There's certainly a need to value your supplies through the whole chain. Finding companies who specialize in the supplies makes it more likely that there will be a broader range of products (color ranges, textural differences, etc.) and allows the companies to support employees who are specialized in curating those supplies not to mention ethically supplying them. Cheaper is just cheaper and that's basically it. It's not surprising that Amazon could replicate some of the quality of the actual product but there are shortcuts behind the scenes to make that happen.
@multimanjazzman82034 жыл бұрын
One thing with companies like Amazon, they make cheaper knock-offs with okay quality because they already have the capital to produce, theyre just doing it to battle companies or brands that specializes on that specific product. Cuz theyre cheaper, consumers would go buy them and through time, sales and demand for other brands will go downhill and here comes Amazon to “rescue” them by buyin* their brand. Amazon has the upper hand since they’re Amazon.
@debleb1664 жыл бұрын
@@multimanjazzman8203 With art supplies though I doubt everyone will just abandon ship with the brands they like and go to Amazon's. Different people like different qualities in different brands and Caran D'ache, Prismacolor and Derwent pencils will likely always be better than whatever Amazon puts out.
@yuzu-tsuyu4 жыл бұрын
Having people very close to me who worked for amazon for a lengthy period of time, they spoke of this extensively... literally all the amazon products (not always named amazon basics) are 100% sourced from pre-existing supply chains. They may direct them to cut costs (use a cheaper pigment option, cheaper wood, poly blend instead of cotton, etc.) but otherwise it is often made in the exact same factory/a factory owned by the same people, with the exact same materials/same material supply chain, before being packaged differently. So yes, the problem with this is what you pointed out... basically a cannibalization of every possible industry in order to control the supply. It costs money to hire product developers, packaging designers, product testing, etc. and they pass the savings that came from ripping off the design/formulation of a company's final product on to... well a little to you (just enough to get you to buy it, and not a penny more) but the rest to bezos. I'd pass on these--if for no other reason than feeling like part of my soul was dying having to look at 'amazon' on an art supply while I was using it... There is also the very legitimate fear that as he crushes existing companies and narrows down your options, that product innovation dies and they can then degrade the quality of the products they're offering once you're stuck with no other options. Which is scary and... gives me that uncomfortable feeling you mentioned... :')

Pertaining to Alexis’ comment:: I had no idea this was going on. I guess I haven’t bought anything with the Amazon logo on it. I certainly have, however, bought things with the Great Value Wal Mart logo. Specifically, groceries. I had heard that these products are often produced in the same factories as the name brand product, thereby making it a more economical choice, while getting the same quality. In fact, you often see the products side by side on the shelf. I had no idea that the ultimate goal was to squeeze out the competition. But it makes sense. Perhaps I will think twice now, as my budget allows. Thank you to both of you for the insight.
@yuzu-tsuyu3 жыл бұрын
@@People_R_Foolish LOL I had no idea someone was trying to troll, I'm sad youtube didn't let me know. Nobody was claiming to even be an artist dude, you're projecting a little too hard. It's okay if you're nothing in "the big picture", even if your art sucks, it's about what makes you happy (though I question if trying to leave mean comments is really making you happy.) In the unlikely event that someone is sincerely concerned about my "sources" (even though this is readily information available online and literal factory workers probably know this best of all), direct family member who was a level 7 and had meetings with our bald overlord himself regularly, and another direct family member who did factory compliance checks overseas. This is really hard because factory owners will go to great lengths to hide horrible conditions and make everything look above board, even if the goods are actually being produced at another location entirely. But regardless, internally Amazon is *proud* of this sort of thing. People working there either drink the koolaid or pretend to, but either way they think of cannibalizing other companies as an accomplishment.

