Booktuber here! (A tiny one, anyway.) You’re completely correct-promoting overconsumption is absolutely an issue in the book space, and I personally can’t get behind the idea that buying books is a separate hobby from reading. I’d add that viewers should keep in mind that the big booktubers are sent books from publishers for free (sometimes lots) in order to market them-owning a massive book collection is not the norm, and you’re not less of a reader for using the library or having a small collection 😊

Sometimes I'll buy new books as a gift for a friend or specifically to financially support a living author that I like. Or sometimes I'll want a copy of a book so that I can foist it upon my friends and lend out a book I really love, like Kissing the Witch by Emma Donoghue or Giovanni's Room by James Baldwin. I've been really into librivox and public domain audiobooks lately; I listened to Anna Karenina and Dracula last year, along with some old timey rom-coms. I got all of the Toni Morrison novels on thriftbooks for $50 for a class, and when I was done reading them, I put them into a local Little Free Library because I lived in Texas and I knew that some people were pushing for her work to be banned from public libraries and schools. I loved those novels, so I gave them away. But I kept my favorite, which was Sula.

Well said! I'm doing a book buying ban for 2024 (although I have caved in four times and bought two books about politics and the impact of MSM, but it's an election year, so I can justify this as self development, one Italian textbook for self development and one fiction book for which I have no excuse). The number of books I have been influenced to buy is absolutely crazy and it got out of control in 2020 to 2023. I am trying to read what I have, not be influenced by new releases and then unhaul the ones I will never read again. I have enough to last 7 or 8 years and I'm not at all proud of that.

When you spoke about hair loss, you hit on a topic that my age group deals with. Perimenopausal & menopausal women are extremely vulnerable to marketing for a thousand products because of our cultural fear of aging. It's almost impossible to not fall prey to it. The message, in short, is that once it becomes apparent that you are no longer young, you are irrelevant. The message is to FIGHT aging, at any cost. It's true. If women understood what they spend on their physical appearance over their lifetime, they would be shocked!🇨🇦♥️

They want old women to feel irrelevant because capitalism considered wisdom from the female perspective a threat. It also considers wisdom from any of the working class experiencing and surviving oppression a threat, which is why capitalism wants its workers to die young or fear aging, so that knowledge of how to avoid exploitation doesn't pass down to younger generations. Meanwhile billionaire men fantasize about how to live to be 200+ and travel through space. The double standards are ridiculous and it's part of why Republican states are trying to prevent laws against child marriage passing as well as lower the ages for child labor.

When speaking about kids, instead of buying toys and things that they will get bored of and/or will just cause more clutter or chaos in your home, look at family passes for zoos, water parks, children’s museums, or aquariums. If you are looking for free activities, see if your local park or library has weekly activities. Our local park has family movie nights with a projector for free!!! We go to the dollar tree and allow everyone to pick out 1 candy, and then we go and enjoy. We go to book readings every Tuesday during the summer at the library. There are also language classes for kids for free and crafts days. I take my kids to the farmers market and give them $5 to pick out produce and then we cook it together for dinner. Any experiences are going to be more of a memory making opportunity than a toy that will just end up in a landfill. One of our Christmas gifts each year is our family zoo membership, for example!

I would absolutely love if you did a video on the addiction of Bath and body Works. I find it so fascinating. If you do some research, you will see the levels. The way they never bring scents back on purpose so people feel like they need to stock up on them, the constant release of new merchandise that people feel that they absolutely need. People have hundreds of body mists but every time they come out with new ones they have to have them. The coupon system, if they have a 10 off of 40 purchase people feel they have to go in and spend that 30 to get the 10 off the people behind-the-scenes at Bath and body Works are marketing geniuses and I think this would be such an interesting video. The amount of people that have hundreds and hundreds of candles and never feel Like it’s enough because they are constantly coming out with new ones that they don’t know if they’ll ever bring back so they have to go get. I have seen people set aside weekly budget for Bath and body Works. One thing about the kitchen items like a waffle maker that helped my family: when we want to make a recipe that necessitates something like a fondue set, we thrift one for about 6$ and when we are done the event, we clean and return it as a donation to the thrift store. We see it as renting an item for 6$ with an unlimited return period so it's nice to know we always have that option and then our kitchen cupboards stay much emptier. Another way to do these is to share these purchases with another home especially like a wafflemaker is something our family doesn't do that regularly so passing it around makes it more realistic and ensures we can have one when needed, and it actually is more encouraging to use it when it's for a limited time. This is even better if the purchase has already been made

I've gotten a lot better at only buying books that I'm actually going to read, and then when I'm done, I give them to friends or put them in my local little free libraries. I love being able to look at books and reference them, but I get so much joy out of giving a book I really love to people I think will appreciate them that it really encourages me to give them up. I also tend to only buy books at thrift stores. Especially if a book is trendy, in 2 or 3 years it'll be all over the thrift store.

