"I should take a gap year" --me watching this at my full time job 3 years after graduating college seriously though I wish I had explored that option more but growing up in a poor rural area it didn't seem feasible and I had no idea there were scholarships available

You can still take a gap year from work :) you’d need to find a new job or at least talk to your boss :(

Yeah it definitely is not an option for most working class students. Maybe that will change with the internet being more readily available. But it's still highly dependent on your parents being in well paid jobs. Because the majority of gap year students fund their year out via mum/dad or at least have a good chunk of parental financial contribution. Even if it's just your folks letting you stay at home rent free as opposed to actual landlords who require your right kidney as a deposit.

I totally get you on feeling older in college! I started college when I was 20, and I wil be graduating next year when I am 25. Even though a lot of the students are younger than me, we still get along. They don't care how much older I am. If anything they commend older students for coming back. I guess it also helps I still look like I'm 18 LOL! So no worries B! You are gonna do great in Uni! ✨🍂💛

Don't worry about being "older" in college. I also took 2 gap years after high school since I extended my au pair year and ended up staying in Chicago for 22 months instead of 13. I started studying when I was 20 and I'm graduating this year. Some people are younger, some are older and honestly you can't even tell bc we're all at the same point in life and connect over our college experience! :)

About feeling "old" in college, I get you. I started college near my 21st birthday, but before I decided to take a few months off (or something like that) because I was very stressed and burned out of preparing a lot for three years to apply to a state university and not enter any of the times I was also experiencing an "age crisis" where I compared myself to my other high school classmates, most of whom were probably already in college, about to graduate or working. I can say that this break helped me because I was able to reflect on what I really wanted academically speaking, and to look for other private universities (and there was no reason to worry about starting college in my twenties because my classmates were different ages hehe)
@ValentinaSanchez-hm7zi

hey, don't worry about the age! As in Spain college is so much cheaper, a lot of students change major, around two/one year in, so there are going to be a lot of people your age :)

Hi, I'm 33 years old and I'm telling you my age to give an advice. Don't worry too much about going to college right after high school. Because even if you know what you want as a career, as you get older, you will be able to figure out what you really want and then make a decision. Just do exactly what you are doing now... Keep going and everything is going to work out. Don't compare yourself if anybody! You're are awesome! I love your channel! 🥰😍😘 ps. Sorry my English... Second language 😆🙇‍♀️

Don't worry about the age difference. Someone's age is not all they are. It's about where they are in life. I'm currently part of a class full of students of different ages. raging from 17 to 25 and I love it. You learn from each other in a different way because we all are in a different stage of our lives and I think that is something really beautiful.

Whilst I do slightly regret taking a 2nd one this covid season (1 was probably enough aha), I've accepted my choice to experiment more and I really believe that everyone works at their own pace. Oh, in Sweden gap years are more of the norm than th exception. I didn't start a univeristy education until I was 23 years old, simply because I did not know what I wnated to study or if I wanted to study. When I later came to FRance on an exchange and met 19 years olds who were aready doing there master I was like "are you old enough to be here????"

Thank you, Beatrice. This video and the people’s comments really made me much more comfortable about taking a gap year. I am freezing my school for second semester and even now i cannot believe i’m saying this but i am studying for university entrance exam one more time. And hopefully next year i will be a freshman in all-ways since i am/was in english prep school which i have finished in success in the first semester. I would like to say that for second semester most of my classmates are going in their own departments and few are staying in prep school for advanced english guess i am the only person who is not doing either of them. But i have different plans and now i feel more relax and happy with the choice i’ve made :)) 💗

I'm in the same boat as u! I'm taking a gap year since I graduated in June. I feel I wasted 2020 in a way but I can't blame myself for that because it was a virus and my mental health was so bad. I was babysitting and exploring childcare careers last year but now I feel I want to definitely do a creative career in art and design, so I'm trying to focus of that.... and later on my portfolio and hopefully I'll find the right school to apply to for a course in. Were all learning and it's hard but we gotta keep going :)!

This is the video that I needed right now! I decided to take a COVID gap year at the end of 2020 because I was struggling in online school and my mental health was getting worse as each semester went by. I don't think I would have done a gap year if I was still doing school in-person but I'm realizing now that this is something that I need to do. It hasn't been easy but I'm trying to go with the flow and let myself truly relax. And also reminding myself that everyone is in a different stage in life and I shouldn't compare myself to them

It was so needed with a year like that, and now that I at med school, I would really recommend everyone to take a gap year before further studies!

You’re not behind! You’re doing great! Don’t worry about the age thing.... university isn’t like school, age isn’t as relevant. There will be people of all different ages, and you will just make friends with people based on personality... it’s not even an issue. Life isn’t a race, I think what you have chosen to do is very sensible... 2 years is nothing compared to your life span.

