At first, I was worried you'd just go to The Columbia and I was sad, their Cuban food is really good there but it's not the spot for a to-go sandwich like that. I am a HM major/huge food lover from the Philly area, who worked in a restaurant this past summer for the first time. His Philly assessment is absolutely spot on. John’s is an exceptional cheesesteak, it was the first I had on my list and I had always wanted to go. I hadn’t had dalessandros in forever and it was decent but they didn’t know what I meant when I said whiz wit, which was a bit of a red flag, but the cheesesteak was ok. I went to Angelo’s with my uncle at the end of the summer and waited 1.5 hours+ on a Tuesday at 3 o’clock for our food. Oh my god was it worth it. Not only was it hands down the best cheesesteak I’ve ever had and possibly the best sandwich, but the pizza was easily the best I’ve had in the Philly area, rivals and honestly trumps John’s of Bleeker in New York. If you are visiting Philly, devote a large portion of one of your days to go to Angelo’s. I’m from Chicago, and while I will say Al’s was much better back in the day (like prior to the pandemic), there are other spots in the city that were even better than the ones you mentioned. The best italian beef of all time was at a place called Fast Track on West Lake street. It closed during the pandemic unfortunately, but the building is still there and every true Chicagoan is heartbroken that it’s gone. There’s also D’amato’s Bakery, which is not as well known for the italian beef (I go there for their incredible italian cookies) but they have the best bread and the best quality ingredients in the city. Urban legend has it that the Italian Beef started out as wedding food during the Great Depression. When you soak the bread in the au jus, it satisfies like meat. Wet is thus the proper way to eat this sandwich. The best way to enjoy this sandwich is to order it with a side salad instead of fries. Eat the sandwich (wet with peppers of your choice) directly over the salad. Whatever falls into the salad will make it taste better. Portillos got sold to a corporation that reduced portion sizes. Don't go there for Italian beef. It's normal for sweet peppers to be mushy. They are cooked in the same au jus as the beef.

The fact that Portillo’s is on the list is an affront to Chicago. They used to be awesome but since private equity took over their quality went way down, it’s still good o it’s your only option but shouldn’t make a top ten. You should have put Johnnie’s in there instead of Portillo’s but the voters spoke, unfortunately most of them probably don’t live in Chicagoland anymore.

Here's the thing about Katz's, from a New Yorker. Unfortunately, it's become just a tourist spot. That's why the line is so long and probably why the people who work there were skeptical jerks. Even like fifteen years ago you could walk in, wait in a normal line, and get your giant sandwich, sit, and enjoy. But I rarely go even though I love the sandwiches because, as you say, it's NYC and I can get a Reuben anywhere and it's no longer worth the experience. Blame, in part, When Harry Met Sally.

It is god tier breakfast food, served with well done fried egg and melted American cheese, optional salt pepper ketchup, served on a kaiser roll (standard central-south jersey) or a bagel (north jersey). It's a thick, heavily spiced, freshly deli sliced pork product....like a top shelf reserve spam, lol. The kicker is you really can only get it in new jersey, a small part of Pennsylvania, Connecticut and a small area of NYC/Bronx. In case you didn't know, NJ is home to some of the best bread (bagels, pizza dough, hoagie rolls) in the country. The exclusivity of the Taylor ham makes it that much more special.
