For the history, or "footprint" that you want, you need to put together a family tree, and link it to your DNA results. Ancestry can't do it for you entirely. But if you start building the tree with Yourself, then your two Parents, then your four Grandparents, then your eight Great-grandparents, etc. at some point one of those people will already be in the Ancestry database, and Ancestry can take it from there. If you're lucky, you won't need to go any farther than your Parents or Grandparents before Ancestry recognizes them and starts helping you out.

That is if someone has started a tree with some of the same people in it. At least when I started my tree it wasn't that easy. But more latinos have started testing and making trees so it may have changed. But for me I had to do a lot of the tree making after finding out stuff from my mom and grandma and the records.

Hey bro, you need to take a test that will help you to find out your HAPLOGROUP!!! This will tell you exactly what you want to know in regards to where your mom originated from (Africa, Euro, or Taino) and the same for your dad. For instance, Halpogroup X2a, I believe is indigenous American (i.e. Native American). This is a MITOCHONDRIAL haplogroup meaning its coming from your mom, her mom, and all the way back to their original mother. So, if your mom's haplogroup is X2a this means the first woman who started your female line was Native American. The same holds true for your pops. His would be called Y-dna, meaning you would be able to see if the first male starting your father's line was African, Native, or Euro based on his Haplogroup (haplo-type). 23andme will provide you this result when you test with them. Its important that YOU test with them, however, and not a female because you will not be able to get your father's haplogroup from a female since they carry two X chromosomes and so would not usable for establishing one's paternal haplogroup. But since you carry X and Y you can see both mom and dad's. Hope this helps.

The haplogroups just tell you about one of ancestry...your mother's mother's mother's mother's mother's... It may ignore most of your ancestry. There was a woman who was 95% European and 5% African. She had an African mitochondrial haplogroup because the African came from her mother's mothers mother's mother's.... Also, haplogroups change over time. There is a Native American haplogroup that came from an Asian haplogroup that was originally an African haplogroup.

Take this from a 68 year old Boricua who's majored in history. Your specific dna are footprints of historical human migrations. Your indigenous a ancestors migrated to the island where they mixed with other Amerindians from Central and South America. Over hundreds of years they developed what today is known as Taino culture. 500 years ago Europeans working for the King and queen of Spain invaded the island a d made it a territory, these men came without families mostly and began to procreate with the surviving Taino women, This created a mestizo population that later began to mix with Sub Saharan Africans who were victims of slavery. We are mostly the great grand children of European men who married, or suduced and even raped Black and Indigenous women. Later in a effort to increase Whiteness on the island, a degree was made by the Spanish crown which gave free land in the 1800s to any European who came from a Catholic country. Thousands of families then came from Spain, Portugal, Ireland, Corsica, Germany, France seeking economic opportunities. As a result the average person in Puerto Rico has a dominance of European dna because Taino and Africans were slowly being absorbed by ever increasing numbers of European immigration to the island well into 1898 when the US invades the island and the island population began to migrate to the US mainland. Whatever you find in your dna is from your direct a ancestors. We are the offspring of the colonized a d the colonizers, we are Taino, mixed with all those groups who came to our home and took over. We have a violent history of erasure and assimilation. Good luck on your journey of self discovery and healing.

