my home airport! tbh the calls to shut down YTZ and replace it with a park are severely overblown, the airport is on the toronto islands which are already a huge public parkland. there's very very little political will to shut down the airport especially considering the ease of access it provides to downtown, and competition with air canada at YYZ.

The calls to close that airport have been ongoing for my whole life - but no matter what the City wants, the land / airport is held in a somewhat complex Crown Corp. The airport will be there for many decades to come. Hope you had fun in my hometown! We keep our plane on the Eastside of the city in Oshawa (CYOO) if you ever come back look us up.

I sure hope so. It looks like a really cool airport and not to far from my home airport in Watertown, NY. I got my PPL last October and working to finish up my Instrument rating currently. Hoping to fly there from KART later this fall or in the early winter.

I agree Glen .. a little to heavy on the clickbait for an airport I fly into regularly and both Air Canada and Porter operate numerous flights a day out of. The tripartite agreement they have in place will help to ensure that we have a wonderful waterfront airport for years to come. but I love that there are flight schools operating out of it and thus the "tried to land" being a little much for our wonderful and accessible to GA Toronto airport.

I like the Canadian ATC practice of not clearing you to land until you're #1. Easy to misunderstand if you're from the US though. Great flight, beautiful views. Hop on over to Michigan if you're ever in the area again. We've got some cool island airports, none like that in big cities but very pretty places.

Yeah whenever I fly down to the US, I find it a little odd to be "cleared to land" when there are 1 or 2 planes still descending ahead of me.
@lezhu6856
@lezhu6856 4 ай бұрын
noobie question, I see at YYZ the approach seperation gets quite close during rush hour, doesn't that pose an issue when you're getting landing clearance at almost minimums?
@paulbanman2353

Being cleared to land in sequence definitely seems like an American thing. I’ve never been cleared to land #2+ here.
@stephenp448
@stephenp448 4 ай бұрын
@@lezhu6856 minimums refers to the minimum altitude to which you're allowed to descend until you can see the runway. It doesn't matter if you've been cleared to land or not - if you hit that altitude and can't see the runway you go around. If you can see, you just continue the approach. Of course, if you get too close and haven't been cleared to land, then you should execute missed approach then as well.

The ones screaming the loudest to have the airport closed are people who have only recently moved to the area and don't like the noise. Go figure! If you want to land somewhere interesting, try Coutts/Ross International Airport. It has two ICAO airport codes: CEP4/K7S8. That’s right; it has both a Canadian code and an FAA code because the centerline of the runway is the US/Canada border between Coutts, Alberta Canada. And Sweet Grass, Montana! Another cool one (although it would require you to fly 10 nm over the Atlantic Ocean) is LFVP or St. Pierre airport. It is a small set of islands about 10 nm off the coast of Newfoundland, Canada that are still owned by France. They use the Euro, and it is legit French territory. You could legitimately say you flew to Europe in your C150!

Love me some YTZ. The experience as a passenger is miles ahead of YYZ. Blew my mind the first time I flew out of the airport. The closure stuff is overblown; the thing about Toronto is that we have a disproportionately high proportion of busybodies. Probably has to do with our British heritage. We get that kind of stuff over basically anything loud or fun happening in the city. It’s changing slowly though. One last thing: it’s _Tuhronno!_ The second T is silent 😉

Good thing you didn't divert to Burlington. Runways there need serious help and the pattern altitude is weird to stay below the terminal. I'd recommend YKF (Kitchener) as a good alternate if you need one in future. It's towered as well with lots of services on the field. And the runways are nice too.

If you are in the Niagara Falls area on a warm summer evening call the Niagara Falls Airport and if they have no traffic ask to do a practice approach and a low and over and as you climb out ask to do a 180 and another approach and low and over. You can check out all the military aircraft parked there since it is a shared airport. I often did this 50 years ago. Then as long as your wheels never touched the ground you didn't enter the US and didn't have to go through customs. Another thing watch out for the arrestor cables at the end of the runway. The rules may have changed since then.

CYTZ is in the top 15 busiest airports in Canada. Air ambulance for most of the southern part of the province is based there and has been voted #1 airport in North America for customer satisfaction. There is absolutely no chance it's closing regardless of what the local rag media reports say.
@lebojay
@lebojay 4 ай бұрын
I used to be regional operations manager for the air ambulance at YTZ. The air ambulance cannot move from that airport. Oshawa residents won’t tolerate the helicopters, and Hamilton is too far for the medics and pilots to commute. Brampton isn’t suitable and Buttonville is closed. And you can’t use Pearson because the emergency operations are too disruptive to the commercial operations there. In addition to being a base for the helicopters, it is also an airplane-to-helicopter and airplane-to-ambulance transfer area for patients coming in by airplane from all over the province because it is close to the province’s primary trauma centres (St. Mike’s and Sunnybrook hospitals). YTZ is a critical component of Ontario’s healthcare system. For that reason, it’s not going anywhere. Note: my information is 15 years old. I doubt anything has changed, but it is possible.

Respectfully, YTZ is not "...smack in the middle of a downtown city." YTZ is situated adjacent to the Toronto waterfront, well clear of high rise structures and the like. It does offer amazing city views, particularly at night, and is a straightforward airport to navigate to, and around, particularly if you stay under the Class C airspace. Nor is YTZ "under fire" to close. As a matter of fact, with a looming likely-change in Canada's government at the federal level, the federally-regulated Ports Authority, which owns and governs the airport, will become more amenable to proposed expansion plans to accommodate whisper quiet jet traffic. Toronto's costly and chaotic YYZ airport makes YTZ an ideal alternative for travel to regions that exceed the range of the Dash 8-400. Long live YTZ!
