I don't think I've seen anything more universal than design principles it's insane. Using contrast in music production (deep kick & bright percussion, etc) is also such a game changer. Theres so much to experiment with when you study basic design principles, and it's something I've never regretted learning.

Negative Space is one of the strongest tools for art out there, I am currently a visual artist (3D Art more specifically) and learning art fundamentals, and more specifically this one concept, was one of the biggest changes in my career. Now that I am learning music I notice that the overlap between visual arts and music is quite big and a lot of the concepts translate from one to the other, also why I am trying to mostly focus on this in my journey. Thanks for the video, really great to see the concept in action and explained in a music context!

This is exactly how i would visualize sidechain multiband compression on a main channel like vocals...etc it's like a camera filming scenery but everytime a rabbit appears it blurs its surroundings to focus on it and follow its movements with higher resolution and framerate
@LesterWayneDobos5 ай бұрын
compressors create negative space in dB like it doesn't make a sound, but you can definitely hear it especially in the mix with other instruments. Try using multiple brands of compressors on one track to increase the effect. ty

Great analogies with visual art! I always envision the picture before creating a track, and it's an amazing idea to translate the image you want to create into music.

I liked the video but I don't think it is about negative space ;) For me it would have been to sidechain your melody on soothe to create a filter on something that isn't even here for example. Keep everything apart for the main melody that is removed from a total by a soothe utility sidechained on the original melody 😊
@rez91595 ай бұрын
Thought the same. The cutout of the tree was a good example but didn't match to the samples later in the video. I would understand negative space as something like a hole in between of sounds which fading out matching the attack from a non existing sound (like ducking where the original fitting element is muted). A silence where you hear clearly which element could fit but still isn there. The Video is more about filling spaces than the idea of negative spaces.

@@TheRealPaulCaplin i did. but the promised content wasn't there. it's not rocket science that there are quiet moments in a track where details are worked out. Musicians have been doing that for 1000 years. the thumbnail suggests that a secret is being revealed.

I can't understand what this process has to do with negative space...Negative space in music is silence. What I see in this video is basically making music. Filling silence with arrangement choices and give the right focus on the elements you want to be in focus when they must be in focus. I don't get it...
@stefanmelendez36615 ай бұрын
Negative space doesn’t have to be blank. At least that’s Alice’s thesis on it in this video. Positive space is your main element, while negative space would be the rest of the elements that highlight the main element. Hope this helps!
