I’ve not washed my hair with shampoo since 2019. Just water. Had 2 week transition of waxy coarse hair but then it transformed! I massage my scalp to distribute sebum then brush thoroughly before washing with warm water and finish with cold water rinse. And wash hairbrush weekly! No baking soda / ACV needed 👍🏼

Maryellen Creative - persevere, it’s SO worth it! My hair is long like yours, slight wave. It’s thicker since water only - I notice that when I plait it or put in a pony tail. It grows faster now and no frizzy humidity hair in damp weather. Dries super quick. No static, less tangles. Had people ask what products I use and their face when I say water only is hilarious.

Anni, did you do anything for the waxy transition?? It's killing me but I'm trying to tell myself it will get better. I've been almost 2 weeks without a shampoo (and I have only shampoo'd 3 times in the last 1.5 months). I water washed last week and then again yesterday (7 days later). But it feels gross and oily and waxy! Do I just wait it out? It sounds like yours changed, but did you just wait it out or do anything along the way?

When I was a teenager, I went through this crunchy neo-hippie phase where I just plain did not wash my hair......virtually ever......at all. This was years before the No Poo movement; I was just a fan of the 60's and wanted to live like a hippie, LOL. I think I went about 3 years without washing mine at all, and I've got photos that can back up how weirdly fluffy my hair was during that period. Part of me's always wanted to re-visit this idea with a slightly augmented version like this, like with the baking powder/apple cider vinegar rinses just to feel like it is still being cleansed with something (because honestly, in my teens, I just didn't give a crap how I looked, good or bad lol) but never had the guts to do it. Seeing how many people are doing this during quarantine, I'm seriously considering giving this another shot...

One thing that's been helping me with the "greasy" stage is a boar bristle brush, they help distribute the oil on your scalp. It also give your hair more shin and gets rid of frizz.

I'm actually amazed! I was ready to suffer for 2-4 weeks. But after the first BS/ACV wash (on day 7) my hair is just as clean and nice as usual. Wow! I just want to research a bit to make sure soda and vinegar are safe. And if that's the case then I don't see any reason to use shampoo and conditioner ever again. Update 3 months later. Now I wash my hair once in ~7-10 days, rather than every other day. So happy with no poo😅🔥

Be mindful not to use baking soda for too long or too often, its PH level is like a 9 of the baking soda and your scalp PH is only 5 ... with long term use it will start to cause damage to your scalp and hair. Hence why it's such a great and effective cleaner for showers and kitchens 🙈 Transition to something a little less harsh like chic pea flour when you can! Hope this is helpful!!

I always washed my hair every 2 days at night. But I HATED the feeling of wet hair. So I just stopped lmao. I now only wash it once every 7-8 days (with hars chemical shampoo). I noticed it has a lot more shine to it! Only needed like 3 to 4 weeks of my hair getting used to it. Today I washed with ACV for the first time instead of shampoo. After showering I added sunflower oil to my hair. I LOVE IT. My curls are back!! Before it was almost completely straight. But now, I'm a curly girl again!! I feel so pretty ❤

OK here's what happens, if you think about shampoo and soap is a modern thing, for money grabbing companies, when we didn't have industrial societies, we mostly relied on water, water already has healing and washing properties obviously, the reason your hair gets back to normal is cause your natural oils act as your natural shampoo, your hair is dead, it's the skin underneath you need to protect, so yer natural products like apple cider, lavender oil, and coconut oil, all help cause they are natural abd help distribute your oils. So your doing it right, all you need to do is use water and massage.

