I’m Indigenous so our hair is obviously very important to us. My Great Grandmother had breast cancer before I was born and lost all her hair and it never grew back the same way again. My family would always told me that I got my long, thick hair from her before she lost it to the treatment. I have lots of memories of sitting at her knee while she ran her fingers through my hair, braiding and unbraiding it over and over. Taking care of my long hair now feels like tending to her memory.

Oh my goodness! Finally someone who acknowledges that she hasn't set foot in a hair salon in over 10 years!! It must be around 20 years since I stopped going to hair salons to trim my hair because the same thing happened to me! I had my hair cut in unwanted ways and/or shorter than I asked for, especially knowing its tendency to grow frizzier and more difficult to manage the shorter it is (but then I guess it was in the hairdresser's interest to do that so I'd come back... which didn't happen actually). I used to trust my mum to trim my hair but she's getting old and has sight issues and I haven't actually trimmed my hair in probably over 2 years. I only use natural products on in (henna, coconut oil, essential oils mixed with henna or oil and natural shampoos) and let my hair dry on its own. It's obviously not as long as yours (I wish ... ) but I find my hair healthier now that I am in my forties than it was in my twenties. I wear it loose most of the time and happy with the way it looks even though I suppose many a hairdresser would want to bob it out so it looks more fashionable and neat in their eyes :))

I am like you Cocotte2518. I only trusted my mother and my husband to trim my hair but neither have been able to help for a while because of health or travel issues (she lives in a different country). So I have not had a trim for about 4 years now and it's fine with me. As for salons, I have not been in one since 2005 and that was an exceptional visit because on that occasion I wanted my hair dyed back to my natural colour and cut short. I normally wear my hair very long (currently hip length) and I've had a very bad experience with professional hairdressers too. First the hairdresser forced me to have my hair washed even though I had told him I had washed my hair immediately before coming to the salon with the shampoo and conditioner I trust. He said he had to wash my hair because it was the procedure, they don't do a trim without a wash. Then he was drying my hair on hot setting and I asked him to use the cold setting. He refused. He litterally said "I am not standing here all day drying your hair." And then I was charged something in excess of 40 pounds for all that humiliation, a big sum for a student in early 2000s.

I am deeply convinced air quality and smog has a lot to do with hair greasiness. I notice in the winter, when there's more smog in my industrial town, my hair gets greasy really fast. So, by living in the countryside, there's much more clean air and thus hair doesn't get as greasy.
@rickshaw19714 жыл бұрын
And water quality. Ours is really hard and alkaline and caused horror build-up whatever else I used. Have to use a citric acid rinse to get it out, and the main reason I only wash my hair about every two weeks is to not expose it to more hard water minerals than necessary.
@PrettyShepherd4 жыл бұрын

This is a gross comparison, but I think you are right. I cooked hamburgers indoors, on the stove, and the amount of grease that got EVERYWHERE - I don't mean spatters, I mean on the walls, and even inside the microwave door above the stovetop - I am freaking out about it. It's weird how actual grease - and so much of it - can get in the AIR.
@wolveshowling264 жыл бұрын
The dry air from heaters probably also speeds up the process of more grease production on the scalp? At least that's my experience with the winter times!
@KatjeKat864 жыл бұрын
That's interesting my hair's always worse in the summer but is unlikely we live in the same place. Also living in the country doesn't protect you against smog, because where I used to live would get smog from the city and it was miles and miles away. Were talking like 500 miles away there was a big city and it produced smog that would settle over the countryside I lived in.

The great thing about curly hair is that I can go a month without washing it, and it will never look greasy (except for right after an oil treatment). I tend to wash mine once a fortnight, to once every three weeks. I’d prefer once a fortnight, but I’m disabled, so sometimes it’s actually four or five weeks, because the thought of the pain and effort means that it’s easier to just wash my body and leave my hair for some other time. It’s been almost four weeks since I last washed it, it’s currently up in a bun, and it looks perfectly presentable. And to keep it smelling nice, I use a little nice smelling oil on the ends at least once a week, or I spritz perfume in the air and let it settle on my hair. I think the lack of natural oils is why my hair never gets to smelling bad. Whereas my daughter has a very oily scalp, and her hair starts to smell after two days.

Hi Eliana. it didn't take long. I'm thinking about 4-6 months. If that. I just kept making the days more and more in between my washes. I also spoke w/my Hair Sylest friend who was trained in Europe. She taught me to only shampoo my scalp 2-3 times; not my long stresses.Letting the sudsy water do some wash of the long hair. Then no conditioner on my scalp; only once do I put a dab of conditioner in the length/stresses as I do my 2nd or 3rd scalp shampoo wash. Post wash product also never ever goes on my scalp; only on the length of my hair. So basically, I only use soaps on my scalp & I only use oils/product on the stresses/length of my hair. This saves me so much money since I only use shampoo, conditioner & products once a month.

