Before I tried freedom unite , the oldest MH I have played so far was Generations ultimate. Playing generations ultiamte was a bit unfair "experience" wise because I was getting carried throught out the story - here in freedom unite - I decided to go solo to experience the old world.

What made the past games "Feel" better is the sense that I was actually a Hunter whose job it was to hunt monsters for the village. I wasn't some hero, wasn't part of a huge army, I was just some guy doing his job. I have to plan out my hunts, make sure that I prepared everything, made lists of things I needed to gather along the way, payed attention to monster behaviors and if I ever failed a quest it was because I was under prepared. The newer games are fun but the heavy focus on combat takes away from the rest of what the game has to offer. I enjoyed playing worldborne and rise is great but they aren't really favorites

Agree. The game is reaching more and more gamers and that is the problem. The new MH games was done to reach quantity (more money to the company), no quality as it was; and they know that. Pd: more combat skills, super hero movements, better graphics etc is not quality

@@abelortiz8093 It's a double edged blade. Capcom can't keep using old gaming engine or they would fall behind or will definetly hit a wall where they cannot improve on the old formula. The shift towards more fast paced combat can be great if they designed the monsters like that too. The hunter in newer titles has more advantage against the monster when in earlier titles, it was the other way around (most of the time).

The reason why this game in particular feels so nostalgic to me, is because I literally spent dozen of hours with my friends in ad-hoc online play, after school sitting next to each other with our PSP in hand, just playing Freedom 2, the immediate predecessor to Unite. Unite had this neat feature where you could take your Freedom 2 savegame and just continue playing wherever you left off in Freedom 2. It just added its story continuation and new monsters, new weapons and armor. However, truth be told, this game has aged very poorly. In comparison to the succeeding games Tri, 4 and Generation or even the newer Monster Hunter games, it is beyond clunky. The visuals even back then were nothing more than meh at best, but Monster Hunter never been about the graphics. I probably wouldn't want to come back to it, maybe just for a few hunts and see some of the monsters you don't get to see in any other iterations of the franchise, but that being said, this will always remain my favorite Monster Hunter game.

monster in the old gens are definitely slower and more predictable. I think the perceived difficulty mainly comes from the DPS limit of the hunter making the quests sometimes a competition of endurance, and the add-on challenge for melee classes to squeeze out the last bits of damage openings by figure out the extreme of hitboxes and positioning.
@xShadeThePyromaniac
@xShadeThePyromaniac 2 жыл бұрын
Not quite... While hitboxes are definitely a factor, Old Gen MH was *A LOT* more Punishing than the modern games... I'm talking Rathalos Backhop Fireball doing 99% type shit. What made the old games difficult is that while the Monsters were relatively predictable, they did far more damage than any modern game. If you were playing Melee Especially, This forced you to learn individual weaknesses for each monster and each of thier attacks. And even when you did know, you would have to EXECUTE on that knowledge... Because if you didn't, come G Rank fights would literally be impossible to clear. The fact that I can clear A monster I've never seen before cartless in newer games does in the opinion of myself and many others heavily decrease difficulty... I won't deny that older Monster Hunter games had much Heavier and Much Clunkier controls. But the game appeared to be balanced from the outset around the tools you and your weapon might have. Monster Knowledge and Preparation was key to clearing ANY Hunt, they aren't afterthoughts. Gathering and Farming was Emphasized as ot was the primary way to get materials and upgrades. These games truly were a breath of fresh air to most action games at the time. And that's the main reason they are remembered so fondly. Punishing but everything that was seemingly Unfair could be learned. That was the philosophy of the older Games. And while knowledge was important Execution was just as if not more so

