Awesome video as always! Suggestion; maybe keep a dry-erase board in the shop, some come with a calendar; then you could write down deadlines for things needing to be done by a certain date, and for making to-do lists for needed items; maintenance, etc.

During the annual fire inspections in the complex where our machine shop was, the firemen always commented on how neatly organized and clean our shop was. Our Dad taught us to organize the place much like what you have done with your shop. One can be much more productive when everything is organized.

We sold bearings, belts, pulleys, nuts, bolts and all matter of product you would use on the farm. Our main job was designing, building and maintaining machines for manufacturing . We stocked 125,000 part numbers on site. We had a further 8 million available. I fought inventory climb for 30 years. I fully understand an organized shop. I also understand having what you need.. not too much or too little. Inventory is the expense that keeps on costing. You cant be without it , but it will hurt or kill your business if not controlled. A farm is a business.

Excellent video. I appreciate your continuing quest for improved efficiency. Have you ever thought about having 4 large, heavy duty rolling tool carts (say 60" x 30" x 58") with 6" caster wheels on each cart that would have your most used tools on each? That way each person could roll their tool cart to the work project area and have almost everything they need within arm’s reach. You may choose to stock these carts with tools like hammers, socket sets, wrenches, pliers, vice grips, screw drivers, drills, impact drivers, torque wrenches, tape measures, oil filter wrench, oil drain pan, wire brushes, zip ties, rags, mechanics gloves, WD-40, grease guns and grease, etc.? When you're finished servicing a piece of equipment, you replace all of the tools to that carts and roll them back to the side wall next to the other tool carts. Think of it like the way a hospital stocks individual emergency rooms. When you go into an ER unit, there might be 10-50 patient rooms and each has most of the medical equipment to address most 80% of a patient's needs. If it's not found there, then they are wheeling you off to other parts of the hospital like radiology, ICU, surgery to attend to other needs. The same could be true for your mechanic shop. For less used tools, you could have a giant tool station with tools like welding equipment, pry bars, heat guns, tap and dye set, digital calipers, wire strippers, engine degreaser, brake cleaner, vehicle jack, telescoping mirror, etc. Keep the videos coming.

It drives me nuts when someone comes along and says can I borrow this for 5 minutes and then loses it. I have to go hunt it down which slows me down and I get behind on my work project. Why can't they be organized I don't know. Nutsy

So first of all great job! I a couple of ideas that might help as well. First of all get a couple of empty tool carts / tables and what you do is when you have a job in the shop you load your tools on it with your consumables and then take it over to the work site. This gives a central location to put your tools while working instead of scattered round the floor. When your done with the job you roll your little cart back to the tool area and put everything away and dump your trash. The second thing I have started to do is every time I have a job like change the oil or replace a water pump for example I write down every tool that ended up on my little cart and next time I can load all of the necessary tools / consumables and not a bunch of extra. ADD I know.

People might think this video was boring. You would be very surprised to find out how much money and time are wasted daily on issues like this. Let alone how much money companies spend yearly to research this issue for profitability purposes. It's a ligit topic. Even all the way down to restaurants, fast food, blue collar companies, factories, and delivery services. Great way to educate.
@summerrancher8044
@summerrancher8044 Жыл бұрын
Problem with putting the tool chest under the work bench is the dust. All the grinding dust ends up on/in the tool chest. That stuff gets everywhere. Also, pallet racking works well to create a work bench. You can move the height easily if you need to. Variable lengths, 8, 10, 12 ft. And you can add additional shelving above the work bench to have some vertical storage for stuff that doesn't get used often but once/twice a year. For a bench surface, you can use wood or buy a sheet of steel plate and lay it in there.

