Bulgarian here. You guys really have guts! Once I was biking with a friend and we wanted to get into Faculteta but the police stopped us at the entrance and said: If you enter here you will be walking back home (if you are lucky) . We were with bikes, know what I mean :)

Really enjoyed the video! As a Bulgarian, you need to have in mind, that every single one approached you with an attempt to take money from you and they were constantly talking between themselves how much money can they take from you. I think the reasons you were safe were the video camera, for one, they are very scared not to go on tape whilst doing something sketchy and second, you really cought them off guard. Considering nobody ever goes there, who is oustide their community. Also, having a buddy is also a good thing for these places.

Bulgarian here. As the others mentioned, Fakulteta is a truly exotic place to the Sofia non-Fakulteta (and non-gypsy) residents, so we all learn a lot from such documentaries. What I observed here, and am not surprised by is the attitude of the young people, who almost exclusively asked for money, without any substantial reason. Then contrast that with the a bit older couple (Ivo and "Chakai" :)), who had a store and had all rights to sell it to you but they gave you free (albeit warm) Pirinsko beers. There is this stark generational contrast, that is discouraging to me and signals for a generation that is sinking, it is disappointing. Georgie on the other hand spent time in England and took with him some westerner attitude and perspective - he spoke a very good English and was eager to talk and exercise the knowledge of the language, not bug you for money. I want all youngsters to be more like him, but if they are stuck in that place you see what direction it develops them towards. The video was a fun experience, but trust me, I was watching with a bit of anxiety as anything could happen in that "barrio"

I'm a foreigner living in Bulgaria since 2015, I'm coming from the American continent and Bulgaria is this, but also much more and there are tons of amazing places country wide to go visiting. Nature is jaw dropping, I'm a hiker, mt biker, skier and love to go deep into unknown corners - History and culture is everywhere, from Sofia to the roman ruins in Nessebar-Sozopol, great country to live.

One thing is worth mentioning: there are no ghettoes in Bulgaria in the sense that is used elsewhere. These used to be normal places to live but have been turned into ghettoes by the residents by building illegally and other activities typical for their lifestyle. In fact a lot of the apartment buildings used to be council housing or owned by state-run companies and provided to the employees for symbolic rent. No one is forced to live in these places it just turns that way when a lot of gypsies live together, they are not forced to do so it also makes the properties cheaper as everyone else runs. They are bad neighbourhoods no doubt, but they are not real ghettoes.

The Selos (Villages) are usually the more friendly areas. They're not as used to seeing tourists. I've been to many and the people stare a lot, but mostly out of curiosity, especially me being a blonde-hair, green-eyed American. Once they know you learned their language, so many doors open. They admire it. I've learned it. Also, Borat 2, his daughter speaks all Bulgarian. When I watched it my first time, I'm like....holy hell that's Bulgarian!
