My oldest clothing, if you can call i clothes, is a winter scarve that my mother gave me in december 2008, i had a big opperation on my brain, and had to shave my hair, in winter in switzerland, so i used it to protect my head from the cold, and i now still use it around my neck ever winter. I love it.

Great topic, I think that a lot of people have kind of forgotten that clothes can last (and be enjoyed) for so long. The rise of extremely fast fashion has a lot of people viewing clothing as disposable or as items that "expire" in some way. It does take a degree of thought and intention to buy something that will work in the long term, so I'm glad you're sharing your thoughts. The jacket I've had the longest and still have in rotation is from 1999! I bought it with my Christmas money when I was 14. It's a leather coat from the Leather Limited and was about $200 back then (by far the most expensive thing I'd ever owned). It's still in great condition and is a very timeless style. My primary winter coat is a wool Eddie Bauer one that I got second hand about 12 years ago. It's something my mom would have worn about 30 years ago, and that's definitely about the age of this coat. The inner lining has some rips, but it's really comfortable and warm...and gets me a lot of compliments still!

My oldest piece of clothing is a sweater from when I was 15 years old. I am now 41 years old and I still wear it. I have another sweater from when I was 16 or 17 and I wear that too. I have some clothes from college, too.

My mom gave me a Calvin Klein Jean jacket that she used to wear in her twenties. It’s probably 30 years old but still my favorite and go to Jean jacket. Been wearing it since 2016!! This video was such a breath of fresh air. I hate how disposable everything is nowadays.

I know I've said this one million times, but I've lost a crap ton of weight. So i have no old clothes. My oldest piece of clothing is my jean jacket. It was pricey, I think the brand is Kut. It fit me fat and now not as fat. To me, jean jackets are timeless. I really liked the dress on you. Your favorite tshirt absolutely says Shawna. 🎉 Oh my gosh, I fell down the stairs at the Adam Ant concert a couple of months ago, but my boots hung on!😂

I wear a lot of my worn out clothes when I’m at home to preserve my nicer clothes which is only worn when I am out of the house. I’ve had clothes over a decade old and it’s a hit or miss when it comes to quality. Price doesn’t matter because some of my cheapest clothes have lasted over a decade while some of my expensive ones have deteriorated.

Please take your boots to a cobbler to glue them with shoe glue. Tripping down the stairs can permanently disable you, you got lucky and health is more important than one pair of shoes! PS I’ve recycled old sneakers and leather shoes- there’s shoe recycling into construction materials - check out if that’s available in your area.

My oldest piece is a tshirt that my mom bought me in the thrift when I was around 12 (so like 13 years ago). It still looks okay, I wear it around the house and I refuse to get rid of it till it's absolutely torn apart - purely because she's a fighter and has been with me for so long.

Great video! I’m also thinking about tracking the wear on my clothes and aiming for 100 wears. When I calculated that it will take over 13 years of wearing a dress everyday until I reach 100 wears on my 50 dresses it stuck me how crazy it actually is to own this many dresses. And dresses are not even in the day to day rotation. 🙈

My oldest piece of clothing is this really nice grey nike hoodie. I got it in 2014 and it is still in awesome condition, despite me wearing it every week. But also it makes me sad because I noticed how quality of clothing dropped since then...now I rarely have something that lasts more than 5 years. :C

My style definitely changed a lot over the last 15 years. One of the oldest pieces I love and wear regularly is a long pleated polka dot skirt that my mom made for herself some 40 years ago. I think I've owned it for at least 13 years. And definitely yes to adjustability - the best, most comfortable and longest used pieces for me are those with elastic waistbands 😄

hmmm I'll think about it but I don't know if that video would be verry interesting coming from me. When it comes to second hand clothes (which is the bulk of what I'm buying now, or trying to anyways) I'm not too picky with materials because environmental and cost factors are not the same and I don't have any sensory issues with specific materials. For new clothes, that's a bit more complicated and highly context dependent and I'm still learning. If you want to hear about fabrics from an expert go check out Jenifer Wang, she's amazing!

My absolute oldest piece of clothing is a floral cotton midi dress that my mom bought in the mid 90's and passed on to me a couple years ago. I wear it about once a week and love it so much. The clothing I've owned the longest is a sweatshirt from 2007-2008 from my high school dance team with my name embroidered on the front. I mostly hang on to it to wear at home because I can't donate it-who would want a hoodie with someone else's name on it? 😅

My oldest is a leather jacket I bought in 2013. It cost me a few hundred back then but it’s still in like new condition (ZERO defects). I wear it all the time. It’s a waterfall design that keeps coming back in style every winter since then (only now they use “vegan leather” for the same few hundred dollars).