So one thing I didn't know in the beginning of doing no poo was about hard water. I went eight months with oily waxy looking hair and I thought that it just wasn't going to work for me. I did an applesauce mask and my hair was instantly beautiful and fluffy and clean for the first time. It was definitely really hard to rinse out but it worked. So I have transitioned to using jug water from the store and my hair is doing a lot better but I still wash it with shampoo and conditioner once a month. I find that when I do my hair starts falling out like it used to. I just want to let you all know that I have been doing the no poo thing for almost a year and a half and it has been a rough process for me but I'm still sticking with it. So keep that in mind about the hard water because if you're having problems that could be the issue. If you're afraid of your hair looking too oily during the beginning of the process then I suggest wearing cute bandanas or doing braids for a while. Good luck in your journey and God bless

I've always been the type to let my hair get greasy due to depression where I wouldnt wash or brush my hair for periods of time. Which my hair always felt super soft when I was in a good period and able to wash and brush my hair because of the oils sitting for the time they had. I have a chronic illness and so for a while now I've been stuck in my house just lazing in bed because not feeling good and hating myself make it really hard to face the world and actually take care of myself. I know it sounds gross, I hate myself for it. But this quarantine I've been trying to make changes and force myself to take care of myself better even on the days I'd rather just not do anything at all. It's been hard but I so want to love myself and my life and feel better about myself. So I've decided to actually try the no poo method. I would use sulfate free, paraben free, silicone free, alcohol free shampoo and conditioner before, because I do care about taking care of myself when possible, but sometimes it's so hard because I cant even look at myself or care enough. I flip flop. It sucks but I want to get out of this cycle and actually try to be a better me. It's the baby steps. I've been officially no poo for about a week. I've also been trying to do things to center myself and keep myself feeling like I am actually accomplishing something. There have been days where I slacked and let my thoughts take hold and the fatigue drain me but I've been making an effort to push past it. It's been really hard but deciding to go no poo has really helped me put other things in my life into perspective. I never thought something like taking care of your hair could make you want to be a better person but for me it has. I know it sounds really weird. I hope I get good results.

I've always read that baking soda is harsher on your hair than shampoo is. I've gone back and forth from water only to using shampoo a couple times in the last 6 months just depending on how I'm feeling. Water only with thorough scalp massages daily with a very diluced acv herb rinse seems to keep my scalp in great shape during the transition. i use cheap green tea packets, rosemary, and lavender. I think the rosemary is the only one that really does something other than the acv, but it seems to reeeally help with dandruff. I do about a teaspoon and a half acv to 2 cups of the herb rinse. Massage my scalp all over dry first and try to move the oil down my hair strands with my fingers, then i spray the mixture onto my hands and scalp and rub it in. No drandruff at all whenever i use it daily, which is the biggest issue when i transition over for me- my scalp typically gets pissed off and flaky lol. My hair being oily some days is no biggy, but when my scalp gets irritated I start worrying about extra hair fall.

Instead of using baking soda which on the long term is very bad for your hair, u can also use ayurvedic herbs such as shikakai, neem and some herbs to hydrate your hair like aloe vera powder then mix it with hot water and some rose water or add some honey to it and you're good to go
@kikihanssen8817
@kikihanssen8817 4 жыл бұрын
I use neem, shikakai, bhringaraj, hibiscus and aloe vera powder mixed with rose water and honey. And sometimes a acv rinse. Diy masks such as: greek yoghurt, honey, lemon, virgin olive oil and egg. But be aware, each herbs has its own way of use: Shikakai cleanses the hair Neem cleanses the hair and stimulates hairgrowth. Bhringaraj: strength, reduce hairloss and grey hair, preventing damaged dry frizzy hair and makes the hair manageable soft and smooth Hibiscus Aloe vera: calms and hydrates the hair Honey: softening and calming Also some powders are benifficial for cleansing ( shampoo) and others for conditioning the hair. Sometimes after my cleanse and condish i rinse my hair with acv and water. I dry my hair with a cotton shirt and when my hair is still a little moist i add some argan oil to my ends and i let it air dry. I do this routine once in a month to cleanse, the other days i spread my natural oils over my head with a brush and do some scritching and preening. But every skin and hairtype is different, i am doing this method for a couple of years now because of my sensitive skin and i just love it. But before i knew what really worked for me i had to try a lot. Also using eggs is a good one ( not weekly based bc of proteins) There are a lot of ways to a healthy scalp! Good luck on this journey ;)

I can relate to your excitement!!! I tried this too because of quarantine, and also because I had knee surgery so I couldn't really shower. It was pretty yucky for about 3 weeks. I hardly washed it at all though, and I have hard water. But then I saw this method for making a chickpea paste to wash with and am acv/lemon/water to rinse with. I've used that once a week for the last couple weeks. It helped to rinse off all the accumulated detox gunk and oil. Yesterday I realized my hair feels and looks so good! And I don't need to wash it, even after a week! It used to be I couldn't even go a couple days because of how greasy it is. It's awesome!!!

