My CFS has been amazing over the last year and the chance of me having a flare up due to this was low; but I still walk/ran when I needed to, and stopped when my body told me to. CFS is why you were capable of doing this. Your ability to push yourself even when exhausted is applicable even when CFS is not kicking your butt. This is why the US said to give me your tired, your poor and your huddled masses. Because the downtrodden always have more of a fire in their spirit because they have no choice they must push on to survive and live a decent life.

As a long distance runner myself, I can absolutely back that running is a mental battle just as a physical one. Well done on achieving a half marathon 😊❤

As a non-runner: absolutely, I get bored and start to focus on every pain and then I get angry at how slow I am and how I'm not getting better then I loose all motivation so I just stop running for a month lol. Literally can't do it mentally, but I'd consider myself physically fit enough (although with the pandemic it's not at peak atm xD), since I'm doing Martial Arts and exercise very intensely.

Also a runner but quickly learned I’m middle distance/short distance runner can run a mile in bout 5 and 1/2 minutes feel dead inside if I try to run more 5k.

exactly, around 6th kilometer the individual "pain" of muscles etc. stops and then its just a mental battle with your whole body telling you to stop

I respect your enthusiasm, posivity, and achievement. However, I cannot stress enough how bad this is to attempt, especially with chronic fatigue syndrome. The chances of making you flare up are great, along with long term damage to joints/injury. Pacing is extremely important for cfs. Please take care of you

Thank you for your worry! I completely agree with you, but I wouldn’t have done it if I thought I was at a high risk of a serious flare up. There was only a small chance of a flare up after this (as I’ve been looking after myself and keeping my workload light for a while), which is why I bit the bullet and did it; I listened to my body and stopped when I thought I was entering real danger territory, I alternated walking and running for this reason too. As I said in the video, my hips are a degenerative condition so they are only getting worse regardless of what I do. Which means that this isn’t really going to impact them much truthfully as they are already long-term damaged, it’s only downhill from here! 😭 I agree that most with CFS shouldn’t do this, and I did say in the video that I don’t recommend most people do this at all - it’s just something that I personally felt was important to do for me. I’ve looked after myself super well since, and I’m resting and recovering 💗

@@Ellbat I'm really glad to hear that, still well done anyway. I think it definitely boosted yourself. You can see it in you, so I understand what it meant to you. I'm 46 and been disabled and chronically ill for nearly 16 years, was pretty fine till I was 30, apart from a wonky spine. So I'm speaking from on the other side if you like. Positivity is great, but it does have limits for some. I hope you continue to be well and happy ☺️

A half Marathon is a thing. Without training that is insane. Yes, be proud, well done! Training would have made it easier, perhaps, because training could have caused you hip injuries as well. Thank you for this. As someone with an issue with my right hip since having COVID in 2020, I truly felt your pain. It also taught me I can do more than I am and stop when I feel too much pain.

I really appreciate you being open about your struggles with CFS! That takes strength and makes you way more badass for still doing all the things you do! Edit: The distance is seriously impressive. I can't jog for more than a kilometer without feeling sick, but this motivates me a lot.

I've run a lot of 5ks. There are lots of people who sign up for them thinking "it's only 3 miles." Every 5k I've ever run, 1/2 the pack starts walking once we round the first bend where their family and friends can't see them anymore. Running is hard.

xD This is the funniest. You see people, like me starting in the '4:30-5:00'/km group, and "everyone" takes off and I'am like 'Sheeeeet, I must've overestimated my 4:35/km' ...two km later... and ...yeah... there they all are :P

I'm glad you stopped at half. I thought everyone knew the story of the first person to run the 24-26 mile distance, to deliver news. They died pretty soon after reaching the goal and announcing that news. (this was waaay before modern medicine though, so you'd probably be fine if paramedics got there). It's important to train and get yourself fit enough to handle that kind of distance.

It was actually (who else?) a Greek guy, who run from Marathonas (this is why it is called marathon) to Athens which is 42km or 34km (depending on the route he chose), and messaged the Athenians that "we won" (in a battle with Persians) and dropped dead. But the whole story is not very clear, and it is supposed to have many elements that are missing.

@@MariaTkl This actually is not true, not that it didn't happen, but it's not the reason the modern marathon is the distance it is. The marathons in the first Olympic Games, starting with the 1896 games in Athens, were not fixed and we're around 40km. In 1921 the International Olympic Committee agreed that the standard distance for the marathon would be the distance that was used in the Olympic marathon at the 1908 games in London which was held from Windsor Castle to White City Stadium plus one lap of the track. This is why it's such a weird distance and not a full set of miles or kilometres. I'm not belittling the heritage, the modern Olympic organisers wanted an event to tie the event to the Ancient Greek Olympic Games and having an event named after the fabled run Pheidippides made from the Battle of Marathon to Athens died the bill, just that the distance used isn't that from Marathon to Athens.

