I think what they ultimately got right with this game is the fun factor. We can argue all day which game is more realistic, but for me what really matters is that this is the most fun I've had with a rally game since Dirt 2 back on the PS3. The sounds, cars, stages and different modes really make it a cut above the rest. Sim racers can always hop onto RBR, that game isn't going anywhere, but for people like me who enjoy some authentic rally racing that also feels great on a pad, there just hasn't really been anything quite like it.

i love the track design or its unevenness in this sim, in dirt rally 1 & 2 tracks always seemed way too clean, no ruts, no sudden changes. They dont feel like actual roads you get to drive in countryside. The only sim besides this one which managed to capture it, was rbr. Its hard to put into words, but in other sims except rbr, it feels like rally tracks are made to countryside rather than countryside made to rally track.

I love how the stages look in this - Dirt's stages always had a bit of a cut/paste feel to them, not helped by the fact so many of them were actually just reversed/shortened/slightly alternate versions of each other. This looks so much more like an actual road, both the scenery and even the road surface itself with the potholes and rocks and the parts where it just turns into tracks with grass growing through it. I do hope the damage modeling at least has the option for realistic damage, I found in the old Dirt games even on the hardcore mode you never really suffered literal stage ending damage until you'd had multiple really big crashes. The 'one crash and your rally is over' feeling is still something only RBR has really managed to do well.

It's interesting, it feels like anti-lag killed the turbo lag, but now the turbocharged Rally1 cars are getting something similar in the form of the hybrid boost! Unlike the WRC cars which didn't have either (the turbo lag or the hybrid boost). So I guess we could say the hybrid boost is the current equivalent of turbo lag, at least in terms of catching you by surprise (that is if it works just like in the game, when the boost is activated as soon as you reach a certain percentage of throttle input after it was recharged). Of course, the delay or the power difference aren't as big as with turbo lag in Group B cars, but if it really works like in the game, then drivers could perhaps be caught out by a higher amount of power under their gas pedal (I think Gus Greensmith had a crash last year when that caught him out in one corner, in Spain I believe). Or it may be just my drunk babbling, if so, then please ignore it :D Either way, thanks for making this video with my favorite Group B car. We had a Peugeot 309 for most of my childhood, it was the car in which my parents brought me home from hospital after I was born, and I fell in love with 80s Peugeots because of it (some of our neighbours also had 205s). I discovered this car in Gran Turismo 4 and loved it ever since! Can't wait to drive it in the game (but sadly, school has to be the priority now, as I'm graduating in the spring, so I guess I'm gonna wait until then). Just too bad I don't have a shifter to go with my wheel. But I'm sure it's gonna be a blast either way!

What i think ruins a bit the replay system is how the camera is fully locked onto the vehicle, it looks like a 2000's game just for that reason i think , because otherwise in the dashboard cam or when the camera is still in cinematic replays the game looks insanely good. The 205 T16 evo 2 could output 550 BHP but it was more like 400 to 450 BHP for the sake of not burning the enigne up. In those days the Rally events were marathons unlike todays more sprint like events. For the Safari the Cars were detuned and fitted with extra armored under trays and bash plates to take on the challenging enviroment. Group B was a mixed bag of cutting edge tech in the Engine and Turbo and some of the electronics mixed with thrown together 4WD drive systems with Braking systems not upto the job and single rate suspension that was still in the older Group 4 erea. Tyres were another tech that lacked it was not unknown that these cars stripped the treads off way before they completed the stages so managing tyres was very important over going flatout. The classic example being the 1985 Sanremo Rally which saw a huge battle between the then New Audi Quattro S1 Evo 2 winged monster Piloted by Driving legend Walter Röhrl and the all winning 205 T16 Evo 1 Röhl gave a master class in fast driving on that multi day event setting a pace so high that the 205 T16's stripped their tyres bare. Röhrl also said if you had time to think driving a Group B car you would be dead there was no time to think. It is hard for those who did not grow up during the 70's and first half of the 80's just what a challeng Rallying was multi day events lasting upto five days .with stages spaning day and nights .with very limited rest times no central services.this was fine with the Group 4 mostly 2 WD cars with upto 275 bhp . But it quickly became dangerous when Group B arrived from 1983 forwards . It was then only a matter of time before something major happened. These cars changed the landscape of Rallying forever . I miss the old marathon events like the Lombard RAC were I got to see my first live rallycars it was a challenge trying to get from one stage to another just to glims a rally car for a few seconds on a stage .being over taken by full blown rally cars while trying to make the next stage underways or having your local Petrol Station been taken over by the works Audi team or Lancia to do between stag service's if only Smart phones had been around then. All is such a long time ago now and they have become myths just like the Silver Arrows were back in the late 30's for GP racing .

9:15-9:19 convinced me. There you can see, how the topology of the surface really is there. You can see, how the car wants to drift sideways, but it is thrown into another direction by drifting through the hill. That could become very interesting for driving. Now you can't just drift around every corner and drive as you usually do, like on almost flat surfaces in the past with maybe a few simulated few bumps that don't affect you and a lot of optics only. Now, you really have to learn how to work WITH the terrain, instead of against it. By looking, by waiting for those bumps and troughs, and steering, using them in a right way, to transfer your weight, so that you can control the direction of your car. Or at 9:27: The pothole is mean! And really well done in terms how it bangs, and really slows you down. PS: I specifically analyzed frame for frame. You really can see, how the car falls into the hole, but the speed is still the same. Then it travels the distance in the hole, and then it hits the other side. Ok, the speed is reduced from 50 to 33 in 1 frame, but you can definitely see the stark slowdown effect.

It needs the “bobble head” movement you get for onboards in GT7. It looks so odd being in a rally car, and the drivers point of view doesn’t move with the bumps on the road surface etc.

If you want to properly do a hand brake turn irl with awd you push the clutch in and pull the hand brake. I’m not sure how the modern ones work but that’s what you have to do for older normal cars.
@AmbientMike
@AmbientMike 11 ай бұрын
Older group B didn't have a handbrake to disconnect the differential actually so IRL you wouldn't use it as you do with a modern car.

game does still have a bit of that dirt rally 2 phantom force, where it feels like the car has sort of unnatural trajectories when swinging over a bump once the speed picks up.

All I got is a gamepad but I think I might enjoy this one. Wondering if it will have any multiplayer full rally events like you've done in RBR? I think it's super cool how those events change how ppl drive to preserve the car through an entire event with really high stakes if a crash happens.

Serious question here; Jimmer is an Englander. He drives right-hand drive cars every day with the shifter on his left - yet his sim rig has the shifter on his right. Why is this?
@smallbutdeadly931

Some of his racecars he drives are left-hand drive and so him practicing in the rig with it like that does help. Plus, it is possible to be used to both.

I'm British and I do the same when gaming TBH, never really thought about it - good question! I think the majority of my time for the last few years has been vintage Italian and American cars in Asset to Corsa so they've made sense but that's not really an answer!

@@dodge33cymru I am sure we have all wondered how we would do at Top Gear’s Dunsfold track, and when I do think about this I wonder how much the left-hand shifter would affect my times. I have a feeling it would be just strange enough to cause real concern for me.