Ah, you might like to try CRI Genetics Advanced Ancestry Analysis in addition to their standard test as then you'll not only get their guesstimations of your recent ancestry of about 5 generations back, but you'll also get their guesstimations regarding your extended ancestry for as far back as they can trace, plus on those distant ones that they're reasonably sure are fairly decent, statistically accurate guesstimates, they'll tell you how many generations back each ethnic member entered your family tree (& give you an approximate year, using 25yr intervals). They also offer limited mt-DNA & Y-DNA testing & analysis (FYI: FamilyTreeDNA offers a more complete analysis of these two types of tests). mt-DNA results will show your maternal line for thousands of years (but due to its rate of change it doesn't go as far back as Y-DNA can). Y-DNA results will track your paternal line for about 200,000-to-300,000 years back. Note: Celebrity matches made via mt-DNA & Y-DNA testing generally show very-distant cousins (both living & dead), unless you hit the jackpot & get a celeb-match or more in direct line with your paternal line (which would be a rare occurance, but not impossible). Basically they trace you & a celebrity to an unknown individual found in a dig who was DNA tested & found to have a relevant haplogroup to both you & the celeb (& the ancient unknown guy apparently had at least two sons: one which is on the celeb's direct paternal line, & the other being on your paternal line - unless you hit that jackpot & you're all on one line with no second son being involved). DNA tests can't give you family trees: those you or a geneaologist must make on your own.* * = Not all relationship hints given by testing companies for your DNA matches are relevant & accurate; &, not everyone's family trees are made accurately (& many records are inaccurate &/or use variant spellings of names). Geneaological research can be difficult, disappointing, & frustrating at times. DNA test results can give clues as to where to look for records.** ** = Not all company results show the same countries, esp on distant results; but, there's often a historical connection between the different countries/areas guesstimated (like the Iberian Peninsula, Italy, Greece & countries nearby, plus North Africa share a lot of migration & settlement histories; so, one testing company's guesstimation might be 1% North Africa while another company guesstimates 4% Greek & Southern Italian instead, & yet another company might guesstimate 11% Spain instead, but the percentages don't really matter much, & some historical context will help tie it all together).

Your DNA results show you what DNA you inherited from your parents, you get a random 50% from each parent, just as any siblings would get a random 50% from each, and not necessarily the same 50%. The ethnicities identified shows that you have ancestors that came from Spain, Portugal, and Africa, along with native Puerto Rico people. You are a blend of all of them, a living history book. In order to find the names, you must build your own tree and trace back each generation with a paper trail (birth certificates, marriage certificates, etc). There are two parts to your heritage, 1, your lineage of great grandparents back through the years, and 2, the DNA you inherited from them, both tell your story. Start your tree with you, your parents, grandparents, and keep moving back a generation. Good luck with your search.

You should test with 23andme and see if your haplogroups say if your maternal and paternal line started with say an Indigenous woman or West African woman. I say that because for most Hispanics the paternal line is of European descent. In my case my maternal line starts with an Indigenous woman from the Yucatán Peninsula and my paternal line it starts with a European male from Europe( most likely a Spaniard). Most conquistadors were male and it was less likely they brought over women with them. So in between these lines there are many other ethnicities that make their way into your blood line. I’m only 7% West African and it’s on both sides of my family so it’s most likely a mix that occurred 400+ years ago and that dna has been reused over and over up to me, if that makes sense. In your case your combined Indigenous/Taino dna is 11% total, it’s because they were decimated early on in Puerto Rico’s colonization period along with your African ancestors, so there has been a higher influx of European dna in your family because of it. The higher European dna could also be of recent European ancestors as well, from places like France, Italy, England and of course Sephardic Jewish dna, which a lot of people miss. Your North African, Egypt, Some Spain percentages show maybe, Canary Islander and Sephardic Jewish dna from Spain and Portugal. Not every percentage of dna you have had to be from the colonial era. My sister’s boyfriend has ancestors from Corsica and he’s of full Puerto Rican descent. It’s an Island off the coast of France if I recall. And that migration probably took place in the late 1800s and early 1900s.

Your question about were your ancestors the ones who were colonizing or the ones who were colonized… the answer is probably both. Since the Puerto Rican admixture at this point is such a wide range with Spanish, West African, Native, etc. and all that was pretty far back in time. Remember, we all have 128 5th great-grandparents. And 256 6th great-grand parents, and so on. A lot of crazy things going on back then. Your admixture definitely tells a story.