Here I go writing the same comment again😄. Hope it helps someone 😊 Here's what I been doing with my hair after I've stopped using shampoo. There's this medieval hair combing method in which you simply brush your hair everyday for a long time (by long time I mean at least 30 minutes 😅.🌿 If you have short hair then brushing less than 30 minutes might work just fine for you🌿) . First I divide my hair in two sections. Then starting with one section, comb the hair with a very wide teeth comb. After detangling I take a little bit of coconut oil( because that's what I have. you can use any oil you want) and apply that on the ends of my hair (because that part tends to get dry. 🌿 You can use more than a little bit if it's necessary for your hair 🌿). Next step is to start combing the hair with a comb which has thin gap between each teeth ( is used for getting rid of lice). I just comb my hair from root to tip. Each section of hair for at least 15 minutes(you might have to clean your comb one or two times in between if it gets too dirty). And after I am done with both section of my hair the shine and softness of the hair is unbelievable 😄(🌿 if you are someone who doesn't care about having shiny hair everyday then brushing your hair every two days should be alright. You can try going more days in between brushing your hair using this method. If you are living in a colder climate then you might not have to brush every day. Try to figure out what routine works out for you. Rest of the days just brush your hair how you normally would 🌿). There's no grease of flakes on the hair. It feels and looks like freshly washed hair. I don't use any other products on my hair. Simply use water for washing the hair. But I tend to make a bun every other day while showering because the tips of my hair tends to get dry if I wash them every day. But I make sure to get the roots of my hair wet and just massage them somehow with my fingers under running water 😅. Rest of the days I just wet my hair completely while massaging the roots a little. That's what I've been doing for the past threemonths. And everytime I tell someone that I haven't been using any shampoo,soap or conditioner the surprised look on their face is real😁. By the way, I live in a tropical climate and I have thigh length hair (2a/2b type hair)which is bleached from the mid length to tip. Never had to deal with the greasy feeling neither do I have split ends problem with my bleached hair because of this medieval combing method😊. Never had itching problem. My scalp smells just like my skin ☺️. So give it a try. You can just search medieval hair combing method on KZbin

there is a very simple explanation as to why your hair was easier to transition. its because shampoos and conditioners have silicones in, they are a film cover that coat your hair and that can only be removed with a clarifiying shampoo or in your case baking soda. it does the same thing. if you just stop shampooing your hair it will only get worse if you havent removed the silicones as some of them cannot be removed just with water. your gorgeous btw. i did the baking soda avc and now i don't need to shampoo. and now i have curls.

My hair felt actually clean and not even a bit oily.It makes sense, water and oil don´t mix that well together, but adding non-gluten type of flour it mixed well together and it washed all the oil from the hair. Hope this helps to anyone struggling with transition, and would like to skip it ;)

I´ve mixed chicpea flour: water in ratio of 1:1.5, more liquidy texture, so that I could easily spread it across my scalp and hair. I added the mixture on wet hair though. The hardest/longest part is to get all the flour out. :)

Use less ACV and your hair won't be sticky at scalp/roots and dry at ends. (IDK but if I add more ACV it makes my ends super dry)

I'm currently in my 8th week of no poo, and honestly my hair is still oily as fuck. I tried an apple cider vinegar ringe last week though, and it worked sooo well for me. I don't believe the water only method will be it for me. But I hope that I will be able to wash it once a week with the apple cider vinegar without my hair getting oily. I'm looking forward to your next update 😍😍

I had the same challenge! I have thick, oily hair. I had to do a potent baking soda wash on scalp, massage it in for a few minutes, then rinse. Then I did the ACV, and it’s going wonders!

I’ve been going since march! Great time to do it, I read using rye four is less harsh than bi carb soda (so therefore it doesnt over dry and then you over oil naturally), thats been working well for me. I do something quite similar to you, my hair was much worse than yours to begin but I i’ll persist!