Here's a long one from a vet: Played all of the monhuns since the first freedom, skipping only Gen on switch. Even played portable 3rd, the japan-exclusive portable title. I love all of them in their own ways, but I do have to agree with the "older is harder" crowd. The biggest factors for me were seemingly lower drop rates on rare mats; having to properly prepare between hunts; finite whetstone, and needing to maintain paintball throughout hunt (if you don't have certain skills); QoL movement options; hyper-aggressive small mons; inconsistent hit boxes (Plesioth's hips for example) and crazy scaling on monster damage. Further, late game monsters like White Fatalis, Akantor, Ukanlos and the like were absolute one-shot machines unless you were completely kitted in endgame armor and knew how to fight them nearly perfectly. I haven't found another hunt in any of the subsequent games to give me the same challenge as these boys. That said, I think Capcom went in the right direction with removing things like paintballs and finite whetstones. What I don't agree with is being able to fast travel to camp and completely restock/re-kit mid-quest. When before you had to consider the strengths and weaknesses of every monster in the quest, and equip/ prepare items accordingly, now you can just cheese your gear. There is no longer a sense of hesitation or caution going into a tough mission, since you can change absolutely everything on the fly. I used to craft a wide variety of viable gear for the occasion of being stuck in an awkward multi-monster hunt. Now I don't even have to think about it much. It's better suited to my adult life/adult free time, but not as thought-evoking. Wirebugs are really fun, so I won't complain about them. The mobility is very freeing, making moving in and out of combat fast and easy. Monster riding on the other hand, while very cool looking, deals way too much damage and stagger (especially early game, when your gear still sucks). Wyvern-on-wyvern can drastically change the course of the fight. The spectacle of turf wars is amazing, but the automatic burst of hundreds of damage, broken limbs, a dozen loose free crafting materials, and multiple knockdowns kind of rub me the wrong way. Super helpful for the hunter, but I feel like the hunt is kind of robbed from me to a degree. In Freedom, if two monsters were in the same zone I'd be terrified of getting flattened and have to dungbomb one away. In Rise, two monsters are in my area and I breathe a sigh of relief? Meh. Kind of betrays the gravity of staring down two massive beasts. Not saying it isn't enjoyable, it just doesn't help new Monhun in the 'difficulty' arena. Let's take a look at a fair quest comparison with Four Horns. This is a high-rank quest thats been in just about every iteration of monster hunter since 1, and it's always a required quest to get to your urgent. Old: Unscaled guild quests, limited paintballs/whetstones, no restocking mid-quest, tiny zones with little to no escape routes, no turf wars (both simply aggro you if they're in the same zone), the same type of middling, high-rank gear as you'd have in basically each of the games. This used to be a nightmare-fuel quest if you don't have three friends with you. Online matchmaking didn't exist (without a third-party convoluted method we won't talk about here) so if you didn't have the IRL friends, you're doing it yourself. Let's look at Rise: Quartet of Horns; Virtually unlimited resources through camp restocking, constant monster tracking althroughout the quest, monsters scale down in health and damage if you're solo or you can easily hop online and play with randos, the same type of high rank middling gear you'd have by this point in any of the games, wirebug mobility, wide-open spaces with plenty of ways to dart out of combat and climb to safety, Diablos vs Diablos combat dealing hundreds of damage for you and taking one out of the fight, wyvern riding for more damage to each of them, small mobs barely touch you. --------------- The argument above outlines why the newer games are definitively, mechanically easier and more approachable. I do not mean they're inferior, in fact they're far superior in almost every way. What we need to realize as a community is hardship doesn't make for a more enjoyable experience. New Monhun is still plenty challenging to new hunters, and its still plenty fun to play. Hard != good. Monhun is good because of the addictive gameplay loop, not because of the high degree of difficulty. My biggest and really only true gripe is the camp restocking cheapening the 'prepared hunter' vibe.

This is a pretty good take. I will say however: there is a common misconception regarding scaling. Monster health does indeed scale to player number, but the damage doesn't. Monsters will oneshot you if they can whether you're in a group or by yourself. Doesn't invalidate your points at all though, very well articulated.
@TyrsFire
@TyrsFire 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah i don't like the restock as well , i mean you have big areas With tons of resources, a big inventory with separate bags for different items ( no longer your 24 slots for EVERYTHING) faster gathering animations (you can pick items while runing!!!), auto craft stuff, simplified crafting (less materials required and no longer % for succed or fail to craft) and all this IMO its cool but its a waste cuz you can just go to a camp and thats it. I still play like old games btw and it solves that easily and its just fantastic that feeling and the need to know the map not for fighting or finding monsters routes but for gathering materials when i'm in trouble. Its fun like old games, the only thing i don't like and i won't ,it's clutch claw, tenderize even the mantles are broken, also now you can get almost all buffs and armor abilities with 100% crit and a lot of dmg and its easy to get and no penalties for getting those abilities. No more strategy and sacrifice in building.