In addition to the e-reader and book issue, I'd like to add that you don't even really need to purchase a tablet version of Kindle either. Kindle has a free, legitimate app that works on computers and most phones. I don't know if this solution will help everyone esp. if spending in general is your issue, but I will say this: me personally, I find that looking at how much I'm gonna spend per book makes me second-guess buying any titles I know I won't read as soon as I finish whatever it is I'm in the middle of. My TBR keeps me on track as well, but I also know some people build TBRs for pretty much the same reason that they shop for books they'll never actually read-- simply because they can. Still, I hope this advice helps a few people out. My only other solution for getting digital books is finding online PDF files of titles I either don't want to own in *any* form, have been out of print for decades or aren't available in any other form except like, an expensive hardcover or something.

Yo, Mom of one 4 year old daughter. The park, early morning or cooler evening, before the sun sets. Indoor playgrounds, look them up, think Chuck'E Cheese, but without the casino. Family Game Night, make it a contest over the summer amongst the family and include parent vouchers. These vouchers include choice for dinner, one chore mitigated back to the parent, spedning alone time with the parent of choice, getting to choose the next game for family game night. Kids don't want much, but they love getting to have some say in things. Farmers Market, Movie Night at the Park, a water balloon fight at the park, the beach, movies. There is so much to do even at home and you just need to be open to spending time together.

Another thing to note about the book buying. I read a lot, like multiple books a week and I prefer to read romantasy. For that circumstance, it is cheaper to use kindle unlimited than it is to wait for books from my 5 library cards or buy them outright. That doesn't work for everyone but it is an option. Another thing, if you read mostly comics, libraries that have hoopla have collections just as good as the amazon comic subscription.

I'm not a parent, but a "free" thing that my family did during the summer when I was a child was playground hop. My mom (teacher, so not working during the summer) would drive my sister and me around and go to different playgrounds for a day and "test them out." My mom liked it beacuse we were outside in a resonably confined area getting out or energy. When we got bored of a certain area, we would load into the car and drive to a new one. Playgrounds, especially at schools are free to park and enter. The money part is paying for gas and groceries for a picnic lunch. I didn't know until last year that this activiy was set up by my mom as a cheap activity for when we would be living off a single income for a couple months. I always just thought it was a fun things to do. Another free activity was going to the pubic library and reading. We would select books to read while in the library and ones to take home. This is good for days when it's too hot to be outside. Public libraries also might have free or discounted passes to attractions in your area. I know the city where I currentlly live has passes to multiple museams, aquariums, zoos, move theaters, even parking/entry passes for recration areas like the beach or hiking trails. You pay for the library services with tax money, you might as well use all their recources. My sister and I went to Girl Scout camp as a significatly reduced rate beacuse my mom signed up to be a councler at the camp. So if you are a parent (like a teacher) that is able to work at a camp over the summer it's a way to get your kids into camp for cheaper. Becoming a member at a zoo, aquarium, or museum is a significant upfront cost, but once you're a member you can go as much as you want for "free" and get discounts on camps or activities that the facitlity runs. At my local zoo to repay a family (2 adult, 3 kid) membership the family would need to attend the zoo 4 times in a year. They also have free member only events like an advanced opening day for zoo lights, pumpkin displays and even adult only events like a food truck night. That's all I can think of right now, other than the standard run through a sprinkler in the backyard;