I am doing a no poo method right now that uses rhassoul clay to wash my hair. I found it to be a really interesting idea. Washing my hair with dirt!!! LOL!!! I am also trying to only wash once a week. I started by piling my hair with castor oil though, which was maybe a mistake. The rhassoul clay didn’t wash it all out, so my hair was oily out the gate.

I haven't read all the comments so sorry if I'm repeating what someone else has said. Look up the damage caused by baking soda/bicarb. Most people have a really good experience for the first few weeks/months then their hair starts breaking off. It's extremely alkaline and our bodies are naturally slightly acidic. The shock to the hair shaft caused long term damage. Once in a while is probably fine but every week is probably gonna cause a lot of damage in the long run

I am using baking soda as shampoo and apple vinegar cider as conditioner already 3 weeks every 3rd day. I love it, no more itchy and flaky scalp, hair is softer and lighter. Once a week i also put for whole day before washing coconut oil. Only thing i dont like is my hair is getting static.

I wash my hair every 3to 4 days ( basically twice a week) and feel like I'm pushing it already , but I wash my daughters hair once a week and her hair is NEVER greasy , few times I only washed her hair once in two weeks and her hair is consistently good and not greasy . I am very tempted to just do with my hair the same I do with her but I am dreading the transition period.

Can you still use conditioner or oils on the ends? To make sure its not too dry
@melophi.
@melophi. 4 жыл бұрын
I’ve been doing it since 2019 (4,5 Months now) and the transitioning stage unfortunately didn’t go away. Only water, massaging and a lot of brushing. I did two rinses so far. I wish the fluffiness - non oily state had come or I hope at least it will come soon but my hair might just not work with this bare method :/ but I’m very confident going out in tied up hair!

Medea Milenkovic do you have hard water? If so I highly suggest getting a shower filter. I use stone stream shower head and aquabliss shower filter. Very important to but from the company so you don’t get fakes. Note that there will be some oilyness but that’s natural. Initially hair volume will go down but it’ll come back and be fuller. Also how are you massaging and for how long. I suggest a good firm massage for 4-5 minutes. Trust me when I say this will work. Me and my gf(I’m a guy) have very different hair types. She’s from China and I’m African and Native American. I have kinky and curly hair she has very straight hair. I do her hair care the same as my own and the results are great. She had alopecia and hair was always frizzy but after switching we both saw incredible hair gain on top of improved texture. Both our hair was dull now it looks like we hit up a salon and barber daily. Also try the inversion method. Another thing to not is unfortunately badly damaged hair may need to be cut away initially. Science behind that is split hair will continue to split unless cut away. However after the hair is healthy and strong you won’t need to trim again because breakage won’t happen. If you want a good shampoo because you feel no poo is just not for you I highly recommend soap berrys. Can’t remember the brand but the ingredients are probably the best you can get from all that I’ve seen which is a ton. Good luck

I had similar ideas to use the current situation :) So I finally dared to shave my hair to 6 mm (it was as long as yours) at Easter and started washing it with water only. After a couple of says, I also started the 10 days no washing at all thing I had seen in other YT videos and I was really surprised, because I had imagined my scalp to become a lot more disgusting than it actually was. The only thing now is that I've got dandruffs. I've already had problems with that in the past, but could get rid of them using an appropriate shampoo. As this is not an option anymore, I found the BS/ACV method and want to try it now. Hope it helps. I'd love to stay without shampoo forever. It's so liberating :) Thanks for this video, it really helped giving me an insight in how to use these two ingredients.

@@MaryellenHacko Thank you :) I actually like it. Initially it was more for practical reasons, because I always hated brushing my hair and having the loose ones lying around everywhere. Plus I wanted to let go of the expectation that women "have to" have long hair. However, it can get pretty cold. We had a couple of cold days after Easter and my head was freezing. So I'm thinking of keeping it short for the summer and then letting it grow again. I just used baking powder for the first time and can't see any reduction in dandruffs, but I need to be patient of course ;) Unfortunately I didn't have enough ACV to make the rinse.
