I am working in my mansion, tearing out the master staircase, evaluating house damages, admiring century old construction, and making an organized job site. I am using a few simple hand tools, strong arms, great friends, and a positive, happy, attitude. Learning about new tools, making mistakes, laughing, having fun, making a dream come to life, and more.

He'll do his patent squatting down in front of the camera, face filling the entire screen, and explain to us like we're 3 years old why our opinions are wrong, why what he's doing is the only way, how he's talked to people and doesn't need to bring in subcontractors, and how people will come from miles around just to get a glimpse of the finished product. Then he'll walk out to the bin site that he was the general contractor on and show us how it's continuing to degrade two years after it was built.

The stairs could have been restored and lasted another hundred years. They were installed level so they would have gone back to level and a little glue and back braces would have taken care of the squeaks. It would have been cool to have your kids use the stairs your Grandparents used. In the end it will be all new with little from the past. It’s yours so love it.

Iowa building code, as with nearly other place, recognizes that rebuilding interior stairs in an existing home to meet current building codes could be impossible. So you do not need to actually tear out old stairs even if you gut a home. BUT, if you do tear out the old stairs then you do need to meet building code. So Cole potentially made a really big problem because it is pretty clear they do not have any building plans yet. They should really have an architect or experienced contractor advising them on all this stuff.

They just rationalized not doing the work necessary to preserve what deserved preserving and took shortcuts and touted safety and modernization. Taking down those stairs is like watching a trophy hunter stand next to an elephant and extol its beautiful tusks and magnificent form. You killed it and for what.? Beautiful windows, beautiful doors with mirrors., beautiful ceilings., beautiful wood stairs, Straight to the burn pile. . The only floor that will look better, the basement. It won't be the finest mansion west of the Mississippi, just a house on a hill with nice siding and a porch. The rest of the farm looks nice thou.

But, for now, we'll continue to grow older together. I'm sure my house will be standing when I'm gone, but I hope the next family to live here will leave some of the old girl in place. Cole saved some of what made his great great grandpa's home special, but we forget he did not build the house. It was some other family's dream home when Cole's great bought it. Now the house is becoming a dream come true for this young family starting out. It's a brave new world ahead of them and their descendants. Sometimes old is just that, old and outdated and lost its usefulness in this fast paced, progressive, and throwaway world. 😢

Originally my iaundry was in the basement. But some years ago my hubby moved it upstairs. It's off the kitchen and adjacent to the master bedroom. Now that our kids have grown up and it's just the two of us (and I have gotten older. ) I'm really glad he did this for me. Used to hate laundry day! Taking all those heavy dirty clothes down the stairs (broke my ankle once) then back up to put away. Since you are planning such a big kitchen, take a little space for a laundry! Neve will thank you for it... oh, I had hubby put a recessed light in the ceiling of the shower. Us girls gotta see our bits in order to wash thoroughly. Hubby likes it too....

Sorry for making you feel that way. Trust me, it is not easy for me to see those things too being grown up with the scarcity mind set (that’s why I’m saving boards for the chicken shed😄), but everything Cole does and we decide as a group is the best decision to our knowledge. Everything has its time and purpose, and I am sure 100 years later someone will just bulldoze this house while everyone else is going to say it is foolish. The house is to accommodate one’s own needs, so it provides comfort, shelter and safety for the family it is definitely not something to praise or worship. People that this house is going to be a home for is much more important. All in all I understand why you might be upset, but ultimately it is for the family that’s going to spend their life here ☺️

@@RomegromThe smartest thing you can do for yourself and your family is to get away from Cole. There are plenty of successful farmers out there in that area looking for good help. Outside of picking up and hauling away his grandfather's junk what has he done? Why isn't he invited to the local big farm shows, he did one but that was just as a speaker which looks like it had a handful of people show up including those in his family. People in the area look at this farm and laugh. He's good at spending money that he doesn't have. Ask Justin what it's going to take to get the house back to a livable condition... I bet he says $400,000 and that's without the addition. Everything on the farm is junk, leased, or borrowed. Cole wants to be like the Millennial Farmer, Larson Farms, Welkers, etc... but he's too full of himself to get there. He refuses to take advise from those who know what they're doing, which is why you have failed projects like the bin site. He's suing the builder, but who signed off on all of the plans... Cole. Planting season is weeks away, from what's being shown on this and his dad's YT page they haven't even looked at the planting equipment. I can see a farm sale in their future, his dad knows what's coming because he lived through the farm crisis of the 1980's.

Just for correct info sake, the Argon gas acts as an insulation between the layers of glass. It has no U V protection properties. The U V protection comes from a layer, or film placed on the inside of the glass. This is known as Low e, or low emittance glass. This film filters out the ultraviolet rays that can cause fading of whatever is inside such as carpet, woodwork and other fabrics. It also helps keep your house cooler in summer. That old staircase could be dismantled, refinished and reassembled, but that is just me. I don't mean to be critical Cole. I love watching your videos and have been a fan for years, Being in the building industry for nearly 35 years and being an old curmudgeon i have a lot of sentimentality!

I don't think Cole understands how valuable a lot of the wood he's removing is worth. This Old House did an entire episode on that subject. Several of their projects thry actually went shopping for it. Including an old stairwell like the one they tore out. Even boards can be run thru a planner/joiner and re-used. I myself have done that to build a multi shelf and drawer microwave stand. There's a warehouse facility in New Orleans that specializes in selling it.