@@raimundasmickevicius3279 genealogy and genetics are two separate things. Each DNA company has their own strengths and weaknesses. Each interpret ethnicity differently. Early Spanish Settlers were almost entirely from Castile as Queen Isabella had just conquered the Moors in 1492. Unless you had grandparents in the last 8 generations come Directly from Spain or Portugal your European DNA is going to be an admixture from hundreds of early grandparents. On top of that isolation of villages increases endogamy. In a sense it makes you Puerto Rican not really European, African or Indigenous. The only way to know where your Gene Pool comes from is to follow the combination of genetics and Paper Trail Geneology. The best combination of this is AncestryDNA and Third party genealogy companies like Family Search I have tested with AncestryDNA, 23 & me, and My Family Tree DNA. I have done The Big Ydna and Full Mtdna Tests for deep Paternal and Maternal ancestry. I have 820 people in my family tree. I have 48,000 dna cousins on AncestryDNA alone. Spaniards mixed since the beginning. In the year 1512, just a couple of decades after the Discovery of the New World about 50% of the Spanish settlers were married by the Catholic Church to natives. The Royal Decree of October 19, 1514, is probably the clearest example of the reality of Spanish interracial policies under the Catholic Church and the legal recognition of rights by the Crown of Spain that gave rise to modern Hispano-America. The Royal Decree of October 19, 1514, ordered by King Fernando the Catholic, King of Aragon and Regent of Castille dictates the following: "It is our entire will that the Indians have, as they should, complete freedom to marry whoever they want, both with Indians and with natives of these Kingdoms (Aragon and Castile), or Spaniards born in the Indies and that in this they are not hindered. And we order that no order of ours that had been given to them or by us, can prevent or be a barrier to the marriage between the Indians men or Indians women with Spanish men or women and that all have complete freedom to marry whoever they want, and our Audiences (Tribunals) ensure that this is how it is kept and complied with" (Law 2, title I, Lib.VI). This explains why you are a result of a mix of Spanish and Native American plus, later, Black Africans brought to Puerto Rico. Note that interracial marriages were forbidden in other countries until recently, more than 400 years after Spain made it legal with full rights for their descendants as any other Spaniard from Spain.

These DNA tests seem vague with their ranges but really they can't be sure about how much of your Euuropean might be Spanish, or Portugese or French or Italian, In the same way your African DNA could be from different parts of Africa, there has just been too much moving about, and mostly they define where its from by testing people whose family have lived in the same place for generations, so it's just an estimate. What they are accurate on is continental level differences, and you have three substantial sections of your ancestry from seperate continents. Your true ancestry is all three. Your ancestors were the Spanish colonisers and slavers, the slaves and the natives who were colonised. If your father thinks his family were entirely native, this test indicates he was wrong, but think what your father was talking about was the his paternal line. This test doesn't test that theory, you would need a y DNA test for that, but that only shows that one line and ignores the vast majority of your ancestry. It could be that 10 generations back an Irish man slept with someone else's wife and that line heads off in a very unexpected direction, but that would not suddenly make you Irish. I don't think those tests are worth the money, but they can be done. If you want a family tree, then that's something you can build on Ancestry, and your DNA matches help you do that, and you can go back as far as their are records, you might find that you have lines that arrived in Puerto Rica more recently than you think. Finally your friends don't understand how DNA works. A sibling would have inherited about half of each of your parents, as you have, but a different mix. The mix of DNA from different places would be different to. However traits do not work on percentages of DNA from different places, they are carried on particular genes, and its where those genes comes from that counts. So she could have darker skin than you, yet have less African DNA, it only matters whether the genes that control skin colour originated in ancestors that had darker or lighter skin. The majority of genes don't affect that, and would just mean you had inherited more of those from your African ancestors, while she had inherited more of the genes for dark skin. Its not like mixing paint where the colour depends on the proportions of darker and lighter components.