Farm shop organisation is something I could go on forever, inherited a shed that was only for very basic maintenance and turned it into a full fabrication/machine shop, You have some great tips iv also learnt the hard way, I'll add old power tools, they were expensive to buy but you'll never use them again, sell them or bin them, parts inventory, you'll find lots of misc parts from machines long ago sold, and cupboards as you 2 get older youll accumulate specially tools for jobs like pullers and measuring equipment, every specific tool is diferant and never stacks well cupboards with lots of shelves let's you stack lots of stuf in in a not very neat way then hide the mess, also keeps the dust off the sometimes very expensive tool then make a list of every tool in the cupboard and put it on the door, some of the tools you'll only use a few times a year so remembering exactly where it is is tricky, iv accumulated about 150 sets of specially tooling from giant snap ring pliers to fuel pump plunger depth setters to pressure gauge adapter sets, those types of tools are very hard to store nice

Cole, I suspect someone else has probably mentioned it, or you’ve already thought about it, but here I was wondering anyways. You’ve got a couple of large drums of fluids there, and then quite a few 5l? Jugs of what looks to be oil on the shelf down the side of your shop there. Have you thought about putting in a few of those stackable bulk liquid tanks like Chet Larson has done up at Larson Farms? Would stick out about as far as your mobile tanks, big enough to take a drum or two a piece since there’re multiple size options, and you can easily see how much is left. You’d also be likely to have less left in the bottom of the drums if you were clever about how you topped them up :) 18:12

With what you do in this shop, you should consider installing an exhaust fan for when you want6 to run vehicles and do other things with fumes so you can have a way to exhaust it out when it's cold out and don't want to open the doors. If you need to replace the lights anyhow, might as well install LED fixtures so you can save yourself some money on your electric bill. Have you ever thought about an overhead crane and track system that you could use for like if you need to lift an engine out of something or maybe have to lift a piece of farm equipment to work under it? One that can travel to length and width of the shop so you can lift heavy objects anyplace in the shop.

@@chrisallen2005 I know he has one of those. "it's probably the remains of an unwanted salesman" :D that hit hard for me. We had some religious folk (not our religion) who liked to make far too frequent visits despite always being politely told that we weren't interested. One day they parked down the road and snuck up the driveway and tried their sales pitch on my oldest brother, who was having a terrible day and halfway through trying to fix another breakdown. It was not a polite no they were given that day, and we didn't see them again for about 4 years :D

Where’s the battery bank for all your power drills? They could all be charging if there not air or plug. The place looks great. The bin issue, I’m so sorry this happened to you! Thank God that pipe didn’t hit someone when it fell off. Praying the whole thing gets fixed ASAP!!!

Having been one of those persons that organized our manufacturing facility and created the work stations, all is not peaches and cream. The work stations only work because they perform limited tasks where the tools for the job are defined. Parts are moved to additional control points where additional operations are performed and typically don't require all the tools that the previous work station did. Want to see chaos? Send a part to the next work station only to find that someone missed a step, and the tools to perform those operations aren't available there. It happens all the time. Too many companies jump into the 6-Sigma, Kaisen, and Just In Time inventory work flow BS. They only work when you perform the same operation numerous times a day not once or twice a week. In our case, work station tools meant that the mechanics were required to remove personal tools from the factory. While simpler to perform tool audits, there are always tools that a mechanic modified to perform that one job that he typically is the only person that performs. Take some of your electric companies energy assistance money and do the LED conversion. One caution is that the number of lumens required are going to be 50% more than they calculate. The cool white LED's lull you into a false sense that they area is bright, when a good hand held light meter will tell you a different story.

You need a workshop trolley to put a bunch of tools on and take to the spot in the workshop you need them

Get it all sorted, disposed of, and organized? It'll never be good enough. This kid is a brilliant obsessive tyrant. It seems his dad and brother are cool with him telling them what to do and when to do it. With his grasp of economics and agronomy he'll definitely succeed. But he'll always find more things to clean up, maybe on a bigger scale. He's a good, honest, hard working American.

Something I advocate for is more trash cans in strategic areas. A can at both ends of a bench... 1 by the man door, and 1 in the oposite corner. Then dumping cans once a week regardless if full. More cans means more stuff makes it into cand.