I have a t shirt branded with the first base my husband and I lived when he was in the Air Force, it’s about 10 years old. I wore it through my pregnancies and now it’s my “hair dye” shirt 😂

Some stuff I've had for over 10 years: A simpel black leather belt, a pair of Timberland boots that I clean and grease every year (but is now needs a new sole and havent found someone that's able to do it). Also a Jack wolfskin outdoor jacket that you can zip a fleece jacket in (so it's a rain coat and seperate fleece jacket in the summer and very warm wintercoat in colder times). Some other older favorites: A very stretchy and flowy jumpsuit I've been wearing for 3 summers, also a second hand denim jacket that my aunt sewed side pockets in, also some nice backpacks, a wool sweater. Bought a lined wool coat last winter and I think that's going to last me many seasons because I wanted something that would look more feminine and classy than the outdoor jacket, and it works perfectly for that. Also have some basic crewneck sweaters and hoodies I've had for a long time. Also with the gear for my dogs, I bought them one good harness (nonstop dogwear line harness) and a good collar and i have 2 biothane long leashes (because used to have 2 dogs, currently one) which I'll keep using forever since they just don't break. One hurtta soft grip short leash I've had for about 10 years and it still works perfectly fine. Kept the harness of the dog that has passed away and plan to use it on the next dog if it fits. I'm really trying to buy a lot of things that last me a long time but also pick my battels. I know jeans won't last me too long, so I'll just not buy expensive ones. Same with t shirts. But for sweaters, jackets, bags, etc I try to buy quality. Currently building a home gym and recently bought a barbell and plates second hand, but from a brand I know will last. And gives lifetime warranty (the seller gave me the original receipts)

I have a cropped jean jacket with 3/4 sleeves that I’ve been wearing since 2013. Before that it was my mothers, so it’s at least 15 years old now. I also have quite a few pieces from 2015 and 2016, and some old clothes from the 90s that used to be my mother’s or aunt’s, or even a jacket from my uncle

I think its fab to go find those treasured items. I think my oldest top is a summer top I bought in 2007 randomly from French Connection, I was gutted when it didn’t fit for a few years but it does again, and I love putting it on every summer. Unfortunately its starting to go now, but I managed to find a nearly new one on Vinted so now I can replace it when the underarms go and stillhave my lovely top. Alot of my work wardrobe dates from 2008-2012 (office dresses and suits) and even my active wear is from around then, bar a few new pieces to replace worn out bits. I have had a change of style the last year and have bought a fair amount (maybe 20 items) to reflect my age but I intend to keep and wear everything I bought for a long time. Yes, a few pieces may be Zara (my oldest Zara top I still wear is from 2011) but I treat my clothes well to make them last.

I have a different philosophy when it comes to hemming jeans - I will hem them every time because I’m short and I don’t want to limit my options because of something as simple as hemming.

I think my oldest clothes might be the sweater I got the last time I worked in the US (2014, from a thrift store so it's even older than that), the indestructible yoga pants I got from Walmart on that trip, and the sports-brand coat I bought when I got home to the cold of the UK. I've also got a couple of tops I wear over dance leotards, that I think I got in 2015? Even my gymnastics leotards are from 2015 when I was most active in the sport. I had no money for the longest time, so I'm used to buying from the very cheapest shops and then having to somehow make those items last for years of regular wear and washing when they normally wouldn't outlast a two-week vacation 😅

Is that a British thing to say coat? If it's longer than hip length, it's a coat to me. No shade, I just am intrigued by language differences.

i think the oldest piece of clothing i own is a tube scaf i got in 2010 when i started first grade, and i still use it regurarly during winter. as for other clothes, the oldest are from 2019 i think (3 pairs of shoes, a few t shirts and tops), because i was still growing a lot before then so everything else is too small, but the clothes i have now i really hope i'll be able to wear them when im 30 in a decade. actually this made me realise i have a pair of vans i got in 2017 but i think they are way too small for me now eveen tho i stil wear them, maybe not the best thig for my feet lmao. great video, realy makes you think about how clothes can actually last a long time :) (okay to the second hand thing, i do have one sweater from like the 90s that i got from my mom, it had a few holes but i just stitched them up and it's like a new piece... it's lasted wvery well)

I just got rid of my oldest comfy clothes because they were literally falling apart 😂I've had some of them since I was in school and I'm close to 40 right now so it makes sense that they ripped with the slightest tug. They also had a billion tiny holes in them and sometimes when I would step out to get a delivery or something it did make me a bit self conscious 😅Got the same style of secondhand comfy shirts to replace them.

I have been through a lot of moves and voth lost and gained weight over the last 2 decades, so I do not have very many clothes that still git from way back when. I have a linnen maxidress I got at 18 (in 2003) that I am so close to fitting into again. I also have a t-shirt and a tshirt dress that I got 2015 that are still favourites. Most of my clothes are from around 2017/2018 when I nade my second last international move. When you move ciuntry with 2 suitcases you sadly have to be pretty ruthless and can not afford to be sentimental with clothes. My mother is the opposite. She has a lot of storage and rotate her closet frequently. She has a winter coat she bought in Canada when she was an au pair in 1978, that she wears every 10 or so years when it is back in fashion. When it comes to capsule wardrobes I think the main downfall of them is that the clothes have a larger chance of getting worn to pieces and if you love something that is not fun.

The oldest cloth I have that I can still wear is over 25 years old (1999) and the oldest of all (not wearable) is a pink dress I wore when I was either 1 year old or a few months old. Older clothing are made differently and you can pass them onto the next generation. Clothes today aren't durable enough to pass on. The fabric is so poorly woven that even if you are a professional mender of clothing... no amount of maintenance skills will keep these new modern clothing together for long. There are cases in which modern clothing have excellent material, but poor craftsmanship (the sewing technique used was poorly executed). Case in point, my brothers' work pants are made of excellent material. The fabric isstoring and crisp, but the individual who sewed then didn't do a good job at putting the pieces together and the seams undid themselves. The problem was using weak thread and there was only one single stitch (no double stitching which is important around the high impact areas, such as the butt and thigh areas where most friction occurs). Double stitching makes a huge difference in durability in clothing, so I look into that, not just the fabric.