So, in the black hair community this first day process is called the Pre Poo process. You apply a good amount of oil (olive oil is a fav) cover with a plastic cap and wash as normal the following day. I actually discovered the 1 month wash option a year back by accident, due to Covid lol. My hair went from mid back to waist length...In Haiti, our people have been using castor oil for hair and other use for centuries. We actually have our native grown Haitian castor oil that also works for joint and various other pain as a topical application. Cold water rinse is a good habit. It locks the cuticles leaving the awesome conditioner to do its job. This accounts for your awesome silver shine. So the key of less manipulative practices overall and oil use works for ALL types of hair.

a little tip: it is best to apply the oil to damp hair to get the maximum effect. Oils lock in moisture in the hair (also good for naturally curly hair, which is prone to dryness). E.g.: if you have very dry hair like me, then there is no moisture to lock in (without moisturizing the hair beforehand). Additional: my ends die and break from buns. I can recommend braids (braid onlx when your hair is dry)

For a longtime my hair was thin, lifeless, falling out, I'd get sores on my head. I kept it in a pixie cut, because everytime I grew it to my shoulders it would just fall out and be so thin that old scars on my head shown out like flags. One day I discovered I had a wheat sensitivity, like, eating wheat literally causes my joints to lock up like cement. So I stopped eating it. Now, two years after my last cut (with one 2inch trim to cut off nasty split ends) my hair is thick(ish, as thick as my genes will allow), slightly curly, and all the way to the bottom of my ribcage. Diet is definitely the #1 thing to consider, before other factors. If I have my food even slightly contaminated by wheat, I'll get sores and a good chunk of hair will fall out. I have so many uneven baby hairs from the fluctuation in my health. I also use a chlorine filter for my shower, which works miracles. I didn't know I had naturally curly hair, until I installed the filter. And the filter prevents buildup of chemicals and minerals in my hair. I only need to wash with shampoo if I have deadskin buildup on my scalp.

But she rinses it with water more often I would guess? I had a friend who had the best, thick hair and he did that by never washing it with shampoo but rinsing with water only. It took him about a year to regain the natural balance of the hair keeping itself healthy. It's pretty logical really.. The body can take care of itself very well if you let it do its thing. The oils your scalp secretes are there to keep it healthy. It's because we disrupt that natural balance with shampoo and all kinds of chemicals etc that your scalp starts over producing the grease.
@glowyboo3 жыл бұрын
The thing is that it doesn't work for everybody. Because of Covid, I "trained" my hair and washed it every 7-10 days for A YEAR, and nothing changed! It is still greasy as hell after 3 days! I thought I was doing something wrong since this was what everyone swore by, but actually, even though yes the natural oils are good for the hair, our bodies does accumulate a lot of bacteria and other stuff so it is not always good for the hair overtime just because it's natural lol. Not washing the hair often enough(which would be genetically dependent on how much oil one produces individually) can and will lead to dandruff, fungi growth, scalp irritation, and even hairloss because the pores gets clogged. I finally gave up training my hair and my hair has been perfecrly fine and looks way more healthy, though my scalp is way more sensitive and i have to wash my hair more often than before I started😬

I have hair down to the bottom of my butt and I mostly watched this video out of a sense of solidarity because I also wash my hair once a month, sometimes going even longer in winter,. I do a lot of the things mentioned in the video but I learned some new things to try so thanks! My hair used to be nearly knee length but I went to get a trim just before Covid was a thing and had the same experience you did of having it cut MUCH shorter than requested. Grrrrrr. When people ask me how to grow their hair long I start by telling them stop getting it trimmed the recommended every 6 - 8 weeks. Just get it trimmed to even things out as it grows when it starts to look scraggly and they nod. When I next tell them to gradually space out washing their hair until they are washing it no more than once a week and then see if they can go even longer than that they usually cringe and I can tell they are either reconsidering growing their hair out or if I'm a reliable source or not. When I get to my point 3 about nutrition they tune in again so at least they get some good out of the conversation. Next time I should point them to this video. I see in the comments people talking about being asked if they plan to donate their hair. FYI to anyone reading this, at least in the States, the most commonly known hair donation charity, Locks of Love, has been shown to be a scam. They do not make wigs, they sell the hair, and they don't give children free wigs. They will SELL them a wig at what is supposed to be a discount if the parent is willing to wade through an application process that seems to be designed to get them to give up. The best advice I've heard is to sell your hair and then donate the money to a pediatric cancer charity. Less processing costs for the charity and you will know up front if your hair is usable to make wigs with. Even Locks of Love admits that most of the submissions they get end up in the trash because the hair is not suitable for wig making for some reason even if the person who donated tried to abide by their guidelines.
@catlover12102 жыл бұрын
That rings the bell. That reminds me of posts and videos I had bumped into previously that we should be more conscious of those so-called "charity organizations ". The more mega international the organizations, the more crap they are. They are abusing our kindness with a lot of crappy deals to make money, in short, our kindness never exactly go to the poor and needy, or the real environmental cause, or the extinct animals. The money goes into somebody pockets and worst still, some organizations are just a camouflage to hide some real criminal activities like child trafficking or child sex. If you want to help someone, do it yourself. Pass him or her your donation directly is much more direct and meaningful.