A mom with a small child here. Regarding books and toys - for a solid year and a half after the birth of my child, me and my husband were true minimalists. We only bought what was absolutely necessary and were very picky about the quality and number of stuff. I wish we stayed like that, but we didn’t. When she was a little over a year and a half, something changed. I don’t if it was the pandemic or the loneliness or lack of support or something else or the combination of all of that. We just felt like she was missing out on all the toys that we could afford back then but didn’t buy on purpose. So we started buying everything in sight for her age, all of the toys and all of the books. After some time I noticed 2 things: 1) She got used so fast to getting new things pretty frequently; 2) Every time she got a new toy or a book, she would get bored of it even faster then it was the case with the last thing she got. Not to mention how fast she‘s growing up and how here interests keep changing, like you said in the video. The same thing is with the clothes. Last summer I went ahead and bought her a bunch of cute dresses because I knew how much she loved wearing them. And she did wear them the while sommer but the summer temperatures only last for like 3 months if we are lucky. So before I knew it it was already fall again and I had to store all of her summer clothes in a box and find place for it in our already overfilled tiny one bedroom apartment. And speaking of her dresses- no matter how many she owns, she‘ll always have her favourites and wear them the most. So I learned the hard way that children DON‘T need that much stuff at all. A little bit of clothes, a few toys and a few favourite books are more than enough. All they really need are love, time and attention from their parents. And plenty of imagination, too. 😊

My kindle was $30 on ebay; I use one of the old discontinued 3rd generations with the keyboard since I like to annotate my books. I mostly read fanfiction on it, as a little treat for turning of the screens before bedtime. It doesn't blast my face with blue light so it's really good for bedtime reading. Every few years I do something stupid and break the screen, but I'm able to get a new one since it's only $30. Now that Amazon took the old generations off the kindle store, I have to load books onto it via USB connection to the computer, but I really don't mind doing that. Highly recommend getting a much older e-reader if you're on a budget... they don't need a super powerful core processor to display text, you can hold thousands of books on a few GB of storage, and they're way cheaper. Thanks!

I have very fine hair with low porosity. The oils that have worked are Philip B (both oils they sell), organigrowhairco scalp beverage, innate hair life rosemary hair oil, & BUR BUR. Also derma rolling 2x a week. That has helped me with post partum hair loss & overall hair heath. They only help your scalp & hair to its full potential it won’t change your hair to be completely different.

Doing a no-buy this month as I have spent far too much recently. I’m a student living with my parents so I have no expenses. Therefore I’ve locked my card so I physically can’t use it 😂 I hope it will give me the chance to really think about what I should spend my money on rather than impulse shopping

The point about books interests me - I am an avid reader (I have been since I can remember)! I used to take the maximum amount of books out of the library each week that I was allowed. I have multiple shelves and boxes of books because it’s my passion! It has nothing to do with booktube or booktok (I recognise their worth however for people looking to get into reading)😊 I am curious as to your take about being influenced to buy books because it’s your passion and it’s a sense of self Vs. Buying as a result of being influenced from social media video? Do you think there is a difference between being potentially spur of the moment “influenced” as opposed to an absolute passion? Love the videos ❤

Yep. Mom guilt is the worst. No matter what I do I feel like I am not doing enough, especially in the Summer. My teen son sees other people going on these huge vacations that I can’t afford and also can’t mentally deal with because I have a neurodivergent brain. He tends to bring this up often. He also doesn’t really hang out with friends due to being ASD and it puts a lot of pressure on me. He relies on me socially more than an average teen would.

for books: i give myself 1 "book credit" for every two books i read, my reading list is mostly old books that are hard to find or not even translated to my language and i keep a list of books i plan to buy and a maximun montly budget that is pretty low (about 20 bucks), so i buy about 3 books per month (i read an average of 6, but sometimes i read 10 or 3, i like to reread books i love). for cosmetics: if i buy a product that gives me allergies i give it to my family, but if i just dont like it i use it with my other products like, if is a moisturizer that i disliked, i use it on an area that needs less moisturizing, if its a hair leave-in i mix it in my deep conditioner.

Analytical chemist with a bit of experience in cosmetic chemistry here. Companies do consumer testing on products. That’s why you get language like “appearance of” or “feel of.” The consumers test the products and answer yes or no questions or give a scale of 1-5 responses. That’s why products can say certain things. It’s when you move into definitive language that the fda has to get involved because those are drug claims and you can’t sell drugs with out them being double blind tested and approved.

The only time I buy books now is if I can't get it through my library or the Libby and Hoopla apps. I read them once and don't have space to store books. Plus, they're expensive and can add up quickly.

Re the Kindle thing: if they already have a smartphone I cannot comprehend why one would want to add another digital device to the mix. I just put the stuff on my phone and then I always have reading material with me wherever I'm going without having to take an extra device. And it's one less battery to have to deal with, one less tech item around designed for obsolescence that needs special recycling when it finally shits the bed.

