@@AJVANBAKKER While I don't know any clothes grabbing ones besides Judo and BJJ which don't count since they don't incorperate any other stuff. One that uses Headbutts and most strikes is a sport called Lethwei. Or less commonly known as Burmese Kickboxing sadly Muay Thai thanks to the thai's having so much nationolstic pride killed any popularity other asian full contact sports would have had. Lethwei being the biggest one that got shafted on people knowing about it. It's basically just about how Muay Thai would be used in a real brawl the fights are quick and the ref even encourages you to go at each other if your being too slow feeling each other out. It's the closest sport I know outside of Kudo that's as close to a real fight as ruled sports can get. One wierd rule it has though if you get knocked unconscious the fight isn't actually automatically over. Your corner has like 2 minutes to resuscitate or revive you to have another chance to continue fighting. Granted it's not used an insane amount but there was a fight where a dude got revived and proceeded to body the other fighter winning the fight which just blew my mind. Oh and forgot to mention it doesn't use gloves either it either uses the traditional ropes somewhat, wraps rarely, and most fights are just straight up bare knuckle which is one more realism point.

Certainly one of the most realistic and street ready styles out there. As a lightweight dude, I especially like their protective gear, with helmets instead of heavy gloves, thus allowing for more realistic punching by lightweights. What I find not so realistic is actually the general way fights evolve. Too much movement and footwork, and consequently not enough grappling and hand control. Street fights don't usually happen on flat clean mat floors with bare feet.

Usually we work on a certain technique and approach it from different angles, playing different scenarios and different ways of applying the same technique. After that we spar trying to apply what we just learned in a real combat and in the end some general muscle training like sit-ups push-ups etc. On the second session we do throwing and grappling. Something very important that was shown during sparring is that training grappling and striking separately does not automatically make you a good hybrid fighter. Like when he explained that you wouldn't throw strikes while on the clinch simply because it's not something you are used to doing in sparring. Training combat sports while adding "anything goes" mentality once in a while makes you a lot more likely to surprise a trained opponent in a street scenario. Nothing makes a BJJ practitioner more uncomfortable than another grappler that's used to striking on the ground. Great video, Rokas! You are doing really well!
@dr.dylansgame55832 жыл бұрын
Exactly I used to think myself I had no standing weaknesses as an all around striker with a defensive wrestling base. Then I met a BJJ guy who also was just about as good at me at striking as well. He proceeded to not only take me to the ground but pummel me granted I asked him to pressure me to show me my weaknesses. And at this time I had special defenses already designed to defend a beating on the ground specfically and even those didn't work. Since he used his grappling to manipulate my guards. Since then I learned every defensive and counter technique from BJJ I could not the offense though since I use the counters and defense to get out of a grapple and reset. Unless i'm in a dominant position and know i'm 100 percent safe and their is no easy counter that could turn the whole position around in one go.

Jesse Enkamp has a video about how modern Karate is incomplete as it is, as Japan turned it into a national form of boxing. That said "The best style is no style." Don't get into Kudo to be a Kudoka instead of a Judoka and Karateka. Learn as many techniques as you can from where you can, and without bias or personal preference use what works and discard what doesn't. Remember that a fight doesn't care what style you do, what you can and are willing to do and then actually do are what matters. Additionally, you didn't do it "wrong", as it can be beneficial to learn stance&movement/footwork, striking&blocks, grappling&immobilizations/locks, and takedowns&throws separately and to spend your time focusing on each but remembering there is more than what you are doing available to you and your opponent. Then learn to use them together like is shown here in Kudo or in MMA, JKD, Krav Maga, Aikido and similar hybrid systems where your intention or goal is what matters rather than the techniques that people claim those systems have or don't have. Just my 2cents anyway. Edit: also I didn't even include tools/weapons because that is its own beast altogether.

I've trained MMA with my BJJ gi, and been on the receiving end of a MMA guy training judo and boxing before jiu-jitsu, and it was an eye opening session. Highly recommend training method, even if you are doing it with just slaps. Some red cheeks will follow! :D A friend who used to get in to fights quite a bit, once said "It's pretty awkward how a tough kickboxer reacts when you grip him by the jacket and punch him to the face. What growth Rokas! I've been curious to try Kudo for a long time, but I haven't heard about any dojos here in Portugal. That aside, I really want to congratulate you on your journey, because the progress is more than apparent. Just by watching your stance/guard, your relaxed motions in an idling stance, the subtle foot work, the hopping, combination work, etc is miles ahead of what you started with. Those basic things are a great showing of someone's skill and a great way to gauge it. Keep it up friend!

