had to pull the car over. My buddy took me to the ER because I was panicking !! Turned out it was what you had. I stayed in the hospital for a week but I never came out the same. I felt so weird when I left the hospital. Like extreme brain fog I have anxiety and panic attacks almost every day. I rarely leave the house only when I have too i guess I got traumatized.. and I never worked out again it’s been 4 years .....

I have followed you on and off since your testosterone cypionate days. I've been on it for about a year myself. I was NOT doing crossfit when I started following you. I was doing HIIT at OrangeTheory Fitness, as well as traditional weight training at LA Fitness. You influenced my decision to split the core of my training between HIIT and crossfit. Now, I do these two things, along with olympic weight training, traditional weight training and a run club (about 10 activities a week lasting about an hour each). I do not look at crossfit as a competitive sport. I view it as a way to become thinner, stronger, faster,... basically healthier and more physically fit. I compete with myself mostly. I take days off when I feel I need to. I take weeks off when I feel I need to. Overall, I keep getting better and feeling better, so that's what counts for me. Thank you for reminding me to leave my ego at the door. Most importantly, get well soon.

Wow MAN, very, very scary. So big of you to allow us into your story at this moment. You so kind to remember both of the good women in your life, right there by your side. But, you were smart to look for HELP and avert a serious crisis with your physical health never mind adding to your emotional well-being. It’s interesting, that when we don’t want to die, the fear is paramount, you can feel your blood pumping through you and containing yourself on ever level is mind altering it brings you to your knees in prayer. Then the release of knowing something bigger then our own selves has held you together to be your better self, the strength of this better self that in the future you will again bring forth in you time of need. Make no doubt of it, you’ll have to call forward this same strength ( that you thought foreign to you) in the unseen future and you will now know from this ordeal amongst past ones that you’ve not only endured but risen up to be restored. Restored and renewed. Visualization. Lisa. You must get better, we’d be lost without you ; )

I was getting crazy on the Gym and I saw your vids and stopped right there the regular thought of mine "no pain no gain" or "go hard or go home" and star thinking "rest!, push your self but to a safe point". I got rhabdo from doing pullups during CrossFit too but about a day and a half after the workout, I was peeing blood and I knew that it was time to go to the ER. My hospital's lab was able to detect CK levels up to 100k and I far exceeded that. I spent 6 days hooked up to an IV in the hospital and I was released when my CK was at 23k with the understanding that I would drink tons of water at home during the following week and I had to follow-up with my PCP within a week. Luckily, my CK was down to 9k after spending a few days at home and miraculously, I didn't have any kidney or liver damage from this episode. With all that being said, I had rhabdo just over two years ago and I can say that I've eperienced severe degredation in strength, endurance, and general ability. I used to run half marathons, bike long distance, and do triathlons and I simply can't do them anymore. Working out is a miserable experience post-rhabdo. They say that I fully recovered from rhabdo and from a clinical sense (meaning no kidney and liver damage), that may be true but I know that there's no way that I'm back to where I was before rhabdo so, in essense, I have not yet fully recovered. There are very few things that I'd go back and do differently in life but if I could go back and talk myself out of joining that CrossFit gym, I would jump all over that opportunity.

@B Schub I had rhabdo years ago and still have a lot of issues too but have found that adding glutamine to my diet has helped. Read about it some and decide if you think it would help you too and let me know. I'm curious if this will help others.

You were not being dramatic at all. It is very real and very scary. I’m glad you could admit you were afraid and went and got help and checked out for your sake and your wife! You are brave. I’m glad I came across this because I have never heard of this and being a person that workouts sometimes way too intense, it’s a good thing to know. I think I could have had this once and just got lucky and it worked itself out because what I experienced in my legs was just what you described! But it’s all good now. I know now though if I ever get to that point to go get checked out! Esp if I can’t walk!

good lord. moderation in everything (including exercise). Sorry if I repetively comment this on a lot of your videos, I really think you have some unresolved trauma from childhood and/or your past that needs to be healed. but at least you know your body is strong! it stayed strong for you through this and I'm sure it will keep going :) keep on healing, its a journey for all of us.

