I Toured All White Polygamist Towns On The Utah / Arizona Border - The Statistics Are Shocking

I visited Hildale, Utah & Colorado City, Arizona. Both towns were founded by polygamists. I also visited Centennial Park, Arizona, which is currently fully populated by polygamists.

Year before last we stayed at a hotel in Hildale. The lady checking us in was a sweetheart. She was raised in polygamy and was married with 2 sister wives. She shared so much information about it all including telling me she thought it was a cult and if she had it to do over she would not live polygamy.

My husband grew up in Fredonia, 35 miles away from Hildale and Colorado City. He talks about some of the boys that were sent away from Colorado City to live with relatives in Fredonia, and a couple of them just disappeared, never to be heard from again. I'm so glad Jeffs was convicted and stopped, and that the towns are opening up. They were such a closed society for so many years, it was very uncomfortable to visit there.

Why aren't they prosecuted for welfare fraud? They know who the fathers of the children are. Tax payers shouldn't have to pay child support (and food stamps) when the fathers are employed, own property, etc. Like with Al Capone-follow the money and put them in prison for fraud, tax evasion. All of them, including the women who sign their names on welfare request documents. They deserve to be in prison for what they put children through.

I'm curious as to what they do for a living? Since the average annual income per person is so low and yet the the average household income being much higher, it makes me wonder if they mostly collect welfare and then pull their money together to buy their homes? This seems to be the case in many large private "religious" communities except the Amish and meninites who work extremely hard to earn a living, but what exactly do these people do for work? Edit; I just googled and read that because the women are legally considered "single mothers" they do receive government assistance and food stamps, and Warren Jeffs brother and others were investigated for welfare fraud and laundering millions of dollars in food stamps.

Very few of the people in that area would willingly participate in the census or give information to pollsters, polygamy or not. The average age is likely skewed as the younger age persons headcount comes from school district - and the adult headcount is low because they don’t participate. But Mormons do have large families so the average age is likely younger than most places - but it’s not 16.

One needs a deep foundation in either natural law philosophy or the Scriptures to have a compass to sort those different versions effectively into moral categories - or become a terrible postmodern. Or just go with the local majority. But then what do you do when you move? Europe is introducing polygamy for immigrants through the backdoor while otherwise probably reducing liberties usually on all legal fronts for the locals where they can in all aspects of life.

Hilldale's red rocks are the backside of Zion National Park, beautiful scenery and nice EOW brewery in Colorado City, coffee shops, new large grocery store with beer/wine bar upstairs, we drive through this area often

I grew up on my grandparents ranch next to Short Creek / Colorado City I witnessed 1st hand the brutality of these Pligs towards kids that tried to run away one young girl was found in the waste water treatment pond another boy in the desert. 45 years ago there was only a handful of huge houses and they kept to themselves, neighbors who lived closer had to make sure everything was nailed down or it would disappear. My brothers run the ranch still today and there is no good feelings for these Pligs

Terrific video. I would have stayed away because of what I read about these communities during the Wearrren Jeffs era of domination and how local police were used to keep visitors out. It was run in a way that reflected the group’s paranoiac fears of outsiders. It looks fairly normal now except for those insane statistics reflecting abnormal average ages of residents and the weird distribution of household wealth and poverty. I’m grateful to you for giving a current view of these 3 towns. It is a true public service.

That was weird. In that part of the country, the houses at the edge of town are usually mobile homes or little houses. Hildale starts with large homes, and they just get bigger. And those imposing 8' walls, instead of fences of one or three wires.

This was an interesting one! I've not been to these towns specifically. One time I took a road trip with as friend and we cut across part of Utah. I just remember that the predominantly LDS areas were clean and well kept. Thank you for giving us the tour and a bit of a history lesson as well!

Oh wow! Like my comment on the previous video, we drove through these towns on our drive from St George thru Kayenta on our way to Lufkin. We had no idea of the stats of these places. We were astounded to hear your commentary and found it very interesting. This is the town we noticed a large flag on top of the escarpment in the background. We were thinking that would’ve been in Grand Staircase/Escalante, but were not certain. Thanks again for the video. Still can’t wait to see St George since we pondered the idea of living there. Seemed like a very nice place.

In the early 2000s I drove through these towns. I had read Jon Krakauer's Under the Banner of Heaven and, like someone slowing down to gawk at a car accident, I couldn't resist the detour off I-15 when I was on a road trip from Seattle to Vegas and LA. I noticed the large houses since they were under constant renovation as each new Sister Wife needed her own bedroom. (I suspect most of the employment in these towns was either construction or the local Home Depot.) I drove through without stopping or even slowing down, although I watched my speedometer very closely, same as I do when my road trips take me through Alabama and Mississippi, to avoid giving the local cops any excuse to pull me over. I was already enough of a sitting duck with my Washington license plates but I didn't want to make things worse. This was still before Warren Jeffs was arrested and I knew this was a scary place. I would never have gone anywhere within 100 miles of the area a few years later after I put an Obama bumper sticker on my car. The biggest thing I noticed was that many of the women and girls wore 1800s dresses and bonnets straight out of a Little House on the Prairie rerun. When I lived in the Boston area in the 1980s and 90s and my weekend road trips took me through Island Pond, Vermont, which was at that time (is it still???) the center of some other weirdo religious cult I noticed the same thing. The men and boys wore the same jeans, sweatpants, shorts, T-shirts, hoodies, tank tops and baseball caps that guys everywhere in North America, myself included, typically wear. But the female residents had a strict antiquated dress code. Would the male residents have bought into all this if they had been required to wear the same clothes men wore in the 1800s? Black wool jacket in Arizona in August? No thanks. Thanks for visiting these towns and updating those of us who are only going on information from 20 years ago. Interesting trip here. I really never explored Utah. My wife and I drove through I guess the central part from east to west maybe five years ago. Remember the Salt Lake area desolate area all the way to the Nevada border. I don’t believe there was a town once we left the SLC area. My neighbor went to the Moad area and came back with some awesome pics.

The young people that govern these cities should realize that lawn mowers and street pavers do exist. I do wish you would have had lunch in one of those places. I just watched the Gary, Indiana video, I love how you handle the camera, but the really good thing about your videos is there is no judgemental tone at all. Yup. Since the state doesn't recognize plural marriage, all the women, beside the first wife, are considered single mothers and they and their children are eligible for benefits. The 'corporation' used to have several successful businesses also, (the United Effort Plan, started by FLDS leader John Barlow in 1942 and expanded by Rulon Jeffs, Warren Jeff's father. It was seized I think in 2004 when the boys who got kicked out of the cult, as Joe mentioned in the video, filed a lawsuit against the trust

@markmassy, Construction, farming. They deal in cash and most of the homes are never completed and remain 'under construction' so they don't pay taxes. Fraud is rampant. Google and you'll see so many articles on this. It's a sad situation when you dig into it with many victims and most people turn a blind eye to it.
