The moment of truth! Great way to end the year and to start the new year. Usually, for me, great astronomical events come with great increase in cloud cover. I'm glad your clouds parted a bit for you to at least see it and capture it. = Patrick -

First time viewer, but looooooong time astronomy enthusiast. 40 years of my life have been devoted to learning everything about astronomy, minus the math. This channel is a breath of fresh air. 5:30 Galileo himself would be like, "What, seriously? I wanna see." Also Galileo: "What the- how did I get here? And since when did I speak this strange language?"

Not sure where you are based, but generally don't be afraid of secondhand Astro gear, it's normally well kept. Look out for mould and scratches on lenses or mirror, dinked tubes (or other signs it may have been dropped) but outside that you can't go far wrong. Stay clear of cheap scopes described as a "Bird-Jones design", the scope should be around as long as it's focal length. A Dobsonian based Newtonian reflector will be the generally recommended scope for visual Astonomy. Astrophotography is a different kettle of fish, not bad to get into with a small tracker if you already have a DSLR with an O.K prime lens, but if not it can get expensive fast

Good image! How many frames did you take?

Well done Kwasi ! Very cool! I was wondering what software you used to learn in advance, the transit details? You mentioned Stellarium, which I think might be good for scanning a night or two ahead, but how do you know weeks in advance when there might be a Jovian transit or two capable of being seen at your location and local time? Domo arigato gozaimasu!

Much appreciated Paul-san! When it comes to transit events, I usually rely on online articles from places such as the websites for Astronomy magazine and Sky & Telescope magazine. Some posters on the Cloudy Nights forums also share some good info. Then I check in Stellarium to see if the event is viewable from my location.
