As someone from India who lives in US and traveled to UK, what I observed is that basic food in US is riddled with chemicals (dyes preservatives etc), and then you pay a massive premium if you want those chemicals off your food (organic, 100% fruit, 0% added sugar etc etc). Whereas in the UK, no one bullshits, by default the food just has less to no chemicals!
@jpa7714
@jpa7714 4 ай бұрын
Great observation! I'm from the US but have spent most of my life in the UK. Going back to America it definitely stood out to me how many items had artificial additives (bit more accurate than just saying chemicals) as a main ingredient. I was disappointed to try Gatorade for the first time, only to discover that it's literally just sugar water with artificial colours and flavours! Food in the UK has the opposite selling point, where packages often advertise having NO artificial colours, preservatives or flavours. Could just be a culture difference, but unfortunately I also think it comes down to EU food safety and quality regulations being much stricter than those in the US. Stuff like Gatorade probably wouldn't be legally considered "food" in Europe.

Americans can get so defensive if you point out that their food is terrible, weirdly processed, chemically, sugar-laden rubbish. Why else does everybody get fat and feel disgusting after only being in The States for a week or two? I always return feeling bloated and gross. When I return to the UK from Japan I feel light as a feather, despite having eaten like a gluttonous little piglet for 14 days. How'd ya figure that, y'know? I'm so glad you left this comment Arun, I totally back your observations and blunt final assessment.

Just go to Albertsons in the US. It's a very similar experience. Meats especially are really cheap in the thrift rack. It is an unfair comparison because you travelled 11 hours with the Lidel groceries, which does not even include the hours before and after the flight. Hence, some of the foods like brownies that has a short shelf life will not taste as fresh. So, I think the Erewhon store will easily win because you had it very fresh.

I used to own a drink company. They make new vendors pay over 30k to be in their stores. They also make their parking lots small on purpose with valet to make it seem like their store is always crowded. Sadly most of the people who shop here are making minimum wage or a bit more. It would be more interesting to compare the cheapest American supermarket to Erewhon. I think the difference will be really vast. Because in Europe the food quality is generally better than the US. UKs produce and dairy is generally better . Even meat items like sausages and cold cuts bought cheap in the UK taste much better than in a normal US store. Let alone bread ! If you shop at Dwaine Reades for example you know the quality is tasteless garbage .

Would have been great if you added ALDI to the list (that's our Lidl, literally the same company) Would have been cool to see how the food compared and price. Eredewon is criminally expensive but groceries in general are a little more in the US I think.

@@KingElrosTarMinyatur So compare Lidi in the U.S. to these other two stores, the point is still the same. But Aldi would make a lot more sense, since there's 30 times as many ALDI in the U.S, than there are Lidi, so Aldi would be more relevant to more people.

Some stuff is just more expensive because it’s more sustainable. The milk for an example is not factory farming an d also animal cruelty free. That’s why some organic raw products are higher in price.

@ramengurung9913 joking aside I literally cant have pasteurised milk because i will shit myself. The enzyme lactase is destroyed during pasteurization which helps digest the sugar lactose so people like myself can consume raw milk but not pasteurised. I also think it tastes much better but thats just my preference i guess 😁you may not taste a difference?

@@ramengurung9913 you clearly have no clue what you are talking about. When milk is heated some of the protein is destroyed and ALL B vitamins are partially destroyed, some only by 10-20%, other B vitamins up to 80-90%.
