I Trespassed To Mow This Tall Grass

This area has looked this bad for months, but it isn't entirely the fault of the contractors who have the contract. Can I mow it with the Ventrac after a night full of thunderstorms makes it a muddy, swampy, tall grass mowing mess?
Mowing tall wet grass in muddy or low lying areas can be very difficult, especially in a state like Florida where we have lots of water and not a lot of height to get rid of it.
This is a DOT (Department of Transportation) area right off an interstate merge/exit ramp. It is especially low lying due to this fact and has many areas that hold water and prevent standard machinery like zero turns or heavy tractors with bat wing mowers (which is what 95% of highway lawn maintenance is done with in my area) from being able to drive in let alone drive in and mow.
The Ventrac with dual wheel kit, kept in LOW gear, and with weight transfer on max putting the weight of the mower deck on the front wheels rather than the non-powered caster wheels mean I am able to work in conditions that the DOT contractors have had to ignore for probably months at this point.
I introduced myself to an employee of the company who had a contract to maintain 23 miles for I-10. He was impressed by the Ventrac and what it did, and a while later came back over to ask if I could pull him out, himself having got stuck in the terrible conditions. So naturally I helped him out, and then mowed the spots he couldn't get for him! I bet the boss (who was sitting in the truck) was wondering what in the world was going on!

The tires are basically air mattresses..that act like snowshoes and spread the weight of the machine over a much larger surface area when compared to other machines of its class. I knew this by looking at it..but there's nothing like seeing it demonstrated in such an astonishing way to drive the point home...:)

Oh my goodness, the opening shot. This is exactly one of the things people are struggling with. Too much water, overgrowth and they are supposed to be keeping up with maintenance. It is great to see a fairly big machine able to work and not get stuck or tear-up the ground inadvertently. When it is starting to grow bulrushes, you know it is getting soggy. I would imagine it also reduces mosquito and other types of insect residence. That worked out well, to be able to help the other mower and get where his machine couldn't go. EXCELLENT tests and experiments video. Good work done. To me, the Ventrac cut looks doable for mowing areas.

@@joshuaburba1048 i lived in st Petersburg, Clearwater, and Tampa Florida from 8 years old till I was 23 I know hot and humid too and trust me. I even mowed lawns too had about 20-25 a week made good money for a 14 year old. the late summer here gets just as bad here in July, August and September. I been living in South Dakota since 1993, thought when i got up here i would finally be away from iHumidity. Boy was i wrong. The dry winters here don't start feeling cold till it hit 20-25. if it gets colder i just stay inside, and watch my car rust before my eyes. 😒

I will continue to say this..."I am impressed by this ventrac and its capabilities and almost aquatic "ability" not to get bogged down like many other units out there in water/muddy terrain, but i hv a serious concern for the safety of the operator's feet dangling near that 2 parts that pivots. It looks like if your feet accidently slips in between the 2 parts it could seriouly squash your legs/feet. What if the cabin's foot rest/board was slighty longer or almost like a car's fire wall perhaps? What is your take on that Brad?

I will have to test that! I am not sure my feet are long enough to get pinched there, and if they are I am not sure which part would get pinched (toes? Mid foot? Ankle?) But I DO know when the seat was forward from my wife and I didn't put it back, I have smacked my knee pretty good during a turn, so I don't think something like what you are describing can be ruled out 100%. I will test and follow up, though!