For those of you who are wondering: I asked my mum (she's a hairdresser) why so many of her colleagues end up cutting more hair length than required by their customers and she told me that making a precise haircut is much easier if you cut a larger amount of hair length and they usually go for precision rather than retaining length. Update (2023): I switched to Viori products and shampoo/conditioner once a week. Their products are very natural, so weekly shampooing is no problem for my hair. Tsubaki/camellia oil every night after brushing and before putting into loose braids for sleep. Hair is now past Classic/butt length and growing thicker! I stopped trying to shampoo monthly because my hair gets really itchy which aggravates my eczema (made worse due to dust allergies). I need the extra moisture on my scalp & to clear out my scalp from dust, so shampooing less frequently even with boar bristle brushing isn't enough to maintain my scalp health to prevent eczema. Old comment (2022): I've been going 2 weeks without washing, but you've inspired me to go for a month between washes! A word of caution concerning neck pain: I had hip-length hair and got neck problems because of wearing it in a braid on the same side too often. Got into the habit of tensing and cracking the opposite side of my neck. I say this about anything regarding your beauty & health, whether it be bathing, skin care, brushing teeth, hair, nails, eating, etc. It is as they say “too much of anything can eventually be bad for you.” & I do mean ANYTHING! The biggest well kept secret is….leaving it alone, that’s right, take a break from it big or small break just do it, u won’t regret it. Following the latest beauty trends consistently will damage & throw off your ph balance. Learn deprivation in every aspect of life. At 42 years young I can confidently yet humbly say that I have the softest evenly toned skin & healthy white smile with all 32 teeth intact. I look 20 years younger because something that a wise old neighbor whom lived to be 118 but didn’t look a day over 65 left me with a gem of knowledge that stuck with me from the ripe young age of 16. Take a break from everything, fast, deprive yourself in order to preserve yourself. Has been my way of life since I started applying her wisdom at 25. Works wonders! Just forget about it, leave it be & you’ll see for yourselves how the things that society has been taught to shun+shame are the very things that will add longevity & youthfulness to your existence. Really not a big secret but is for most a big step to take when changing the mindset of the majority.

I wash my hair way more often but for that itchiness in between washes, spraying on a rosemary decoction really helps! You just boil a couple of rosemary twigs in half a liter to a liter of water for 20 minutes, let it cool off and keep it in a spray bottle. Rosemary is a preservative so it will keep a good while!
@blowitoutyourcunt76752 жыл бұрын
I use that with a couple drops of rosemary oil. In a pinch though, I've used yellow listerine - it was the only thing I could find at that Pharmacy in the Philippines that had a recognizable plant extract in it - thymol from the Thyme plant! It killed the itching quick and oddly enough after a month of using that bottle of Listerine on my scalp, my dandruff went away and never came back! Apparently Listerine used to be a surgical disinfectant back in the day and when I learned that, it clicked what had happened! I still use the Rosemary tisane and essential oil for hair growth though! Cheers doll!

