My mom is 89 she had her letter telling her she is not eligible for the winter fuel allowance so I applied for pension credit we were informed she is not eligible for pension credit because she is £6.00 over what they say you are allowed. She has worked from the age of 15 paid in to the system and has never claimed a penny from the state.

Lots in this position. The cut off is too low, as is the personal tax allowance at 12570 which now dilutes the triple lock / any small extra pension you might have. Keeps you poor while everything is going up.

We had our has heating set at 16° yesterday, thermostat was switching it on and off as and when it kicked in and it cost us nearly £5 just for a 3-bed semi, double-click etc. Won't be doing that again I'm afraid! I was threatened with a court appearance and possible jail if I didn't pay my national insurance contributions as a self employed worker plus how ever much I was short it would be deducted from my monthly pension ! I was told NI was to pay for pension and health care !

Well, it has to be said that if £200 (or £300 for a couple) is going to push people into poverty, then all I can say is that the State pension is not high enough in the first place. Why not give a decent pension and forget all the add-on supplements, such as the Christmas bonus of £10 one off payment. That is worth nothing nowadays.

Tje winter fuel problem could quite easily have been achieved in another way. The big complaint was that it was a universal payment, regardless of wealth, so one way they could have achieved it would have been not paying it to people on higher tax bands, who probably don't need it. Once again, not thinking things through enough.

Regarding those on 40 % tax bracket. That’s what Martin Lewis suggested. It Would make a lot more sense and protect the vulnerable. Some pensioners have illnesses and have to have heating on all day in winter and don’t go out much. Mine comes up as £15 a day on my smart metre if I do that. Completely unaffordable. I’m a pensioner not eligible for pension credit by the way.
