Erik Paulson is an absolute legendary Master of all grappling arts. Thanks for being his “meat puppet” for demonstration purposes…better you than me…everything he does, from any position flows directly into another attack. It’s such an honor to get to train with such experts

"Knee bar, inverted knee bar, toe holds inward/outward, hip lock, step-over-toe face lock, achilles lock, twist lock, heel hook inward/outward ... that's pretty much it" Reminded me of that time Bubba recited to Forrest Gump the one million different ways you could prepare shrimp, and then ends it with "thats... that's about it"

Two salient observations that immediately stood out: 1. Perhaps more impressive than Paulson's ability to turn a person into a human pretzel is the utter ease with which he just about glides around and over your body while flowing from one position to another. 2. You are a very, very brave person to keep asking questions after the demonstration. 😁

So many techniques... why we almost never see something like this in mma? Either one has to be narrowly specialized in only this field, or they are all bunch of ignorants or extremely good in defending these kind of attacks... or as the great Sifu Gary Lam used to say "when you are tired, hurt, and in fear... you forget all your techniques (forms, katas)"...
@johndough811510 күн бұрын
Mastery in drills, and Light sparring... is very different from Full Mastery at full Speed, Heavy Power, and High Stress levels. Its a long process... and the simple fact is... that most fighters never fully mastered Any of what they learned... at A Functional Combat level. When I was first sparring with Wing Chun... I was making a lot of mistakes... as well as losing proper Form, due to Stress and Fear. Eventually, I could maintain form much better... and was better at dealing with fear... but I was still often making certain mistakes, being off with timings, not reading the OP well, etc. But over the course of hundreds of heavy contact sparring matches... against many different Artforms, and against fighters far outside of my own Mass/Strength class... I eventually realized my mistakes, as well as Cleaned up my form, to Repeatable / Reliable Perfection. Of course, to reach that level... I was training anywhere from 4 to +8hrs per day, 365 days a year, for a solid 5yrs, at max intensity levels... before I started to ease up. When you reach Masterclass level output... you no longer need to train as long/hard... as you only have to Maintain what you have already developed + perfected. I called it: "Keeping the Tools Sharp". As far as Forms goes... In Wing Chun, Tai Chi, and many others... Most of the forms movements are just to maintain a historical record of the arts Concepts / Examples. The rest of the Form, is designed to develop special Attributes. Such as Tai Chi's Slow-Motion movements... which are designed to building "Super Tendons" (far superior tendon and tissue strength). There are many other benefits too... but it would fill several pages worth of text, to fully explain them all. Anyway... Your Trained Martial Responses, are generally gotten from various Hand-Drills... like Tai Chi's "Push Hand Drills", or Wing Chun's "Chi-Sao Drills". There are also often other instructionals, and specialized drills. For example... Tai Chi also has an entire Standing Grappling set, basically called "Chi-Na" (Chee Nahh). Weapons also have their own forms, combat drills, and "attribute" training methods (attributes, like being able to stab/slice faster, more powerfully, and to be able to move a heavy blade... with enough strength and accuracy... without any fatigue / issues). But as said... Its all down to Mastery. Finally... In this video.. you see the Grappler in a situation, where he is not actually being Challenged. That of course, makes it easy to get off whatever lock he desires. Also, his methodology is likely based on Sport Rules. There were many positions, for example... where his head, or Groin, could have been attacked, while trying to get his locks. Since sport rules prevent hits/kicks to the Groin, pokes to the eyes ...etc.. that also makes things a bit easier. This is not to say, that he lacks good skills. Nor that what he teaches, is invalid. Its very possible that he could get such locks off, under UFC fight rules... and even in a real street fight. There are Many variables at play. But at least, if he had fully mastered these things...he is far more likely to be able to get them off... than not.
@RAPEDBYBLACKS10 күн бұрын
There are not as many situations where this may happen in MMA. You see many of these in no gi grappling