After my mother chopped my thigh-length hair off when I was 10, leaving me with an awkward afro, I've had maybe 5 "trims" over the last 20 years in an effort to manage the split ends while keeping it long. I see all my mom friends cutting off their hair because it's "too much work," and with baby #2 arriving next month I've been so worried I'd be tempted to do the same thing. I'd already switched to bar soap and had been playing with headscarves for a while, but since seeing this video I've bought more scarves so I can wear them every day and am down to brushing once per week and washing my hair every 3 weeks or so. I wouldn't have thought to try it were it not for this video, and it's proving to be sustainable for me! I'm also getting compliments on seeming much more put together (no more frizzy pigtails), and it's so much less work. I used to wash it every day because it would get gross and oily. Over a summer when I didn’t have school, I tried to transition it to washing every 2, then 3 days. Now, I apply a homemade hair powder about every 3-4 days, apply to roots of hair and scalp, give a nice fingertip massage, and comb out extra powder and loose hairs. The powder (made with corn starch mostly) soaks up any excess oils that may be there and adds tons of volume to my hair. Is always wear it up, twisted and pinned or braided, and it looks awesome. Practice one or two hairstyles that you really like, and it only takes like 10 minutes to get it ready for the day and usually looks fabulous. Cheers!

Until you know someone crossed the ocean and ruined everything (castilians) “Mexican” food to the most basic person is tacos and burritos. Yes the tortilla is a huge indigenous food. @@Yulia.chandrika I wash my hair once a month... In the beginning it was oily, but if you just keep going you will see that it changes..The first time it ill be super oily.. but keep doing it as longs as you can. St least 2 weks. The next time - try to keep going even longer. .After a couple rounds it will be fine.. My hair is never oily and it actually smells good. BUT - there is ONE very important thing... If you eat a lot of oily and fat food you will struggle.. If your skin gets oily etc.. it willl also affect your hair. I hope you can make it work because it is very good for the health of your hair and yuor body.

I’ve been trying to space out my washing for over 2 years now and my hair has never looked or felt worse. I don’t heat style, I use the same care method I did when washing everyday… and my hair looks hideous. And its health has deteriorated. I’m going back to washing daily / every other day. So please to anyone watching, it is DEPENDENT ON YOUR OWN HAIR AND NOT ONE SIZE FITS ALL.

This is how I discovered the true texture of my hair after 16 years without shape: it happened when I cut it, I stopped ironing and using chemical straightening; We went on vacation to the river, and having soaked it so long (and not washing it so often) I noticed it starting to ripple from the root. In my family they have wavy or curly hair, and I am happy to finally know how to take care of mine (it is wavy and now it is also very long as ever!🌞).

My Mom did this all her life, it was a "true event" in our household when she finally decided to comb or wash it, and she always had the most beautiful, thick and long hair. She got compliments everywhere she went. Now I follow in her footsteps :-)

If someone is concerned with reducing frizz I can suggest switching towels for a cotton T-shirt, I have frizz prone, wavy, thick hair and I've seen it really make a difference. It soaks up even more water than terry cloth. I also avoid rubbing my hair.

I love this video. Washing your hair every day is stripping your scalp and folicled lf necessary oils and such. I try to wash my hair once a week or every other week, but there are products that are healthy to keep your scalp moisturized and to repair your hair that I'll use in between. My hair is about half as long as hers. And hair care is so important!
@JCX-97 ай бұрын
Do you perspire? If you do the stuff stays on your scalp plus our skin sheds too so we get buildup that can suffocate the hair follicles. I think at least once a week wash is a good thing.
@pocket.universe7 ай бұрын
That build up usually comes from using damaging shampoos. Shampoo and conditioners are what creates that build up so people think it's normal. If you're actually taking care of your hair properly then you won't experience that. Also that's what combs are for to shake any dirt or particulates. It also depends on what the climate is where you live because you may have to moisturize your hair more often in a dry place. So it's different for everyone and not everyone's scalp is the same so I'm sorry you get that build up. I know it can be frustrating to deal with
@pocket.universe7 ай бұрын
But also wtf do I know. I only know what I've researched for myself and as I said every one is different and has different reactions to different types of health care so generalizing isn't helpful. The only reason I am able to wash my hair once a week without having crap building up is bc I do the work.
@maj13953 жыл бұрын
I live downtown so the pollution does make my hair dirty, so I rinse it around once or sometimes twice a week. A rinse using very little water. I can see the dirt come out of my hair with the water. This only started when I moved to the city. But the rinse actually helps the oil from my scalp go to the ends of my hair.

My family is genetically disposed to short hair and my Mum always subscribed to the 'cutting your hair makes it longer' thing 😬. Finally have hair past my shoulders after 7 years of growth 😅😭
@sofitocyn1003 жыл бұрын
There's not such thing as genetically disposed to short hair. You said yourself that your mom believe in that myth
@Whatevsbabes3 жыл бұрын
@@sofitocyn100 Yes there is. All hair has a lifecycle and a time to it. This is why all the hair on your body doesn’t continue to grow indefinitely. It stops, falls out and restarts after a few weeks/months. Head hair just has a longer cycle, but not everyone’s cycle is the same, nor is the growth rate.
@richessencetalks21863 жыл бұрын
One thing I found out: If a mother had a child when she has had short hair for a long time, that child will have a harder time growing longer, but it's not impossible. It's going to be like breaking a generational curse. If the same mother had another child with her hair long, that child will have an easier time growing its hair out than their sibling.

