I am most certain an attacker won't shrug off 27 #4 Buck pellets at close range because the pellets only penetrated 10 inches deep. plus #4 buckshot is better for people who live in houses with extremely thin walls. Like I do. I will take the bare minimum of penetration on a fleshy Target in exchange that the pellets won't exit the bad guy and go through 10 walls. Garandthumb tested many bullets through drywall, and 00 Buck went through all 8 test walls. I would assume #4 buck goes to the less, purely because the pellets are smaller and lighter.

Federal loads some copper plated No.4 buck (PD256) which I like a lot. Kicks a noticeable amount harder than most any 00 buck though, and I wouldn't recommend it to someone new to shotguns. Me, I love it especially since I live in an apartment with neighbors on either side of me. The whole point of ballistics gel is to show bullet expansion and deformation. Groceries do simulate better. Actual flesh/meat and bone shows a much better and much more realistic test to human flesh/meat and bone. I guess though that ballistic gel makes your tests cooler and more tacticool so OBVIOUSLY it MUST be more legit!! 🙄🙄

You're not understanding the point of ballistic gel. Calibrated gel is a repeatable medium for testing. Throughout 40 years, penetration standards of 12-18 inches has been determined to be reliable for an incapacitating shot. Layers of demin are used with hollow point rounds to test its ability to not get clogged and still expand. Gel also like you said, captures the bullet for examining the deformation. Meat targets are more variable, and is at best, a speculation of what may happen. Meanwhile results from ballistic gel is much more accurate and repeatable.

I agree! Everyone in my house, including my wife and daughter, can very proficiently run our 20 guage shotgun. After testing I find even I can get more shots on target, more accurately and faster with the 20 guage. Not much lead is lost over the 12 guage if you find the right shells either. I personally reload myself and have lots of long tested loads for 20 guage. My favorite factory shell is the federal premium 3" #1 buck shell. I always advocate for the use of the 20 guage now. I know my wife and daughter CAN shoot 12 guage, but they don't like to. Give them the 20 guage and they both turn into Annie Oakley 😆 Its comforting to know that either one could absolutely protect our home and themselves without me around... and with a very suitable firearm.

Great video guys. Only one question though. You both state the 3” load doesn’t offer any real benefits over the 2.75” loads, however, for only adding .25” in shell length, you get almost DOUBLE the payload. Yeah, it’s louder and recoils a bit more, however, delivering nearly double the payload is pretty impressive. 15 00 buck pellets versus 8 seems like a major benefit to me. Aside from perhaps reducing capacity by 1 round in the mag tube, the increased recoil and noise, it would seem that the 3” delivers far better stopping power. Am I missing something here? Thanks in advance.

I am not sure this is a good test for shotguns. As you said, "shotguns move stuff around"...and they do. However then you said there wasnt enough penetration on your first shot. Well if i take a baseball bat to ballistic gel, there is no penetration, however that bat is deadly becaise it moves things around too. The overall shock of shotgun and the multiple pellets is part of it lethal force and not only penetration. Also if i shoot anywhere i am liable/accountable for every projectile i send out the barrel. That is part of shotguns strength because depending on the pellets, i wont penetrate walls like a .223 or powerful pistols or full metal jacketed ammo. If i am in an apartment, a suburb, in the country my desire to penetrate walls will be different
@ASPextra
@ASPextra 2 жыл бұрын
I disagree that your desire to penetrate walls will be different. You don't want to penetrate walls. How you accomplish that is significant, though.
@francostacy7675
@francostacy7675 2 жыл бұрын
@@ASPextra so the #4 buckshot wont go through walls like others but is deadly inside a home or room or close quarters even though your gel test indicates not so much. I saw those gel blocks jump off the table and that force matters too in stopping power so the depth of the pellets in the gel is not the only consideration for its ability to be lethal and thats why i dont think the gel test is as accurate for buckshot or birdshot like it is for slugs, handguns and rifles
@ASPextra
@ASPextra 2 жыл бұрын
But the depth of penetration in gel is a prerequisite. It just is.
@francostacy7675
@francostacy7675 2 жыл бұрын
@@ASPextra it just is.....doesnt sound very logical or convincing. Its not a law of nature or physics. A baseball bat has zero penetration but it kills. A burn to the body that covers most of the skin has little penetration but it kills. You get hit by a train and no penetration and your dead anyway. The fact that your Buckshot had little penetration but moved the entire blocks around is also a factor. A 22 or 38 at that distance may have had more penetration but not the force The body has to absorb that Force regardless of the penetration. If 22-caliber projectile inter's only 2 in of your body and it's not your skull or your neck you will more than likely not die and keep moving. However if you were hit with 500 projectiles all at the same time with none of them being fatal more than likely you will die so the gelatin does not tell all of the story because if it did a baseball bat or train or Surface Burns would not be lethal

