Thats actually not the original reason. A cost was set a cent or 2 below full dollar to force employees to open their cash register for change. This was done so that money could not be pocketed by cashiers, or favors done for buyers (giving away free stuff to a friend etc). Its an IRS thing so everyone pays taxes on everything. But another reason why you sometimes see the leave a penny take a penny jar, so advantages can be taken

Maybe not 200k. A lot of places have inflated markets. Like California a 250k house in south Texas is equal to a about a 600-650k house in California.