Majestic hair! I used to have such hair- suffered an incredible trauma, and lost it. I sometimes feel grateful to have any left, and sometimes very sad. Yours is absolutely beautiful.
@megan1663 жыл бұрын
Same here! Is yours a recent trauma? My hair used to be as thick as anchor ropes, curly/wavy, and halfway down my thigh, but I lost a loved one four years ago, couldn't eat for months, and it all fell out. Now it's thin and short and I miss it. I wonder if it will ever return. It makes me sad thinking about it, but my routine used to look pretty similar to hers when my hair was healthy. She may have something. Recently, I've been washing it more often. Maybe I should stop.

The unsolicited advice bit is so spot on for me! My hair was butt length for several years in my early teens and i literally had people try to guilt me into donating it! I also had a girl at school go on about how she doesn't understand why i couldn't put my hair up with one of those really thin hair elastics because her hair was just as thick and she had no issue with them. But her hair was like half as long and completely fried so it weighed nothing!

Fellow thick haired gall. I wish I could do updos, too. I have the same issue with my hair breaking hair ties. It also slides out of them. It is very uncooperative. Lol I sometimes layer mine out a bit to keep most of the length but keep it manageable and less heavy. Makes it tangle less and adds a little volume and movement.

I'm also a lady with long, luscious hair and I love it :) My hair is not to my knees, but it is past my hips. It's straight-wavy and not overly thick. Based solely on my anecdotal evidence of what works for my hair, I keep it as natural as possible. I wear it mostly braided or in a bun, including to sleep. I do not use dye. I do not use tools that employ heat. I rarely use styling products. I avoid harsh shampoo and conditioner. I towel dry only. I do not brush when wet. I braid and trim the bottom ends and dust the split ends as needed. I found that Tudor women rarely washed their hair due to unsafe water sources, I wanted to know what they did to keep long hair clean. I learned that's where the "wives tale" about brushing your hair 100 strokes comes from (it also explains why they chose rain water or running rivers for bathing). They used very fine-toothed combs and made sure to thoroughly comb and exfoliate their scalps and loosen debris. This was done twice a day and followed up with a boar hair brush to remove dirt and spread natural oils down the hair. When I incorporated the twice daily combing and brushing, I found my dry scalp and flakes completely cleared up, eliminating the need for a dandruff shampoo. On wash day, I oil with a warm mix of essential oils and coconut, castor and olive oils, though not heavily, and usually just for an hour or so. I like the tip to get oil at the grocery store. I try to apply the general rule that if it's safe IN my body, it's safe ON my body. I find one thorough shampoo is enough to get out my oil treatment. I condition very generously on very wet hair and comb through. I have the rest of my bath/shower then rinse out the conditioner last. For leave-in conditioner, I use 1/2 distilled water, 1/2 aloe vera gel with essential oils. I wear my hair down after washing until dry.

My Update: About six months after this comment, I stopped using all commercial products on my hair, and I make everything natural at home. Oddly, I am on a three-week cycle with my wash days lol I still pre oil for about an hour, with my home made hair oil. It's a mix of carrier oils, essential oils, and herbs. It took a bit of playing around to find what was best for my own hair, but a bit of reading to see which oils/herbs do what, and away you go. Wash is now a 2:1 Rhassoul/Benzonite clay mix, with diluted ACV and a bit of my oil. Rinse is diluted ACV. I follow up with rice water as a detangler/leave-in and oil the ends a bit if necessary. The rest of my routine has remained the same, i.e.: mostly gentle detangling with a natural brush (bamboo), followed with a Boar bristle brush, and protective styles. My hair has never looked or felt better at classical (just past my bum) length, and I love it all the more. ETA: Annual cost: Roughly $250USD - what some people pay for one trip to the salon.

I love the disclaimer in the video! I have long hair, and people always ask me what I do for my hair long, shiny, or healthy. I always tell them that besides getting my hair trimmed, a few hair masks here and there, and avoiding putting too much stress on the hair, I keep it pretty standard, and I don't have an excessive routine for my hair. However, I also always tell them that it's different for everyone and what might work for me might not work for you, and some people get disappointed or upset that I'm "withholding " hair care secrets. p.s: I love your content.