I agree. Re-stocking for me makes sense but not fully. Should be a finite amount and gear alternatives limited the same. It just makes sense in my mind especially if I think that the world is advancing. MHFU was my first game and I don't miss the tedious bits one bit. Only played MHGU now as a proxy to the old games as I wanted to validate myself. I only really understood how MH worked when I played World and Rise. To people saying Rise is much easier, probably to some degree, but going back now to the old game setup, I realized that it took me the same amount of time to end low rank quests. I just didn't realize it before. Also the if you forgot to eat you need to abandon quest means nothing to me. If I died or forgot to eat, I turn off the game and try again. That way I don't waste resources. It maybe an extra step from Rise but it's all the same to me at least. In both cases there is no actual penalty. No lost of materials or money.

wirebug wouldve been more acceptable for me if the monsters also got huge update on how they deal with the hunters. back on old gens FU for example, if you make wrong decisions you get punished for it, like if you get greedy and then the monster slaps you into a corner, it gives me that feeling of "oh sht i fcked up big time" and then i panicked like something how it would feel like when you get cornered by a beast in real life. now every area in rise is so wide you hardly get cornered and even if you do you just slide away with the wirebug. hunters also got a loooot of air movements this time and the monsters dont really have anyway of dealing with it. example is cheesing with helmbreaker. returning monsters did even had a huge update to their movesets so upon facing it even at first time you already know how it would move. also, just like you said wyvern riding is just loads of free damage. its fun, yes but that adds another layer of unfairness for the monsters together with the new wirebug mechanics. i dont have problems with turf wars because it adds immersion to the game, its just that in rise areas are just too damn wide you dont get mixed up in the fight and you just sit back and watch them do damage to each other 😅. in short, if they plan want to give the hunters more freedom, more cool looking moves and mechanics, im all for it yknow but give the monsters something too because its a monster hunter game. you go and hunt "dangerous" monsters and there should be some real danger to it otherwise the game would just become like a generic hack and slash game.

As for the rest (gathering, farming, combining, item consuming) just use the one that were introduced and used since mh1. Each hunt seems daunting, i bring all i could carry, LBBs, SBB, all sorts of coatings, traps, even bring mats for crafting spares. I climbed the ranks as bow main. Hunts sometimes last near the time limit. I again reached a bottleneck, Akantor. Cant kill it within time limit using bows. It forced me to learn hammer just to get pass Akantor. I crafted a higher tier bow then hunted Akantor with it. My regret is that my memory card got corrupted by the time i unlocked Ukanlos. Ukanlos and 1-horned devil Diablos are my Eleanors.

Older games can be taken with a more "turned-based" approach, once you figure that out I think the MHW has more difficulty in actual combat, but it's everything else that make the game more forgiving. Mantles, ease of gather, ability to restock items at will, having perma food buffs every hunt, going in full prepare every time with little prep. In Freedom Unite/4 Ultimate I had to spend two or three Paw Pass quests just to get enough resources to craft enough potions and ammo, which were finite for that hunt. And if you fail, you had to take the time to prep once again. That kinda tension made my first time successful hunts more memorable.
@kurosan0079
@kurosan0079 2 жыл бұрын
That type of difficulty is sorely missing from the new games. You can throw me all the insane combo, one-shot, and AOE attacks and I'd still think the old games are more difficult, simply because it's more multi-faceted. It's not just about the fight, it's also everything that comes within and without it. The prep, the item management, the resource limitations, how the food buffs used to work, how the skills used to work, even the the map are all challenges on their own. It was amazing. Nowadays, where the challenge is concentrated in the fights, while everything else is pretty much handed to you. It's fun, for sure. Way more fun than the old combat system. But it's just not the type of challenge that made the old games great.