What your friends told you is inaccurate, you are 60% of European decent and 10% of Taino decent, so you are most likely descendant of the colonizers, but also some of your(ours) ascendants were also Taino, just much less, remember we have 4 grandpas, 8 great grandpas, 16 great great grandpas and so on. Therefore your dad is also incorrect, you like 95% of Puerto Ricans are descendant mostly from colonizers and not colonized. The same analysis goes with slaves. However your siblings DNA can vary, that is correct, but it wont be too significant and it wont necessarily show in their appearance. I have seen results from brother and sibling where the brother is much more darker and also more European than her sis.

A good test to take is African ancestry it will let you know your mother or father line, I notice a lot of Puerto Rican take that test and it come back either letting them know where the beginning of their mother line came from some also do the father line and best part of this test it even go as far as telling them their tribe and only one test need to be take not a group of family members because your test goes toward everyone else in that family who in on that bloodline which this one is specific of where your mom side or dad side came from no changes and it only for that one line or both line, but 23 in me also give halagroup of your whole dna that can tell you also if your bloodline is from Native American, African or European...the only thing is with the group that give you the whole dna they always changing every time compare to African ancestry don't change at all...but to me African Ancestry is expensive also for just one side of the test...so it up to the individual what they want and how much they want to spend on getting those solid information.

You may obtain more answers to what you are hoping to find, if you do a 23andMe DNA genetic test. Since 23andMe will provide you with your paternal and your maternal haplogroup groups ancestor lineage. Paternal Haplogroups - Haplogroup Inheritance Paternal haplogroups are families of Y chromosomes defined by specific sets of shared genetic variants. If you are male, the Paternal Haplogroup Report provides information about your Y-chromosome haplogroup, which we also call a "paternal haplogroup" because it is passed down from fathers to their sons through the generations. Maternal Haplogroups - MtDNA A maternal haplogroup is a family of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) that traces back to a single common ancestor. Your maternal haplogroup assignment is based on your mitochondrial DNA, which you inherited from your mother. The Maternal Haplogroup Report tells you about your maternal-line ancestors, from your mother through her mother and beyond. Both males and females inherit their mitochondrial DNA and, therefore, their haplogroup assignment from their mothers. Haplogroups are defined by specific sets of shared genetic variation. Be sure to check out our “Getting Started with the Haplogroup Reports” for a brief overview of this report and where to find the report within your account.

From videos I’ve seen 23 and me separates percentages by continent but includes all African countries with percentages and labels section African and vice versa European .or ethnic group ? but ancestry doesn’t . It mixes it up. I’ve only taken Vitagene and it’s different than 23 and ancestry . They didn’t even break down the percentages for each country but the test was only $20 eBay so couldn’t complain and provided me with some good health info. Ok sorry for Mumbo jumbo lol.

Ancestry DNA was pretty detailed when it came to breaking down continents by specific countries, regions, and peoples!

Don't sweat the precise terminolgy. Sometimes folk must use incorrect terminology in order for their audience to understand. By saying Taino Indian, the word Indian helps to clue in those unfamiliar with the tribe that this is an indigenous people (an Indian tribe: a Native American tribe) & not a more recent immigrant people or a people of a dufferent contenent (although one might have to explain that they're not a South Asian people). Most - but not all - Indian tribe names, regardless of their varying languages, translate into English as "the people," or "the people of ~," or something along this line (this inspired the writers of the Constitution to begin with "We the People of the United States of America..."). Taino can be translated into English roughly as "The Good Guys" or "The Good People." The Taino of Puerto Rico stemmed from a mainland South American tribe called the Arawak meaning "Cassava Eaters" (suggesting to me that this name was placed upon the tribe by outsiders who observed them, but I could be wrong on this point as it's merely a guess of my own: I have merely glanced over some very limited info relative to the Arawaks: I'm confident that others will know much more about them). P.S.: Don't sweat the percentages. It's good enough that you know the general areas where your ancestry is from (sometimes the guesstimates can become very accurate & easy for the testers to figure, & sometimes it's difficult to pick a particular country let alone a small portion or even a city within a country (just being able to identify the continent was the extent of accuracy early on - now things are improving as respective company databases grow & knowledge is gained). Percentages may change with updates. Sometimes countries will change with updates - or different testing companies will give you different results, especially on distant/trace ancestry results (as each company uses its own ways to guesstimate & they don't all examine the same snips (SNP's) of your DNA (each of your chromosomes is segmented & each segment carries various snips: essentially coded genetic information - some relevant to ancestral ethnicities; & these companies aren't looking at every relevant thing, but rather just select portions; & due to recombination of segments one might not inherit some ancestral DNA, or one might inherit less of it than expected & more of another, or others in lieu of that).* * = Having yourself, your syblings &/or your direct-line relatives test (&/or their syblings test) is helpful because, if no one was the result of some hidden affair or was adopted or is otherwise a half-relative, then you can pool the results & every one of the ethnicities will be your actual ethnic background (even if you didn't inherit some of these ethnicities in your own DNA).

