Really appreciated the mini series on the shotgun. In jurisdictions where it is difficult to own an AR 15 or other modern sporting rifles, pump shotguns may be easier to own for the average civilian. Would love to see some pointers on how to move inside house etc with shotgun should it not be possible to stay in a safe room where police can be called from. The attraction of the shotgun for home defense is the superior payload it offers when compared to a handgun. If one is able to shoot from behind cover even a single shot shotgun will be useful.

@Jay C I do the exact same. At a range from the middle of my bedroom to the landing or the bedroom door down the stairs, birdshot will dig a hole in someone. But if they don't stop what they are doing, I will pump it and pull the trigger again. They will surely have a rethink on life then.

This is a really good demonstration about proper ammo selection... I run the 8 pellet Hornady TAP 00 buck when I am on duty, don't have a single complaint about it.

@@ASPextra Mhmm. The TAP patterns better out of my gun than the FLITE CONTROL does, but I can't really say anything bad about either of those loads. One thing I do also agree with Matt as well is the shotgun stock plays a huge role. I'm transitioning to a pistol grip w/ collapsible stock for an adjustable length of pull. Pistol grip stocks don't give the best cheekweld, but you get a lot better leverage over the gun. This is important for us in the line of duty, since we have to do things like clearing rooms.

Mossberg 500, if you zoom in on the gun you can see the tang mounted safety instead of the Maverick's cross bolt safety. The Maverick 88 is still a good gun, and is nearly identical to the Mossberg 500.

I love federal's flight control ammo and Hornady steel match rounds even with a short barrel and no choke on it , you'll get awesome patterns ...

Interesting, I wonder what kind of shot Charles Askins and the boder patrol used on the Rio Grande when fighting bandits. I read that he favored the shotgun over the rifle for the margin of error- shot spread in the dark in a high speed situation. I guess he would have kept the shot in the B zone or maybe even gone to the C zone, 2 bandits per shot?

John, at 3:04 in the video, Matt says he's loading it with 8 pellets of 00 FCC, but then in at 4:42 and later for the rest of the video he refers to the patterning as 9 pellets of 00 FCC; did he switch from 8 pellet to 9 pellet in the middle or was he talking about and shooting the same one the entire time? Sorry, just curious. Thanks for posting these clips!!

Yes he went to 9 pellet because that particular gun loves it.

We changed from 8-pellet to 9-pellet. What he is saying is correct.

Originally flight control had the standard 9 pellets but they switched to 8 because they found it patterned better. You can find both but I believe only 8 pellet is currently being produced.

@@mustangkrillin Thanks, both 8 and 9 pellet versions are being produced but current availability is spotty. The 12 gauge 2-3/4" #1 buckshot FCC 15 pellet has sadly been discontinued and is out of stock everywhere.

I do private lessons any time at C2 in Scottsdale. I can recommend some other group classes as well, but not sure who is teaching shotgun.

The instructor may have made a false claim to pattern vs velocity. It has nothing to do with deformation, the shotcup prevents that. It's because a higher velocity projectile will have traveled a greater distance and will have deviated greater in the same amount of time. So same range but greater, measurable distance between projectiles.

No, most stocks on shotguns from the factory are too long.

@@ASPextra Exactly. My point is that the typical shotgun stock has a 13.5"-14" LOP, which is about an inch too long for most folks. Until Magpul came out with their excellent SGA stocks, the best most folks could do was a factory 'youth' stock or something like a Hogue super-short stock, or cutting down a wood stock to desired length and installing a new pad.