@@kurosan0079 I think i get where your coming from on this. things that some find tedious have been removed and the fights individually have become the focus. the thing is, if you loved what others find tedious then it's just not the same for you. it's an overall difference in design and rhythm to truly prepare for a hunt back then than it is now. Im definately an MHWer, a Fiver for when i began to really play the series seriously, but my actual first game in the series was Tri. I played the HBG of it's time, stumbled over myself, and got a very bad impression. wish i had given it a better shake when i was younger as sea stuff is my favorite thing, and maybe i would have discovered Monster hunter over all sooner, and been quite the different hunter. MHW's infinite restock changes so much between gens, on it's own, and my focus and interest in builds like mass sticky, bombardier, and perhaps even to a certain insect Kinsect attack primary in world would all be less viable without worlds ease in this regard. but I also feel bad for missing out on things like Tri when it was new, and never hearing about 4 ultimate until much later on.
@kurosan0079
@kurosan0079 2 жыл бұрын
@@DarkCT Yeah, you'd really need to have someone tell you what old Monster Hunter was actually about. Or else you'd come with unfair and inaccurate expectations. It's something Capcom never really tells you in the promo material. You'd have to talk to an actual fan to really know what you're getting into. They're games where everything is a test. Not just the fights. And I think I speak for a lot of people that the hunter sim-like experience is what we wanted to share way back when. Not the action-oriented games we have today. Oh, and you can still kind of get that same experience with World if you just flat out refuse to use the restock feature. You can still use the camp for healing just like how it used to work. If you ran out of stuff, just run around the map and get materials. It's as close as you can get to old school in that game. Did it myself on my playthrough and while not perfect, it's not too bad. (And it really baffles me why they even added that feature in the first place when restocking mid-hunt is already so seamless!)
@DarkCT
@DarkCT 2 жыл бұрын
@@kurosan0079 essentially the monhun you wanted to show to people didn't exactly arrive as you liked. I get why some say it's lost itself. thats not even the only way you can get a similar experience in world. all the Arena fights, both with your own gearset and precanned in their own ways in a sense deny the restock. also to certain extents Kulve, Safi, and Alatreon also all force you to work with just what you have on you at the time due to time restrictions or lack of recall. Personally, im glad for the option to have infinite camp restock and gear swaps, as all my favorite ways to play MHW either more heavily benefit from them than most (sticky), or probably wouldn't function at all (mass bomb). doing my kinsect primary weapon run in MHW:I without being able to swap staves or kinsects in the field for certain fights would have made it even more trouble too. what bugs me about MHW was how some systems they also added felt barely implemented. the slinger had so much more potential than it was given i feel, as an example, but was.. perhaps intentonally held back.
@kurosan0079
@kurosan0079 2 жыл бұрын
@@DarkCT Oh there certainly are quests that give you some sort of old school experience, but those are only on some parts of the game. Meanwhile, denying yourself the restocks entirely can be applied throughout the whole game's run time. And I can definitely see the fun factor of the restock camp, allowing you to essentially play however you want with unlimited resources. But to me, idk, it just feels cheap? Like I'm cheating the game somehow? It's hard to explain. It's like playing chess, but you can just replace pieces that have been taken by your opponent. The cost for messing up doesn't really feel like a "cost". You lost health, you healed, but you didn't really lose a potion for that hunt, because you can just go back in camp and refill. It's like making mistakes or even misusing things like bombs and traps don't really impact the hunt as much as it used to. Switching equipment is a different discussion though. I do think it's fine, but there should be limits. Like you shouldn't be able to change more than once or twice in a hunt or something like that. Without limits, it starts to feel like gear prep is kinda pointless. As for World's half-baked new mechanics, I sort of agree with that, but I'm willing to cut them some slack since this game is built from the ground up with a new engine, new renders and stuff. However, if things like mantles, scoutflies, the slinger, etc., aren't expanded upon come MH6 (or if they just removed them), then there's no more excuses.

