I just attended my first reptile expo today. I spent so much time looking at all the spiders and wanted to get all the jumping spiders so bad. But I decided to start small, really small. I got isopods, rubber ducky and giant yellow spots. Plus a batch of spring tails to keep everything clean. Soon I will be overrun, I just know it.

I recently found a rather unusual wolf spider that I and many others(including my arachnid biology professor) have had a lot of trouble identifying. It’s fairly small and almost solid black, with no visible pattern but a bit of brown on the parts of its legs close to its body. Its abdomen is almost shimmery, akin to silk. We know for sure based on body shape and eye placement that it’s some kind of wolf spider, but appearance and temperament wise it just doesn’t match any that any of us know of, especially none known to be in the area, that being Stillwater, Oklahoma. So far the best idea we have is that it could be a melanistic/equivalent Carolina wolf spider, but that doesn’t quite explain its shape, or… Personality. Also, we think it’s a male, but aren’t positive. It’s EXTREMELY aggressive: threat poses at everyone, tries to strike through the sides of its current terrarium, runs out from hiding at the slightest movement with fangs at the ready. The display is kinda impressive to watch. It even envenomated my lanyard(bit it and left two conspicuous wet spots where the fangs went through) when I caught it(very glad I used the lanyard to nudge it instead of my hand), and bit the hell out of an unfortunate classmate yesterday. He was given ample warning that this spider was extra spicy, but he works with centipedes and was just really interested in seeing it up close out of the container. Today he reported the three bites he got were very mild; he was nonetheless impressed by its audacity, considering even the OBTs he regularly works with haven’t so readily bitten him. I nicknamed the spider Wriggley because when I found it in a parking lot, the only sort of container I had to capture it in was an old Wriggley’s Juicy Fruit gum box I’d forgotten to throw away for like two months. It’s also been suggested the spider instead be called Carolina Reaper, to really capture its spicy temperament and also because possible Carolina wolf spider is the closest thing we have to knowing what manner of eight legged beast I’ve found. If this sounds like anything anyone here has heard of in the hobby, or if someone could point me toward a person who might know more, I’d appreciate it! As would several others in my arachnid biology class. We’re all enamored by this cranky mystery beast of the spider variety.

Have you checked if it is the Eastern Parsons Spider? They are near full black in most cases and similar shape they can be aggressive. I have kept them successfully.
@avanelletheclockfriend251518 күн бұрын
@@AShoreThing Just took a look, no. It doesn’t have the wolf spider shape. Again, we’re certain it’s some kind of wolf spider. Wish there was a way for me to send pictures…

I have a large female,she’s been in hiding for a while now,she’s an adult,but I think she’s going into hibernation,as her species hibernate in the winter. I did find a male and tried to pair her,but she wasn’t having any of it,another sign she was already bred.

Gosh I miss my snapping turtle minky so much, I had her for years she was my baby and when she got larger I made an outside enclosure for her. Ironically one night that a neighbor who had been complaining about one of our small trees, a branch off of her massive tree which took up literally half of the neighborhood fell into our backyard and destroyed her enclosure. She was nowhere to be found but we lived close to a Greenway with a creek so I'm just thinking she's living out her best life down there.

Removed all of her substrate, I looked everywhere, I even walked through the house just in case. Low and behold jumped out of the dirt that I was trying to find her, I rehomed her for about twenty minutes. I messed up all her hard work. I was glad I found her. When I put her back into her original house. The next day I came down and she had rebuilt everything but better. I could see her better too.

Hey, you don’t have to worry about how you sound and look it is the content that is important! I have very little confidence as I lost my right leg I rarely leave the house, I have put on tons of weight since I have been recovering and I am finding it hard to lose because exercise is so hard! My doctor told me to sit in front of a mirror and talk about what I hate, I do this a few times a month and it becomes easier because these things cannot be changed, please try it and stop being so hard on yourself you need to push yourself so your son can see how you overcome difficult situations, do it for him I know I would watch your channel because of my love of tarantulas, so definitely try it and if you could let me know how to find your channel i can honestly tell you that I will sit and watch every video! ❤

For the jumping spider enclosure, is that amount of substrit (hehehe, Richard) enough for that plant? I’d love to start using live plants for some of my spiders, but idk how much they actually need to thrive.
@Heartshackles17 күн бұрын
The planting depth for each plant varies, more substrate would allow the plant to thrive and grow bigger but it'll likely survive in this because it has space to pan out the roots across the entire soil. Not sure if you want any advice, so feel free to skip reading if you don't! There is very many types of plants, so I would just note three things before looking into plants for your spiders. How dry or moist is the environment? How much light would the plant get? Is there any natural light, is a plant light possible? And, depending on what kind of spider you have, is the plant safe for the spider, or a falling hazard for a heavy spider. There is many plants that can exist in dry and quite dark environments and "harsh" conditions, but just bear in mind no plant can exist with 0 light and 0 water ultimately. You could experiment with small baby plants. Keep in mind to ask the place you are acquiring the plants from if they use pesticides! I would quarantine the plants before using them, or wash them thoroughly including the roots to minimize the chance of pests.