I can definitely understand the reassurance part. I'm not a RN/RPN or MD but working in an ER, some people are just so wide eyed because of the pain and concern. It was the beginning of the process, being in the ER waiting to see a doctor but just using relaxing words and heated blankets or cold packs, the relief people expressed was like having worries put on the side.

Thanks for telling us about this man. This is scary and I think it’s important for people to know this is a possibility. There have been some times when I’ve overworked my body doing exercises i was no where near prepared or conditioned for and this could’ve easily happened to me I’m sure. I’m getting into shape again right now and I’m a long way from doing the type of exercises that would put me at risk of this but it’s still good to know and be mindful of!

I’m not really into fitness or anything but I’ve had Rhabdo before . I’m a recovering heroin addict and being homeless walking the streets of Kensington, Philadelphia for many days straight with no fluids caused Rhabdo in my legs . I know what you mean when you talk about the pain from this . I was in a wheelchair for days afterwards . I’ve been clean from all drugs and alcohol since . It scared me straight into sobriety. I’m glad you’re doing better . God bless .

Greetings from England Noah, i had never heard of this condition. Speedy recovery. Your videos on Depression are how i found your channel maybe 3 or 4 years ago. Ive added some of them to the huge Playlist i have put togther about Depression in the hope they may be useful to myself and others. They look at depression from all angles, and if anyone is going through depression then look for 'Playlist' once you are on my cnhl and look for the two folders titled 'Understanding depression'. Glad that you are feeling better. Rhabdo is something that all 'gym people' are very aware of..but think that it will never happen to them. You are going to be okay dude..take a deep breath and try to relax. I've stumbled across a lot of your videos throughout the years and I've noticed that you don't handle stress very well. I'm not trying to put your down or anything..I'm just saying that things seem to make you very emotional and you struggle with 'holding it together'. It takes a brave person to share your fears with the entire world. To that, I salute you. Get well dude. Hang in there.

Thanks for being so straight up as you always are big guy!! Being an old man (amazing I made it this far...lol) the one thing i've learned is Train hard, Party hard=Die hard!!! Hunter S. Thompson use to say "But the ticket, take the ride" and I live by that! We can do whatever the hell we want as long as we are willing to pay the price. You and I use to speak on fb (which I no longer use) but I continue to follow and support you here. You're right, listen to your body! You have an amazing opportunity to take stock right now and learn moderation is key! People scoff at Crossfitters all the time but their training blows me away. I'm man enough to say I couldn't survive it...lol I like to have the odd beer, train hard in the gym and eat and live as healthy as possible. I try to train in a way that will allow me to still train and look good well into my 60s!! I NEVER wanna be that guy that talks shit about "Back in the day I use to...." because my bodies all fucked up and I can barely lift my pants!! It's a marathon brother, not as sprint!! Hate to break it to ya, but you're young and as long as you SLOW it down your best days are still ahead!! Stay real and take care of yourself Noah!! Cheers

I was also hospitalized for Rhabdomyolysis when I was in college, about 10 years ago. Same deal, overtraining biceps and back (not CrossFit, just traditional weight training), arms swelled up like balloons and my kidneys were actually failing when I was admitted, (urinating blood). I was put on an IV for a while just like you were, and luckily I didn't suffer any long term damage. It really spooked me but also made me realize my own physical limits. Sorry to hear you had to go through the same experience. Glad to hear all is well now :)

bignoknow Also, one thing I forgot to mention. I still am weight training to this day, I don't go with any less intensity as I did before, I just learned not to push myself past failure on exercises my body isn't accustomed to. If I work something into my routine regularly, I'll push myself as far as I can, and I never have issues. I remember having to wear a hoodie with pockets on the front because I physically couldn't get my arms past 90 degrees lol. I can have a laugh about it now but it sure wasn't funny back then. One thing I noticed after the IV came out and I got out of the hospital was that I lost a noticable amount of muscle mass. I guess the silver lining is that no one can really tell you that you don't work hard in the gym!