Hey Rokas! What did you think of judo in its purest form and judo throws in kudo? Is judo more complete? Is kudo more efficient? Is judo-only sparring essential to learn the throws or kudo sparring is enough? I've always asked myself this.
@m5a1stuart832 жыл бұрын
Judo throw is generic throw much like in every grappling arts. The evolution throws in Judo is different than what happen in Kudo. Kudo is more like practical, while Judo is more technical. I mean, you punchs and kicks to get someone out of balance and then do the throws or take downs. and go for the submissions or pinning and do rapid punching.
@MartialArtsJourney2 жыл бұрын
Granted that I am new to this myself, I imagine kudo would make a more complete judoka, since once you grab you can expect to be punched at, or even punch yourself which is a much more realistic approach. Under these conditions you are forced to learn only judo that works really well and you can also benefit from shifting your opponents attention to other areas. Meanwhile while I think judo is great it seems to be so tightly attached to its rules that the practice ends up specializing itself to deal with the rules first and foremost instead of looking for the most efficient approach altogether.

@@MartialArtsJourney You should check out SHIDOKAN Karate... it's also an offshoot from Kyokushin that includes grappling, but we also have a ruleset called Shidokan Triathlon Tournaments. 1st round is Kyokushin rules plus Judo and newaza for up to 30 seconds before standing up... 2nd round is Kickboxing that is similar to Muay Thai and Muay Chaiya... 3rd round is basically MMA rules. I think you'll enjoy it !!
@Haywood-Jablomie2 жыл бұрын
@@BacatauMania I can't speak for Kudo but I can tell you that in Shidokan Karate, we Learn all Judo and BJJ techniques but we put more emphasis on the techniques that have a higher chance to work against a striking opponent, basically what Rokas said. We learn the whole list of techniques, but in reality you'll mostly focus on the ones that you personally can pull off more often. We try to not let our techniques be influenced by the rules because this will limit our scope too much. Instead we all pretty much agree that even "Illegal" techniques are worth exploring because we don't want to stand there hesitating and thinking, if you pause, you get hit. It's better to react and take a penalty rather than pause and get choked out . Just my opinion as a 4th Dan. START TRAINING !!!

Really really cool video, I'd love to see more of this! I also think it would be more comfortable to watch the video if there were fewer hard cuts in conversations, I personally don't mind if some of the sentences are not as straight forward and it makes it more relaxing to watch if there are less rapid cuts.
@BFGalbraith742 жыл бұрын
Wow this was at the top of my bucket list to see from Rokas, thanks for doing this video! Aikido and Nippon Kempo both have Sumo roots, so like what Gingercore69 and Lewis Barrett were saying, it would be fun to see you contrast Kudo with Nippon Kempo if you ever get a chance to cross train in Nippon Kempo.
@lewisb852 жыл бұрын
Whats interesting is one of the main UK Nippon Kempo dojos is 6 mins away from the Roger gracie academy and 10 mins away from the uk combat jujitsu academy, if someone was to manage their time right they could train in practical martial arts that are proved to work and the cross pollination ideas between Nippon Kempo and CJJ in respect to re enforcing what you have done training one or the other are endless.

I'm still new to it so it's hard to give a definitive answer, but I do see its advantages over MMA, especially with the ability to grab clothes and headbutt. If I were to do either MMA or Kudo just for the ability to defend myself in a street fight, I would probably go to Kudo first

for reguler person like, I will choose Kudo over MMA, since, hey you get 1 package of martial arts, punching, kicking, elbows, knee, throwing, take down and submissions. while in MMA, you must train atleast kick boxing (pay), bjj (more pay), wrestling (more pay), muay thai (more pay). so yeah, Kudo is more like an amateur like me.

06:30 you want to be dropping down, not jumping up. Jesse Enkamp talks about this in a video. Those jumps up put you in the air and leave you vulnerable for longer, drops down like he (instructor/white/left) was doing take less energy, make you less sore, and most crucially allow you to transition or to change directions and move quicker & easier.