Girrrrl major props to you, this is such an incredible achievement!! I've been a runner for over 9 years and I've done my first marathon last year (ngl it was the hardest thing I've ever done) and I put about six months of really tough and difficult training into it, so seeing you attempt this without any training seems insane. You can be super proud of yourself for making it this far, this was really inspirational to watch! Also, thanks for being so open about your struggles. Mad respect for you! 💚

I know several people who have. Their knee and ankle injuries lead to say please don’t. And they started out fairly fit and exercising several times a week! Honestly I wouldn’t even WALK a marathon with no training 😂 Ellbat: “I want to give myself the best possible chance to complete this!” Also Ellbat: Does it with zero training

I know it sounds silly but if I ran as much as I needed to in order to train to run this marathon, it would’ve aggravated my hips to the point where running it was impossible. The condition is degenerative so it gets worse with time and usage, so training could’ve caused a lot more pain, and a much lower chance of completion 😭

I've been training for a half marathon lately (which may well be changed to a virtual event due to the Delta variant of C-19 outbreak here in Aus 🇦🇺), and I've been feeling kinda flat about it lately. Also, I have hip impingement too, and my left hip especially has been murder lately. Thank you for making this video and inspiring me again, I really needed it right now. And congrats on your achievement! Maybe I'll start sharing my journey online too, you're an inspiration ❤️

My hip impingement announced itself for the first time (that I was aware of) when I did a half marathon! Absolute agony, I don't think I'd ever put myself through that shit again. But good luck! It's an experience 👍

@@honeypot9867 Last year they had participants walk/run the 14km distance around their local area instead of travelling to central Sydney and gathering in a massive group (understandably, with Covid happening). They didn't cancel altogether, but had participants register online and record/stream their participation and sent out the participation shirts and medals via Australia Post. I was a bit bewildered by the whole idea of a 'virtual run', tbh, so I just did the distance in my hometown as I usually do when I'm training anyway. It's definitely a lot less exciting than the usual event, but a lot safer virus-wise. With the Delta variant wave going on in Sydney atm I'll be more surprised if the 2021 event isn't a virtual one.

Ohh, that's very odd. I'm curious about what the streams look like. but I can definitely see how that would be less exciting online compared to IRL. my friend likes to run a lot and she trains for our local marathon and she says the energy of being around a bunch of runners and seeing the passion in other people is what makes the marathon fun. but seriously, it's very impressive that even without much motivation coming from marathons due to covid that you still do the distance, so hats off to you. Just know that some random teenager from the internet is proud, haha :)

@@honeypot9867 Thank you, that actually means a lot to me, it's usually an event to raise funds for charity but it's difficult to get people hyped up when everyone is in different places on their own. The race atmosphere definitely makes a massive difference, it'll be a big deal for everyone when we can all run together for the event, and a lot of people get dressed up for it. I remember two years ago there were a bunch of people running in inflatable dinosaur suits 😂🦖

I love the smile at the end and I can really relate. I've been obese most of my life. At the age of 26 I lost 80 pounds and started running. Then a friend of mine signed me up for a half-marathon. I thought he was crazy but after couple of months of training I went for it. After I finished, first I started crying (happy tears) and then laughing. It was the most amazing feeling of accomplishment in my life. And when I saw your big smile, it took me back to that moment, so I just want to thank you :)

I love that you woke up one day and decided to run a marathon. Props that it didn't kill you. I have an athletic background and have been trying however unsuccessfully to get back on the team I used to compete with...which involves consistently showing up to work outs and progressing from there. Congrats again. You're my hero.

As an elderly run/walker who signed up to Run the Walt Disney World Marathon in January 2022 & have never run more than a 10k, I was really struggling mentally this past week. I actually trained for a half marathon and I still struggled with the race so this was extra impressive to me that you were able to do all this. Also mixing running and walking is a totally valid approach!

I ran my first (and maybe last) half marathon this past may, with some similar limitations and thoughts that "if i dont do this now i may never will" - it really is an experience in which you can always hold a sense of pride, and i appreciate your documentation of your journey! Elena!! You should totally try to start a compost bin (if that’s a possibility for you), and show the journey! All the bits and bobs of veggies and fruits can get put in and won’t go to landfill!! This was an awesome video and I love the final message at the end, I needed that thanks❤️

"Even though my body was screaming at me, I was grateful... felt stronger than ever". Welcome, you are now a runner. :) This is why most of us do it and it's hard to explain to a non runner. Keep it up, but increase mileage very gradually. Cca. 10% a week with rest days which are really very important.