Now that I have an iPhone that has 256 GB, I can get on board with having books on my phone but previously to this phone my i phones had 8 to 16 GB which is not enough at all to have books on your phone unfortunately. This phone I have now that has lots of storage was 4x more expensive than the other phones I had. So sometimes I think it comes down to cost. Is what im thinking 🤔
@maddie84157 ай бұрын
I agree that a phone can easily be a good e-reader...but for me I have a hard time with the screen. I change the brightness/color/tint and still feel more eye strain (that leads to migraines) than with a print book. For that reason only I'm thinking of getting a Kindle.

I bought an ereader because it's much lighter than my phone, easier to hold, easier on my eyes and a much much longer battery life. For me it made to much sense and improves my life. I also bought it second hand. I will say ereaders seem immune to the planned obsolescence in other tech. I had one that was more than 15 years old and was still entirely functional, other than certain software updates that were unavailable and made me decide to replace it. I expect mine now to last me a really long time.

About the books, you can read the books in Barnes and Noble, like you can literally walk in pick up a book you want to read and sit down and read it in the store without buying it, I think this is a better way of enjoying books bc you’re creating time to read by being in the store and if you don’t have the time to sit there and read for however long then you wouldn’t have read it in your free time at home

To get my girls to play out side more often without purchasing specific outdoor toys, I just tell them to take their toys outside. They've come up with new games for themselves by taking their stuffed animals and animal figurines outside. We've also done picture contests with plastic animals while taking a walk, we all take a photo of the animal during our walk and then choose the best photo at the end. We've also painted rocks and then put them along the hiking paths we were on.

As a mom, I’m big on an occasional Dollar Tree toy as a special treat. It may not last the day but it was cheaper than a Sonic drink. Also, look at something your kid really loves. A zoo membership is usually about $100 a year and if you go at least once a month it’s more than worth it.

Two things that help me not spend money are: 1. Not physically leaving my house. I tend to spend more money if I go out and about 2. Put your wants and needs in perspective. If I think I want a new designer bag or whatever, I think about me walking in the town of a developing country with that bag. Like, that bag means nothing when the people around me are living in poverty. Can you imagine Paris Hilton or whoever walking around with her fancy clothes and accessories in the outskirts of the Dominican Republic? What an odd world we live in

I often joke with my husband about the self care items marketed to women like shampoo. When I am shopping in the hair isle especially I like to say I am trying to find the product that tell me all the right lies. That is essentially what most of the marketing strategy is now for all sorts of things. It isn't just aimed at women either. I am seeing a lot of men's self care that hypes up claims that are completely unrealistic.

I prefer videos about talking about specific items and why you probably don't need them over videos covering tiktok restock overindulgence because for me it's just very obvious that I don't need to spend $100 on candy and it just feels like the tiktok was made to annoy people lol In other words, I want to be told not to buy specific/popular items instead of gawking at people flaunting their money. Personally. But I still like all your videos (:

Great video again! The 100 times usage was a weird one for my kind of obsession which is physical media - books, blu rays, cd's and vinyls. Do I count them as a category? Since it seems kind of weird to read the same book 100 times. Good video, again! :)

totally agree this doesn't work for everything! I think this question works best for fashion items and potentially electronics and kitchen items. For media, other metrics or considerations are probably better. I personally tend to think about books through re-reads and track records. Do I have a track record of enjoying AND reading this kind of book/author. Or, do I know or believe I'll re-read this book. I know people have a lot of takes or opinions on book ownership so don't take my own application as "the" right way because it's just one way! I personally only strive to own books I believe I'll re-read, which narrows things down considerably. It forces me to rely on libraries for the majority of my reading.
@ParadoxQeet7 ай бұрын
@@shawnaripari True what you said about libraries. I have about one and a half billy ikea bookshelf of books that I reread when I need inspiration (frugaility, finance etc). i dont know, i think our waffle iron gets a justifiable amount of use. it's not every weekend but otoh we have owned it for probably 15 years. i have young kids, we have the same summer toys (some balls, some water toys, some sand toys, stomp rocket, bubble stuff, chalk) for several years in a row now. these are all cheap items and also get reasonable yes, especially when friends visit or making a trip to the lake. i think the harder thing is like keeping my son in a bicycle that is the appropriate size as he grows so fast. that's a higher price issue.