You would be disappointed because it is more for a genealogy research. If you never research your family history, it would make so sense to you. Also the percent you get, it was just an estimate and if you use other site you will get different percentages. People use dna to find biological family and also help break the brick wall in the genealogy research.

I don’t see what I’ve text you went through so I will retype it! First, I wanna say that I did ancestry and I also have a small percentage of being Indigenous Taino Native Puerto Rican. To answer your question: Going back to your greats grandparents because your an Indigenous Taino Puerto Rican you have somewhere back a Puerto Rican grandparents, black grandparents and Taino Native Indian you just have to research which generations. Also, the Taino were the first to discover Christopher Columbus so they say and the Taino Indians were being intimate with the African and Spanish having kids so that’s were the Indigenous Taino Native Puerto Rican came about. Another thing through ancestry you will only get your DNA either from your mom or dad and going back from whichever greats of the grandparents their DNA falls upon you. If you have siblings not all the kids results are going to be the same that’s because some may get from mom while others may get their DNA from dad and the greats of the grandparents going back. Lastly, that’s why in your results you mentioned you have a small percentage of African or Nigerian in your DNA so someone great of the grandparents going back in generations was African grandparents of yours. You can also Google the Taino tribes and history of it! One last thing all the different DNA countries on your ancestry results all your ethnicity you are mixed with from your ancestors that happen to fall upon you! Ancestry tells you this!! So,take it as a blessing!!

I don't think your friends have a clear idea on what ancestry means. For one thing while it is theoretically possible for fraternal siblings to share zero to almost 100% of their DNA, the extremes are in practice never found. On average fraternal siblings with both parents in common will share about 50% of their DNA (slightly lower or higher depending on whether they are the same gender). It is possible that some major sections of your family tree are not represented - DNA is inherited in sections (chromosomes), and with only 23 chromosomes from each parent and a 50% chance of inheriting a particular chromosome, you rapidly get to a point where you may inherit no DNA from some branches - you have only about 46 ancestors represented in your DNA (occasionally Grandpa and Grandma's DNA can get on the same chromosome passed on by your parent but it isn't supposed to), but in only 6 generations you'll have 64 ancestors - 18 of them may pass on no DNA at all. How to interpret you mixture will depend on your family history. 2% Taino could mean that six generations ago you had at least one pure Taino ancestor, but given Puerto Rican history it's more likely all 64 six generations ago had varying levels of Taino ancestry, so that even if some branches didn't pass some on others would. (And the analysis is complicated by varying levels of "distinct" DNA in different chromosomes - most DNA on most chromosomes is not unique to a specific lineage). True ancestry though is purely a conceit, a pretension. They are all your ancestors, no branch is more real than any other except in your mind.

This is what happens when you have mixed ancestry. You really can't say who you are if your mixture is from different continents and of different races, which your own does seem to be. If you are 90% European and mostly Italian like myself with the other ten percent from Turkey and Iran, it's much easier to know what to call yourself. While part of Turkey and all of Iran are technically in Asia, the people are not oriental. They are also caucasian so I am not mixed race.

