I’m sold on this as a decluttering method. When it is time to organize an area aka maximize what fits is when taking it all out and sorting works. They really are two different processes

Hi Jenny, I feel that is why this method worked so good for this area. I knew there were a ton of things that just needed to be put away and decluttered. Inside my home I think this method would be harder because I have already gone through everything. =)

I love Dana's system! I start everything with: Just look for obvious trash. Otherwise, I can't face it. But, just looking for trash, gets me started, and sometimes even finished.

I have always cleaned this way; never knew there was a name for it. I just throw things out or put them away or put them in a box to donate. I often get a lot of steps in when I clean because I'm always going back and forth to different rooms to put things away. I love your mom; she's so funny!

Dana’s system is so good. I used it with my husband to clean out his junk drawer. He found it a pain in the a** when I kept repeating take it there now but he was so pleased with the result 😊

If you put your paint tray in a plastic bag before you pour the paint in. It makes cleaning up the tray easier. You just take the plastic bag off and turn inside out to trap the paint on the inside and voila no washing of paint trays.

Love that your Mum came by to help you, having a "buddy/helper" means that you are less likely to give up halfway through, plus, there is someone to ask for help when you are 'not sure' about something, and they can perhaps give you some logical reasons as they are not attached to the objects [emotionally]. Love your Mum by they way, she has a great smile and sense of humour, no doubt where you get yours from!! ❤ I expect that the next logical step for your garage is to do some 'labelling' so that EVERYONE knows where to put things away [ and where they are!] keep up the good work encouraging us all! My basement is similar to your garage. I have been just tidying up a little bit every time I go down to do the laundry. I need to do a big spring cleaning day down there, but Dana’s method has really helped to keep me from making a bigger mess. It really works on an overwhelming space like that.

Yeah - Mom arrived! It's always a good day when mom shows up to help!!! I'm very surprised that your garage is a "bit chaotic" when your home is so well organized. It's so easy to ignore a garage dumping ground especially when you're constantly working on projects and it's your husband's profession. I look forward to the "garage organization" series. There's a lot of storage already with the cupboards you have. And...gotta have mom there to add the humor!

Hi Linda, unfortunately my husband is not a naturally organized person lol. He told me a year ago that he had a plan for the garage and he would do it and this is what it has continued to look like, so I thought it was time to step in and help.

Dana’s system has really helped me. My house is in such better shape. As you do the ‘take it there now’ frequently, you will find that you can look around and pick up several things to take at once. Not having piles to deal with later helps me toward progress, not perfection.

I was able to get my husband on board with helping declutter and organize our garage by asking him to help for 30 minutes. He felt that was fair. We always ended up working longer once he got on a roll 😂...my favourite moment was when I asked him about a broken Roomba on a shelf..."I was saving that for parts..." 😂 He decided to e-waste it.

I feel a lot better about throwing out trash because here in the UK we have very good kerbside recycling collections. Knowing that stuff is going to be recycled rather than ending up in landfill is a great inducement to getting rid of stuff that cannot be donated.

I have one of those too - a husband that has no system and a hoarder besides. 😄. Now we are trying to clean up so we can sell our home and move to a seniors apartment. So you're being very wise to keep clutter down now. If we would have known 30-40 years ago how much work it is to get rid of all our collectables we likely would never have hung on to it.

A tip for a modified version I like to use: Instead of putting things away right away, have a laundry basket next to your trash bag. Everything that needs to go somewhere else goes in there. When it is full, or when you finished for the day, *then* you go room to room and put everything where it belongs. I find that this helps keep you focused on the decluttering, as I personally get distracted and demotivated if I have to stop all the time. :)

What about adding some pegboard to the blank wall space? That way you have your most used items handy but you can easily put them back and they are off the flat work surface. Great progress 🎉

Moving things directly to their place one at a time is great if you’re wearing a Fitbit or equivalent to get extra steps! 😁