Don't be too worried about starting college later. 1) A few gens ago, most people didn't even get through high school because it was expected that you would be working at home in family trade businesses like mechanics, electricians, and a whole lot of farming. The 70s and 80s changed a lot and the 80s reallly put the push on college with the rise of tech and computers. Otherwise? It was for rich city people. 2) Now, there's a push BACK towards qualified trade schools because we have a lot of academia push here... BUT most of those jobs don't have practical immediate application, and they can be outsourced easily. So what's suffering? Physical forensics, like doing the labs. Welders, ship dock workers, well-qualified people in construction. They get paid way more than you might think. My friend *starts* unqualified "helpers" at $20/hr. He usually keeps people until they quit, make major untrainable mistakes, or retire. Plumbers can never be outsourced and while there's a million out there, really good ones stand out and you can basically set your own prices at that point. But if you're going into academia? Eh, still, plenty of places to do that! Be on the lookout for where you might fit, or be aware that you might need to make your own field or relocate. I know people in marine biology. We're a very cheap state for that in college! We also have... no jobs! But Canada wants us. So does Japan, but Japan has some big drawbacks like if you don't already have a background in Japanese, it's harder, or if you aren't used to earthquakes... Things like this. We're one of the cheapest states to get that forensic lab education, but we also pay the least of most States. Plan to educate here and move elsewhere. Or in my case, I'm super-interested in one or two specific topics... so write about it. You already have a youtube channel! Talk about what you find out you love! 3) So what if you're older? I got accepted when I was 17. My family is crazy and doesn't like girls in college. My mom changed her mind and is now getting HER degree in her 50s, now that she's free of a crap relationship. Like I'm gonna be all "No, no, you're too old to start... have you considered, you might not have things to talk about?? Like you're from a different planet? What do you know about foods or bands on the radio or anything that might be in common with other humans??" lol. I started at... uh, 26, I think, while working full time and then some. I was so angry that it was a decade later than I wanted. But at least I was there, getting a chance to start at all. And it was so weird, I met so many people not THAT much younger than me but I kept hearing the same complaints when it came to things like studying, group projects, etc. These people had never learned to keep an agenda? Hated that their parents wouldn't treat them like adults, but after asking questions, they didn't pay bills, wash their laundry, know how to vacuum, and didn't do dishes?? ... You know what, I can help you fix your life. I'm not on your level but that might be a *good thing* here. I can do a different kind of tutoring for $10/hr. You might find your own stride. I've done the online classes and my grades plummeted because the courses are broken, we pay FULL tuition, and I have to nag teachers to fix grades on *every* *single* *quiz* online. lol nope. Great, so my scholarships ride on my GPA, which is tanked because the courses are broken. Awesome. I have screenshots to prove it, too. RIGHT ANSWER: No WRONG ANSWER: No. That sort of thing. The whole. Semester. You didn't miss anything but panic attacks, hives, and nervous breakdowns after frustrated calls and worse emails. I promise.

OMG Beatrice I had such a surprise watching this video!! I had almost the exact same decision to make as you, whether or not to move to Segovia (the town where IE is) this September!!! I'm not a uni student but I was offered a job here (I'm from the UK) and I had to decide whether it would be worth it or whether I should just stay with my family and work remotely. Overall, I'm glad I came, but I think you made the right decision; there's been no further lockdown in Spain but it has been far from normal life here. For one thing, I've not been able to leave the town to visit anywhere else in Spain, like Madrid, which is so close! Also, most things have been closed or cancelled this year, like shops, restaurants, parades, festivals and markets. There's also a curfew here of 8pm, so even if you wanted to do something at night you couldn't! I have nice flatmates and I like my job so I'm still enjoying myself but it is definitely not a normal year in Spain. I think the IE uni students have had the worst of it too because they have been lots of Covid cases among them so they keep having to quarantine, and of course now the curfew means they're stuck indoors. If you have any other questions about Segovia please ask!!! I hope this has given you some more peace of mind

Hi Beatrice, I hope your gap year is going well. Hopefully you can do some more travel like Spain and Europe if Covid-19 is cured or the vaccinations work out. The hustle of online learning leaves...much to be desired. Lol

You could come to Germany when travelling is allowed again! It’s such a beautiful country (besides from Bavaria!!) 🥰. And especially in Berlin like almost everyone speaks English, so communication wouldnt be a problem (but learning some German would be still good tho)☺️. Tell me if you think that this could be an idea for you :).

Here in Switzerland it's veryyyyyy unusual to take a gap year. Some students just make an exchange year but they are still going to school. I never took a gap year or did an exchange year 🤷🏼‍♀️ In Switzerland it's just go, go, go! 😅 Sometimes this kinda sucks..

I love this!! I am 34 and have had 2 gap phases in my life. I think a gap period can be good or bad depending on what you do with it. For me, my first gap period was after grad school before getting a full-time job. While I did a few things I am happy I did (playing in a band, some fun times with friends), most of it was spent playing games and procrastinating the things I really wanted to do. But my second gap period is right now. And I am living it to the fullest! First off, I'm spending time helping my wife, who has been struggling with serious mental illnesses. As well as helping some other family members through struggles. Second, I've had more time to focus on my own mental health, and have started meditating and journaling regularly. And finally, I started a blog, a KZbin channel, and will soon be launching a podcast!

I regretted taking a gap semester because I am still unemployed for 3 months and I applied to many jobs already but right now managers are limiting their employees since the pandemic.