Seriously I wish you would do comedy as your timing and delivery are perfect. Aside from that I honestly believe you could have finished the full distance if you had some guidance and your hips don’t explode. I’m very confident of this. You did almost everything wrong. Funny and entertaining as always, but again with the right guidance you could have done 26.2.

Getting as far as you did with no training, body pain, breathing pains... that is a serious pat on the back. Most people don't even get out of their office chair or couch. You were and are determined. Every video I have seen has been an inspiration in one for or another. I tip my hat to you Ellbat. I can't even run a mile anymore If I tried. 3 back surgeries all in the same location.

Running is totally 50/50 physical and mental battle. I love distance Running because of the battle but even after full training (5 months) i cried from mile 20 on my first marathon. Also run/walking is a legitimate way of running distance its called jeffing and i know many peopl who jeff half, full and ultra marathons. Well done on completing your first half 👏

Watching this video was just me going "Oh, I have that diagnosis too! Wow, and that too, and that too!" I did get the hip operation already though, and it took a long time and a lot of rehabilitation and training to heal, but I'm very happy I got it. It really helped a lot. Even so, I'm never gonna run a marathon or even half of one. I can imagine the pain, which, YIKES, so let me just say: 1. You're crazy girl, and 2. Mad respect.

Hi Elena, I'm 39 and have similar illnesses to you, I have fibromyalgia, hypermobility syndrome esp bad in the hips, plus tons of other things. My health is unlikely to improve much. I miss how I used to be able to go for long walks up in the hills and along the beach, and do things with the kids. I completely understand where you come from when you say if you don't do it now you may never have the chance again. I love your attitude to things in general and your sense of humour, I hope your young audience can take things away from your videos to implement in their own lives. You're a great role model for young people of today, especially girls. I have 3 teen girls and often mention your videos to them. Thanks for being real, and well done on that half marathon, not to be sniffed at!! Xxx

Here's wishing you a good recovery from your run. And please treat your body sensibly from now on and don't do that kind of stupid sh*t for the clicks anymore. It's great that, with this run, you've achieved something that you feel is worth something. Now that you know what you can do on the spot and have built up some muscle while doing it, that is a great chance now to actually keep on running and start regular training.

Well done! I ran cross country in my youth and learned so much about what my body is capable of! I felt very motivated while watching this video but after finishing it and my zero sugar Monster energy drink and returning to my 9-5 desk job...I regrettably lost all of the motivation you built up in me. Now I'm motivated to just stay alive until 5pm.

I had an injury to my hip/pelvic area and no one knew how to help me for 7.5 years. I could barely walk two blocks without being in severe pain. Everyone I went to was stumped. But I knew, deep down, that something could be done. So I went to a spinal specialist, who then sent me to his physiotherapist. Finally, someone knew what was going on! In 3 months I was mostly back to normal. And after a year, on a whim, I decided to walk from my house to a friend's business. It was just over 20kms and I did it. I had never walked that far in my life. And I was so proud of myself! I swear, a lot of doing a thing is just deciding to do it because why not?

It was really awesome to watch you do this! I signed up for a 10k in August back in June and was in training, then hurt my foot badly at work a week ago. I'm not going to be able to do it even walking and was really down about it, and your experience here cheered me up some!

Honestly, Ellbat, considering your fatigue and hip problems and the complete lack of training, I think you did amazing! An entire half-marathon is still a feat. I'm proud of you, and I hope you can get that surgery at some point. My mom has two types of arthritis, and it's really a huge pain for her.

Well done Ell! I have bad hips and lower back too, and I have found that a regular health and fitness regime really does help the pain. Working out the muscles around the area helps to support the joints, although I believe mine is from hypermobility within that area of my body so I'm not sure if that advice is any good for you. To ease post work out pain I would keep high protein diet and soak in hot baths with epsom salts. Getting a good stretch in every day pre and post work out. I didn't even know chronic fatigue syndrome was a thing but I can barely get through the days without a nap, but I'm also 32 and have twins (which could have contributed to my hip pain lol). If anyone had told me 10 years ago that this is how I'd feel then I probably would have taken my body's health more seriously. I hope you find the time or figure out a way to get your hips taken care of and get all the things done as well! Coming from someone who loves dancing and hiking but everything hurts lol 💓 kudos to you for what you've accomplished I don't know how this comment reads but it was well meaning 🥴