My son is currently in the hospital with this, also just from lifting weights. His first CK level was 67,000. Still high after a couple days on IV. He urinated brown twice which prompted us to go to the doctor. Thanks for sharing.

Very sorry to hear this happened to you. One thing I would say as a nurse, they're not interrupting you. They are caring for you haha. If you were in a condition that they didn't have to disturb you they wouldn't man! I promise. Speedy recovery dude!

I’m currently in the hospital right now from rhabdomyolysis. My pee was almost black and my kidney levels are through the roof. Luckily my kidneys aren’t damaged at all and I’m still getting a ton of fluids to try and get it all out. My labs are over 40,000 and they don’t go above that here. It has been over 40,000 for about 2 and a half days now. I’ll be making a video like this tonight on my experience.

I appreciate you for sharing your story. I too was in the hospital for Rhabdo a year ago around this time. I experienced pretty much everything you did except after being sore for a few days I noticed my urine was unusually brown. Or the coke colored And boy when I say how worried I got and how quick I googled it. I never knew rhabo existed until I google brown urine I did more and more research and everything associated with rhabo was everything I experienced. Long story short the ER at the hospital was careless and a very depressing moment sitting there on I.vs. I noticed All the Other stories like yours and other youtubers CK levels usually a 20k 40k? ..My CK levels came it at over 200,000!! Smh let that sink in I was hospitalized for maybe 9-10 Days and thank God for the doctors and nurses I had by my side..I couldn’t be anymore humble than I am now.. and today I still haven’t been able too work out, drink or do anything the same like I feel like I lost so much muscle because of how high my CK was. Just thought I’d share my story..people need too be aware of this !

brah , i think my nephrologist may just have mentioned your case to me . A few crossfitters here in the PNW recently died with rhabdo. She did tell me that trt taxes my kidney and to not use creatine again. You do Not want to lose your kidneys yall =\ i think Way more bodybuilders,powerlilfters...etc Need to check their kidneys/blood levels yearly no matter if you feel healthy . With our super high sodium and protein intake in the west adding in heavy muscle breakdown of lifting tons can often be asking too much for our little fist size filters ,particularly for ppl of color apparently . Youre SO Right that we need to treat our bodies like the temples they are . The more we know that better we'll do

Sorry to here that. Open workout 16.4 gave me Rhabdo. I went to the hospital the same night because the lower back pain I had was so bad. I spent 4 days in the hospital using IV bags (to flush the dead muscle fibers out of the blood stream). I had a lot of pain during my time in the hospital and for several months after during the rehab process. I hope you get well soon!! Stay hydrated when training Crossfit!!

Sounds like the worst part of rhabdo is over and you're recovering. Just take it easy and get better before you pick up crossfit again. You sought treatment right on time, your kidneys are good, and the doctors are flushing out all the s**t that might clog those up. God has his hand over you.

I'm in hospital right now with Rhabdomyolysis. My CK levels were at 48,000 when I came in. Now it's below 20,000 (last night's reading). Waiting on labs this morning. Fortunately I caught it early. I'm okay now. Should be released today. Kidneys are great. Liver is great. Scary experience though. Been in hospital about 36 hours. Came in about 38 hours after my workout (also drank alcohol that night after my workout, not heavily, but enough apparently). Full recovery for me, thankfully. Doctors & Nurses have been awesome!! Moderation when it comes to workouts from now on. Definitely going to get alcohol out of my life. Lifestyle changes after this experience for sure.

Damn, sorry to hear this Noah. I had never heard of rhabdo before but it explains why in the past I felt so sick when I had overdone it training and couldn't move or think straight. I put it down to lactic acid build up and never sort treatment. Guess I was lucky. Take care mate, sending prayers!