This discussion is very similar to what happened in World of Warcraft, which I played for 19 years. Look at WoW Classic now, nostalgia was what made it seem harder, the clunky controls weren't what did it, neither was it the tedious grind. It was because of our minds and the fact that it wasn't fully understood 20 years ago. Progress is a process.

Already the fact that you can get potions from your storage while in quest once you run out, that you can change weapon while in quest, that you can eat while in quest, that you have infinite whetstones, that you don't need paintballs to track monsters, that you can heal while walking around, that you can use healbugs to heal, that the game gives you numbers of the damage you deal depending on what body part you hit, that there's no G rank, that you send directly to your storage whatever monster material you gather and so not needing to make space in your bag, that you have a dog and a cat companion that fight better than the average MH player, makes it way, way easier than old gen mh games. I'm a veteran, i started playing MHF on psp and to this day i still play MHFU (a game i started playing when it wasn't even outside Japan yet as I had modded PSP and played the game in Japanese), I can assure you new games are a joke compared to the old ones. The newer ones have a lot more 'outs' if you mess something up. That in itself makes them a lot easier comparatively for someone used to the older games. Having learned to fight i.e Tigrex before adept dodging, clutch claw or wirebug bullshit makes it that much easier when you get those tools available to you without the monster(s) changing much, if at all.

For me the reason why the mhfu is harder compared to the newer titles is that it doesn't have thr QOL's that newer games had. And lastly the weapons are more powerful in the newer ones I had so much fun playibg longsword on rise (even tho I'm a greatsword main)

Pretty sure the difficulty is the limited movement options for all weapons (i.e. back evade) It doesn't matter if the monster is predictable if you don't have any options to do against it. This is why imo Evade+ and Evade Distance skills we're pretty important Yea you're pretty on point on the bowgun difficulty thing too. you're far enough that you have time to read the monster then do the option that gets you safe.

Freedom Unite was my first MH when I was in middle school. It holds a special place in my heart. I put in around 600 hours solo, not even knowing how skills worked. I just made armors that looked cool and enjoyed it. I also remember being terrified by Ukanlos and being unable to beat it. Today, Freedom Unite has aged poorly, and I don't think you should base your understanding of older games around this one specifically, even though the farming part is pretty cool in this one. You should try out 3U / 4U / GU. Not everything at once though, take your time. Each game has a specific thing. Older is harder, yes it is true. There's no denying that. It is also a fact that the preparation part was much more prevalent in older games, and that it is missing from newer games. Let's say you felt like a hunter in the old world, whereas you feel like a headhunter in the newer games. I'm saying this even though I enjoy Rise quite a lot. I simply wish we could keep the preparation part, because there is not much hunt anymore, there are just showdowns with monsters. Anyway, if you started with world, I get it that you can feel antagonized by some old hunters, but if you go back and play the games, with good will, you would understand. I haven't seen one single person going back to the old games not understanding what the veteran hunters meant.

With that ones you have the main ones of all gens but if you really want to get more into the saga there are some that are worth to play like P3rd or MH3 (MH3 is getting an online server soon so you could play in Loc Lac).

In then to answer the question the the old games are hard, it's not the village or caravan quest. It's the hub/guild quest (which includes g-rank, or master rank to the newer players) All quests are either scaled up for 2 hunters or more, including event quest (scaled up to 4 hunters) monster hit much harder, have bigger health pool, and combine to inexperienced or unprepared player makes it difficult. Old games require you to prepare for the quest... The newer games on the guild, are either scaled for solo and multi (depends if 2, 3 or 4 hunters) so it feels easier. Also the newer games having fluidity in combat and camp restocking and meals makes it both harder and easier. (Harder since attack window is non existent, but easy because combat is now smooth with no item management)

As a solo player the main thing that's keeping me from replaying older titles again is the lack of hp scaling in the Guild quests. Having to hunt for 2,5x longer because the quests are always scaled for 3-4 people is a nightmare. It would be kind of doable if you only needed to do quests once, but that combined with the low drop rates in older monster hunter just makes me drop them instantly. I recently tried FU as well but once I reached HR village I just gave up because the quests were becoming unbearably long and I needed to farm 30 minute quests multiple times for a single piece of temporary equipment.
