I have also been using ACloset to track my outfits for just over a year now, and have also learned a ton. Like you, I was taken aback by how infrequently some of my favourite items were being worn due to them being so specifically seasonal (hello tank tops, summer dresses, shorts and super chunky wool knits). More recently, I have been using the "Hidden deep in the Closet" section of the stats (filtered by the current season) to challenge myself to wear a more rarely worn item almost every day. This worked best in winter and summer, which have more constant and predictable temperatures than the transitional seasons. Because of this experiment, I have managed to wear very near to 100% of my closet. It also allowed me to discover palatable ways to wear "difficult" items for different occasions, and also to make a few decluttering decisions more confidently as I had given them a full season's real attempts to make them work. I recall you advocating towards 100 wears being a good goalpost for using what we have, and I agree this is what things should probably be like when we don't overconsume. And yet, looking at my numbers in ACloset is quite humbling... At the rate I am wearing things, especially highly seasonal ones, I would need to keep some of them for 15-20 years to get to that point. Will they still fit me by then? Will I still want to wear them by then? How likely is it that someone really would make better use of them? And most importantly: how to I adapt my shopping habits to avoid an excess of items like this?
@alamedadanceparty4 ай бұрын
I created a closet in Acloset called "Worn 50+ times" and it helps with analysing what I actually wear Vs what I want to buy and then I realise I'm not going to wear because I live in the UK now and the weather is a big factor with practical dressing. You might get more wear if you have duplicates and eventually reduce the number of duplicates. Or, your stats will kind of force you to think twice when wanting to buy more (it does for me). I have been tracking in the app since since Jan 2022. Love finding others who use that app. It's the best!! 🎉🎉

Well at least you have an idea about your wardrobe and can make more informed decisions about your purchases. I have also more than plenty, but I will cycle out what doesn't really suit me and not make the same buying mistakes again. I also had a habit of buying more summer clothes that I could ever wear, probably because I was dreaming of summer. Now I know to restrict myself and rather only buy a new summer item if I really want it (not only because I want summer to arrive)

I haven't used any wardrobe tracking apps but I have been working with a limited wardrobe and consciously observing what I am wearing, and what I'm not wearing. I realized I hate tshirts, specifically crew necks but I LOVE tank tops, essentially the opposite of your realization. I own an insane amount of tshirts for someone who doesn't feel good wearing them... Both my wallet and my style have benefitted from that self discovery. It's so easy to buy what you've always bought, or buy something because it's cute or a "staple". A little bit of intentionality and mindfulness can go a long way!

I started using one almost a year ago and it's been very helpful with decluttering, making smarter purchasing choices and I've gotten more creating with actually styling outfits instead of simply wearing clothes. I did switch from ACloset to Whering along the way because I didn't want to pay lol but apart from that I highly recommend both of these apps. Fingers crossed that Whering stays free!

I once knew a gal who had a shoe box of 3x5 cards with every clothing item she owned on cards. Then she made up outfits and rotated through things in such a way that she seemed to never wear the same thing twice. I wonder if she's now moved onto this sort of online app? I agree with you on so many of your insights. My hang up was if I bought something to wear to work never figuring out how to wear it for special/nice occasions (and thereby get more use out of it). It helps to have a smaller wardrobe so I am forced to use that work suit as a funeral outfit or at least use the skirt with a nice blouse. This is assuming that the work suit has the best fit. I wish for you confidence to wear your red pants to a special occasion and being happy with the choice. Look at the fabric type, cut and whether you have coordinating items (shirt? shoes? sweater?) Then even if the pants are red you will look fantastic! Best to you on your youtube journey!

Hi Shawna, would you consider comparing couponing to overconsumption? I feel like people who take couponing to extreme levels (having mini warehouses in their garages of products) are justifying it by it being either free or really cheap and useful, saving money. But the amount of products they own seems unhealthy. Almost like justified hoarding. I'd love to know your take on that.

It is really hard for me to understand what "being bored with your outfits" feels like. I have 5 same t-shirts (like really absolutely identical) and i wear them every day. I didn't even buy them, they were left to me from my dad 3 years ago. Also i have three same pairs of pants that i wear every day all year round. Sooo, i AM wearing the same clothes, and this is not a minus for me, but on the contrary, it’s convenient, I don’t have to think about what to wear, I don’t have to worry. But maybe i am just not into fashon and clothes. But It's always interesting to understand how other people view it

Today’s my 30th day of tracking my closet on the OpenWardrobe app haven’t missed a day so far. I’m going to try to do it for as long as I can. Hopefully I can get good takeaways like you but I have noticed I only gravitate towards my most comfortable clothes. So that’s great to know and that I have a ton of clothes I need to stop shopping and just keep wearing what I’ve got to get a good cost per wear. It is hard to get a good cost per wear considering I bought 2 new shirts yesterday and I already have a ton of clothes🤦🏻♀🤦🏻♀🤦🏻♀🤦🏻♀🤦🏻♀🤦🏻♀ I did already make outfits for them so that’s great! I haven’t repeated a top in 30 days so that should tell you how many clothes I have 😂 I haven’t really shopped too much this year luckily but I gained weight so I needed to buy shorts my size and I also need jeans. I’m still trying not to shop tho so I can get more wear out of my one jean that fits me. I’m at $1.20 cost per wear on those jeans🥳🥳🥳🥳🥳🥳🥳

I get into the trap of loving the fantasy version of a piece of clothing instead of the version that is in my closet. So e.g. the skirt I love does not get much wears because in reality it sits funny on me ( longer in the front shorter in the back).

Hi Shawna, you can try to cut into the elastic on the sheer sleeves of the black top with manicure scissors, which should make it less tight. Elastic usually has several rubber bands, so you can carefully cut couple of them, you may have to do it in couple different spots if elastic is sewn into the trim

there definitely is a time commitment to uploading your first pieces, which is why I only uploaded one season at first. There was a bit of a learning curve with the first few pieces but it was quick to learn. You could always take the photos one day, and then do the uploading a different day to spread it out. If you are willing to spend 2-3 hours (even if it's over a few days) it could totally be a fun project.

I’ve heard you say in other videos how you want to wear things 100 times. I thought you’d find that you had far fewer wears than expected once you tracked. I’ve tracked before and you just don’t wear things as much as you’d expect. It also plays into purchasing. Wearing everything 100 times total means that we can only buy 3-4 bottoms and 3-4 tops each year or it’s mathematically impossible to hit 100 wears because new stuff comes in too fast.
@shawnaripari4 ай бұрын
My goal is still to wear things 100 times, but not wearing something 100 times in a year is totally fine with me! I expect more wear out of certain items like t-shirts and jeans, and less out of other items like wool sweaters. I still find the 100 uses question helpful to me personally, because it still helps me estimate how long it'll take me to hit that number and if it'd be committed to that. Some of the pieces in here like the graphic t-shirts I've mentioned, I've tracked via other mediums before, and they have well and truly gone beyond 100 wears over their lifetime. Other, newer, stuff hasn't
@Wanda-v4b4 ай бұрын
@@shawnaripari what I mean is you could only buy that much per year (actually less) if those are your goals over the life of the garment, not just in one year since you already have stuff and the next year you would presumably make some purchases. Definitely good to have goals for high wear, I’m not being critical. I just find the math side interesting for what that means on the purchasing end.