@@ASPextra I find it interesting that the 3" magnum 00 (and other shot sizes) give you almost double payload count but do it at a pretty extreme velocity loss and penetration potential with a recoil factor enhancement. I also know that you really don't need a 3" shell to get fairly hefty payloads inside a 12ga. load. 3" and even 3 1/2" may be more about marketing and perception than it is about actual performance.

I appreciate the testing but disagree a little on the #4. Let’s be honest in a home defense situation odds are you are under 40 feet so it’s not like the velocity is going to drop off much from your test. Second even if you hit a big guy in the shoulder/side with 30+ .22 size pellets that’s going to do massive damage and that arm is mangled. Yes #1 or 00 will penetrate more but in a home defense situation over penetration is not a good thing. Just my opinion and still love the video.

The extra recoil is pretty much a mute subject unless the person is of slight build and can't control the gun. If you are shooting at someone you will never feel the recoil. Range practice is another story though. The dichotomy of sound between the two loads could make a difference inside closed quarters.
@nelsonr1467
@nelsonr1467 4 жыл бұрын
That's great, but those high recoil loads are intended for hunting not self defence.

And......you still don't feel the recoil which was my point. I understand you are implying that you have to recover and get back on target. I don't think that will bother you that much either unless you are very slight of build. If the person is close, the gun will still be on them or very close to them. If they are further away you will be able to get back on target. I guess you don't hunt much.

I'd be tempted to use 3" mag shells except for the fact that I may be shooting from a kneeling defensive position. While I can recover quickly with my feet firmly planted on the ground, I'm concerned I might get knocked back a bit from a kneeling position since I'm a bit less heavy set than Matt.

It concerned me the Federal Flight Control here fails the FBI protocol due to over-penetration. I take the point that those uncalibrated blocks shot at inconsistent distances under uncontrolled environmental factors don’t represent their performance vis-a-vis a scientific, controlled test and are just for entertainment. Did anyone catch whether they’re charged to 1300-something or 1100-something fps?

It is true that there are some really heavy-set dudes out there. Another factor, however, is an arm impeding the path of the bullet. Most of the time an attacker will move their arms away from the sides of their body and instead position one or both of them in front of their body. Such as when they are approaching you wielding a knife or bat in their hand(s), taking aim at you with a firearm, or if a strong guy is advancing with the intent of strangling you. Because of this a projectile may have to pass through that arm prior to entering the body. Remember Kyle Rittenhouse shooting that one guy in the arm. Kyle was fortunate that the bullet did enough damage to that arm to render it useless. Because the bullet failed to enter his chest at all.

@JohnLloydScharf
@JohnLloydScharf 3 жыл бұрын
No. You need to look at what a shotgun does with even birdshot. At 21 feet it will put a hole in the chest of a man the size of a tennis ball with birdshot. I am surprised they go more than three inches, but the hole punched by over 2000 foot pounds of birdshot means they are not getting up. 00 Buck will go right through your wall to kill your neighbor through his wall across the street.
