There is a brand in Brazil that sells "tempera gouache", which is THE paint that everyone uses in school, cause it's super cheap and non-toxic, and can be washed off of clothes (to an extent, at least), so it's ok if the kids mess around with it. The problem is that my teachers and everyone else at school always called it simply "gouache". So for my entire life until very recently, I thought those were gouache paints and when I saw people working with gouache and saw their amazing results I was like "what kind of wizardry is that??" So yeah. Guess I'm not a fan of tempera paints either. I just didn't know it until this very year lol

Same. Until I went to art school I didn't believe Disney painted their acrylic cells with gouache because tempera could never do that! Then I started to hear gouache is super expensive and got even more confused. Once I learned tempera is gouche for little kids and very different from actual gouache, everything clicked.

Pro tip- Use a bowl for your paint water. -You won't mistake it for your tea -It is harder tip over -If a brush is soaking in it then it won't mush up the bristles as much - It is a good use for bowls that are too nice to eat out of - You usually don't need to refresh the water as much - It fits larger tools such as sponges, cotton gauze and painters brushes - If you use pyrex, clay, or stoneware then it will be less likely to shatter all over the floor when you drop it When I see a drinking glass or a sauce jar full of paint water I think that it is silly and kinda unprofessional (not meant in the shade way). The water bowl is part of your necessary work space so you should have a dedicated tool for the job. It would be like using a dinner plate or a plastic fruit punnet for your palette. Dedicate something for the process if you are a painter. At the very least have a plate for painting that isn't the same as your dinner plates.
@Kehy_ThisNameWasAlreadyTaken
@Kehy_ThisNameWasAlreadyTaken Жыл бұрын
Ahh, you would be disgruntled by my method If I'm painting, 99% of the time it's a minifigure, so I just use a shotglass. I also use salad plates and small bowls as palettes sometimes due to how easily they clean. Mind, I'm also the sort that uses construction grade magnetic trays to hold sewing pins, fish keeping supplies to grow plants, and I'm also using some dishware and dinosaurs to decorate fish tanks as well. Art and office supplies were clearly always intended for use in sewing, and some ordinary home gardening tools work fabulous in a commercial construction setting. If you aren't blending your realms of knowledge and supplies, what ARE you doing? No hate though, I simply cannot and will not separate these things more sharply. Doing so would restrict the creative possibilities, in both what can be done and how to do it. My creative process was and is never meant for someone else, so 'professionalism' only applies if it would have a physical effect (i.e. quality of outcome). Given that rarely such applies, let Chaos reign undivided.

I love you to the moon and back Rae, but this is misinformation about Cadmium. Also it's cadMium, not cadium. According to numerous (reliable) sources the level of soluable cadmium in the pigments used in art supplies is not enough to be remotely toxic. I stress the word Art Supplies there because the levels of cadmium used in other products can be toxic. Tests by the European Union on art supplies and the testing done by art supply manufacturers such as Winsor and Newton concluded that the levels of cadmium contained in the products is not enough to cause any harm even if ingested or used for long periods of time. The cadmium pigment in most art supplies like paints isn't even soluble through your skin. Breathing in or using the paints (again, I stress art supplies here) is not toxic at all, even with everyday use. If the levels of cadmium were at all high enough to put users at risk, a CL label (caution label) is mandated to be applied or included on all packaging. If the product you are using has a label on the packaging that says AP certified or CP, it has been thoroughly tested and approved to be completely safe and non toxic. Hope this clears up the confusion. There is also much more information on this on the Winsor and Newton website as well as Green America site. TLDR: Cadmium is toxic, BUT the cadmium in art supplies that have the proper CL, or AP certified labels are completely harmless and safe. Also the tests have been done by independent labs and not just the art supply manufacturers themselves for quality control. There are many unions around the world that regulate art supplies and test for hard metals and toxic chemicals and the best way to know if what you have is safe is by looking for the AP or CL labels on your supplies. Happy painting and creating! :) EDIT: Not trying to be a know-it-all. I just wanted to save others who see this from a mass trash of their art supplies which we know are damn expensive. And most of us artists, well... we poor! :)

I have a question about labels then? not technically cadmium, but I have some watercolor paints (Prismacolor Premier Tubed Watercolors) that have a warning on them? They say they have cancer-causing agents in them (specifically one of my greens and my cerulean blue), but does that mean they are not safe to use? I just want to be safe with my artwork and stuff. @@graceyates1836 They are legally mandated to state whether the pigments used in the paints are potentially toxic, such as your cerulean blue as it would most likely contain cobalt. Some of my paints also say this and they have these pigments in them. As long as you work in a ventilated space and don't ingest anything you should be fine as the quantities are low in the paints. Especially with watercolors as you don't use any solvents to thin the paints such as with oil painting, which could release more harmful fumes than mixing acrylics or watercolors with water.

I had to look up tempera paint to find out more about it. Apparently, the stuff called "tempera" in the U.S. is *not* the same stuff used back in the early Fine Art period (pre-1500s) called "egg tempera" which was made from, among other things, egg yolk as a binding agent. It was remarkably resilient over time as evidenced by the amount of surviving artwork from the period which still exists today. Modern tempera paint is more correctly called "poster paint"; and in my opinion, the word "tempera" was borrowed in the U.S. from the classical stuff because of the resemblance to the word "temporary", which implies it is for exactly that: temporary artwork done on windows and other washable mediums, such as on windows of businesses like stores and restaurants, or on car windows, et cetera. I remember working with tempera poster paint back in grade school, and you're right; it is very difficult to get it to look good without streaking or laying it on super-thick to the point where it becomes opaque rather than translucent. It's good for making simple, temporary illustrations and lettering on glass or plastic, but that's about it.

You do still get tempera but the likes of sennelier egg tempera has oil added as well. I guess they have to add extra things in it to make it last in a tube. When I have used it in the past I just made tiny amounts that I could use in hours or a day at most and just used yolk and water but I believe you can use a tiny amount of vinegar or use wine to slow it spoiling if you don’t have distilled water or want to keep your paint for a few days in the fridge. Some people also use alcohol or the like as a wetting agent but since I mainly just used earth pigments I didn’t need this. I think the tempera that she was talking about is usually called poster paint here.

I refuse to use glitter in general as I can't get it off of my clothes, my work space, my carpet or my cat. Another one I can't handle is the Art 101 colored pencils, their color-lay is atrocious. The Art 101 Oil Pastels are great. But, you're totally right about Tempra, everytime I've ever used it, it flakes everywhere.

@knp01

Until you mix it with white and cad red gives coral while fake cad gives pink. Cad red is true neutral red without warm or cool undertone and this property is why it’s so valued. It can’t be mixed with multiple pigments at such high chroma as the real deal. And fake cad is just a mix of red pigments which can be problematic with colour mixes.

I can see the difference easily. I would consider using cadmium free paints if they were considerably less expensive, which would give me a reason to use them but, they cost the same. I wear latex free gloves when I paint and don’t eat or drink while doing any artwork...that’s for breaks. I have been using cadmium paints since 1972 and I am still alive. The color of cadmium paints is much better to my eye. Just use good safety sense when using them.

I love the cheap sketchbooks for experimentation and no-stress gesture and figure drawings. So long as the paper takes regular graphite pencil I'm set. I can get all my gesture gains out of the way and save the nicer stuff for my expensive sketchbooks and loose-leaf paper.