Amazon did their version of the cult classic dill mustard sauce sold by the Larrupin Grill in Humboldt County, CA. That's one of the few fine dining restaurants in the county, and salmon is a big thing in the Pacific Northwest, so the restaurant owners adapted an old family recipe for Swedish dill mustard sauce to serve with their salmon. People wanted to buy the sauce, so they started bottling it, and you could get it on sandwiches, bagels, etc. as a regional specialty. WinCo is a regional employee-owned grocery store and I used to get it for $4 for a 10-oz jar. The restaurant, or their sauce bottler, also sold it online... for $13/jar. I guess enough people searched online for "Larrupin dill mustard sauce" that Amazon decided it was worth stealing the recipe or buying them out. For a while, you couldn't get Larrupin Sauce (it was IN THE NEWS up there!) and the family gave some kind of vague excuse about supply issues or something. Now I wonder if this was connected to the sudden appearance of Amazon Happy Belly Dill Mustard Sauce (for about $9/jar, same size/shape as the OG stuff)?

It's called business. A lot of companies do this, not just amazon. It sucks, but for people who can't afford to pay an extra $20 it's not bad to have. She's just doing her job in showing the difference. If people can, or are willing to spend the extra $20 they can. This goes for any amazon basic, or knock off items. If it comes between buying food or buying "name brand" I think I would choose buying food and just buy the cheaper item if the difference in the item isn't that big of a deal. I see so many name brand items that get so expensive because of their name, not their products.
@YourMajesty1433 жыл бұрын
@@fidelianerina - That's not "business" anymore than breaking the leg of your skating competitor before the race is "sports". This isn't capitalism either, it's corporatism. Learn the difference. Business is meant to allow for competition. Monopolies are not competition, they're just "Corporate Raiders". They don't look to actually compete via innovation and quality, their job is to buy up the competition until their shitty company is the only one left standing. Usually that means losing alot of money first, in order to gain future consumers in the long-term. Gaming the market used to be illegal. There were anti-trust & anti-merger laws that prevented it. These laws were meant to protect small businesses & entrepreneurs from big conglomerates that had the capital to overtake them. But by the power of bribery and the Supreme Court ruling of "Citizens United", corporations had power over our legislation and could now dictate the rules & bend the laws to suit them. Jeff Besos & Bill Gates have tried to buy elections plenty of times. This is a threat to our democracy, and you're sitting there justifying this. They weakened anti-trust laws, then they slowly eradicated corporate & banking regulations. These mergers made these companies so big that in 2008, it led to a market collapse and one of the biggest recessions we've ever had since the Great Depression. It's sad that the current state of corporatism is being viewed by the public as "business as usual". It was never like this. Billionaires & huge monopolies are a very new thing to our society, bc we used to put ethics over dollars. Not anymore.

@@sallykitchen9378 , If Prismacolor would go back to the quality they had when I bought my first complete set (made in USA) I would still support them. Every replacement pencil from them has been sheer hell to work with since they started manufacturing in Mexico, I refuse to buy their pencils anymore due to the breakage, warped pencils and loose leads.

Geez that's awful! I would only buy from the real company's however I have friends who can't afford art supply's, I think I'd only buy Amazon ones if I don't have any money for real art supplies and that's about it

I was thinking, there is no way I would recommend Amazon Basics, rather than Prismacolor. Firstly, it would put me off that Amazon crushes small companies out of greed and spite. I think he did the same with an art supply business. Creating art shouldn't be done with something so evil. Yup, you heard me. I used the E word. Secondly, the downside you mentioned over the pigmentation would seriously ruin any artwork. I wouldn't recommend a person starting out, or even doing art as a hobby, use inferior quality tools. Save up and buy the quality tools. I believe there is only a $20 difference, so get the artist quality. Thirdly, Amazon will start out providing a reasonable quality knock-off, but I bet the quality will subtly go down to increase their profit margins. My final point is you are making a profit from recommending Amazon...

This is a blessing for me. I just found you today and I’m binging. Love you, your cute, funny and honest. Do you ever raffle off art supplies you’ve tested but don’t want to keep? I’m disabled and can no longer work so art supplies are no longer something I can splurge on.

9:11, Yeah, but a thin barrel uses less wood so it's more eco-friendly -Wait actually not really cause then they'll break and you'll have to buy more, using more wood than a slightly thicker barrel would.
