DId something like that on Ambergris Cay in Belize years ago. I brought along a 5.5' spincast rod, a 404 Zebco with 10# line and a handful of lures. Locals said I wouldn't catch anything off their long docks, but I caught 2 barracuda, 2 small bonefish and a blue runner. The bonefish stripped the gears on the 404 Zebco 😆, but fun.

I have traveled to Costa Rica several times with poles. I take 2 piece rods and take them in a piece of PVC with caps on the ends with tape. They should have some mackerel there like in Costa Rica that look exactly like a Spanish mackerel in the Gulf but they can be 3' long. And jacks that look the same plus other species, and there ought to be a couple kinds of snook there. Oh and rooster fish, and snapper. I really miss fishin' in the Pacific on the beach and offshore. I think I paid an extra $40 to take my PVC tube with rods in it last February and I took 4 so it was definitely cheaper than getting rods there. Plus the quality of the stuff there is either terrible or crazy expensive. The name of jacks in Spanish is Jurel, it sounds like who-rel, if you're interested in learning Spanish names of the fish.

Been going to Puerto Vallarta for 25 yrs with wife an kids . There's a place called Nuevo bout 30 mins from airport. Kid friendly . We bought a time share there an you guys would love it. It has its own Marina small but cool.. There's a long jetty with sidewalk . Pargos seabass rooster snook it has a lot. Swim baits are a must or rapala s . The guy that owns paradise village has a recovery zoo that kids love. First time I went we were greeted by two ostriches lol. Kids love it as do adults . Used to ride my 67 Triumph Bonnie chopper down to Mexico when was stationed in San Diego. Ensenada was a great coastal town in the 70s. Skipped right past TJ LOL. Hope you and the fam have a blast down there.

Aloha. Granted I don’t take my rods everywhere, but I’ve taken them to Mexico, Louisiana, and Alaska. Two reels, tackle, pliers, and a knife in my bag, and tube for a couple rods(2 piece). Like using my own gear that I trust and have already paid for.

I recommend investing in a Hurricane Mako telescopic medium heavy rod, it’s under 2 feet long collapsed. It’s a good travel all around rod. The tip is sensitive enough for small fish as well.

There you go, running off to Mexico! So who do you have minding the store, and how long will you be there? When I lived in California, I use to sneak down to Baja every now and then. Cobo San Lucus is absolutely amazing fishing from the beach. Those Sierras do seem to get a little bit bigger than the Spanish Mackerel, and are pretty common in surf throughout the Sea Of Cortez. You can even catch Derrango ( Mahi- Mahia) off of the shore in some places! You will have a great time for shure.👍👍

Free line live bait, fish for red snapper at firts light or dusk and 2 hours in to low or high tide. Worked for me in Panama.

Why can’t you travel with a rod? Depending on how much you travel, you should get a 4 pc surf rod. My fly rods are 4 piece and I just carry the short rod tube on the plane. They don’t charge me for an extra carry on or anything. Just stuff it in the overhead and you’re good to go