Let me explain to you how all of that works... First of all, this test shows you your DNA, not the "dominant genes" it shows you what ancestries you inherited from your parents, and obviously, if your hypothetical sister has more African features it probably means that from the DNA of your parents she inherited more African than you, because, remember, you only have 50% of the DNA of your parents, the other 50% could be a lot of other things you don't have. Second, if you're something % European it means that some your ancestors, from all the way back, were for a fact Europeans and that's the same for the Tainos and Africans and that's the cool part, because you're mixed your ancestors got colonized and enslaved by your ancestors, isn't that funny? Also your DNA is a unique mix of your parents and all of your other ancestors and, unless you have a twin brother, it's not going to be the same mix, hope it helps! 😁👍

Let's say you go back 15 generations (probably around the 1600's) you would have had more than 32,000 living ancestors (13x Great Grandparents)..... some would be Spanish, some Indigenous, some African, very roughly in the percentages on your DNA test. You don't have one set of "true" ancestors. By the way, I think discovering your DNA matches ("cousins") is one of the more exciting parts of the Ancestry experience.

It's real simple bro. You never said what your total European dna is but going off your phenotype I would guess that your European dna is greater than 60%, and probably greater than 70%..... The percentage of your European dna does not suggest you are more European than Indigenous, or African, the percentage of European dna (your number) absolutely tells you that you're more European than African or Indigenous.... To clarify the spanish colonial period, ALL Latin countries are made up of three colonial bloods... Every country the spanish raped, and pillaged were populated with African slaves. Puerto Rico, Cuba, and D.R. did not begin with huge Native populations so the African phenotype is more visible in the people of these 3 Islands while in countries like Mexico the Indigenous populations were massive, and even after millions of Mexican Natives died from small pox, the remaining numbers of Native Mexicans was substantial. Because of this substantial Native population, the African phenotype was absorbed into the colonial population, and currently there are only 1 4 million Mexicans who live in Mex. that still carry the African phynotype... My dna numbers are 54% Native, 30% European, 11% SS African, 2%N.African, 1% middle eastern, and 2% unassigned... BTW, I am Mexican American.. Most Mexicans are at least half Native, or should I say all Mos, if not all Mexicans who are able to trace their roots into the colonial period are made up of Native, African, and European dna... After the colonial up until current day Mexico, a lot of Europeans have moved to Mexico, and until they mix with colonial blooded Mexicans, they are very white/European looking, and they stand out like sore thumbs... Again, you never told us what your European, and Native dna percentages are...

Without a family tree (genealogy), you can't know, when/how your ancestors met/married/had children. Where the african ancestors still slaves - or were they freed long ago and had land of their own? Were the spanish ancestors plantation owners, sailors, servants or teachers? Digging into the past - DNA and/or genealogy - can give surprising results. Sometimes things are revealed, you don't like. It changes the narrative of the family in the past, - but it can never change who you are ❤️ I hope, records are intact in Puerto Rico - and you will find the answers, you're searching for 🤗 If you're lucky, someone else in your family tree has done genealogical research, and you can get a head start 👍🏻

There are records that your cousins have of your grand parents. They upload them where you can view them. Spaniards kept records of ships passengers and their occupations. Just because I have dominant European DNA doesn’t necessarily mean that I have dominant European ancestry. But not only that, I don’t see Puerto Ricans as just being one thing. I see Puerto Ricans as being a mix of European, African, and Taíno. That’s why Puerto Ricans can vary so widely in physical appearance, based on the percentages of their particular mix. But I’m not convinced that the percentages matter when it comes to “claiming” Puerto Rican anyway. I think it’s more important to acknowledge and embrace all aspects of your ancestry so that you can better understand who you are and where you come from. That was the whole point of me taking the DNA test in the first place. So with all that said, I don’t “claim” Puerto Rican, I am Puerto Rican. Thanks for watching the video!
