I’m Indigenous so our hair is obviously very important to us. My Great Grandmother had breast cancer before I was born and lost all her hair and it never grew back the same way again. My family would always told me that I got my long, thick hair from her before she lost it to the treatment. I have lots of memories of sitting at her knee while she ran her fingers through my hair, braiding and unbraiding it over and over. Taking care of my long hair now feels like tending to her memory.

I am Native American and only cut my hair in Mourning. Four years ago I cut my braids off at my ears when my Beloved Brother died. It is nearly to my waist now. Your video validated the care I put into my hair. I only wash my hair once a week, sometimes longer. I use a natural boar bristle brush and never, ever brush or comb it wet. My hair is baby fine and it's amazingly thick. It's my crowning glory and I will do whatever it takes to keep it healthy and growing longer.

Hi Eliana. it didn't take long. I'm thinking about 4-6 months. If that. I just kept making the days more and more in between my washes. I also spoke w/my Hair Sylest friend who was trained in Europe. She taught me to only shampoo my scalp 2-3 times; not my long stresses.Letting the sudsy water do some wash of the long hair. Then no conditioner on my scalp; only once do I put a dab of conditioner in the length/stresses as I do my 2nd or 3rd scalp shampoo wash. Post wash product also never ever goes on my scalp; only on the length of my hair. So basically, I only use soaps on my scalp & I only use oils/product on the stresses/length of my hair. This saves me so much money since I only use shampoo, conditioner & products once a month.

They just from a biological stand point are the pinnacle of beauty based of symmetry, and phenotypes that beautiful. Very long beautiful hair, beautiful eyes, beautiful skin ect. Maybe you think you do not have more beautiful woman than any other place because you are desensitized to it. Ask any man anywhere in the world and they will agree with me. You people have amazing enviable genetics. Do not be shy about it. Everyone is not born equally beautiful. They get picked to be models for a reason- their beauty. It is uncanny. Abnormally high amount of people in Eastern Bloc who are just born perfectly beautiful. It really is not fair but no one ever said life was fair. They have beauty privilege. It is not their fault. I had shoulder length hair when I went to prison at 19... I didn't come home until I was 28 but the point of the story is that once I got to prison I started washing my hair once a month as well and my main reason is because there was always such long lines for the shower and you don't want to be the one always taking a long time in the shower and then a bunch of women complaining so I just started washing my hair once a month and the only hair product we had in there was Pink oil lotion instead of hair sprays and gel, so I got in the habit of once my hair grew out a little more putting a little dab of pink oil lotion in my hair and wrapping up in a bun everyday and just washing it once a month.. by the time I came home my hair was long and strong and thick and down to the bottom of my butt... And now still to this day I do not use any hair products as far as gel or hairspray.. I still use Pink oil to this day and wash my hair once a month. African Americans are really the ones it's originally made for and they had it in prison because they don't have products for them to keep there hair conditioned like they need. So that's how I started using it and I was amazed by the time I came home how long and healthy and strong my hair was. Definitely give it a try. @maynot
@maynot 6 ай бұрын
@@K_anita.if it gets oily every wash anyway, you should let it lie for a couple days without washing it and see if it looks better with time. Use dry shampoo sometimes instead of wetting it every day. It'll make your hair look full and fresh without conditioning or blowdrying. Though I actually use powders and hair clays instead of dry shampoo, which would leave white stuff in my scalp. Texturizing powder will feel the same on your hair as spray shampoo but leaves no cakey gunk on your head that I can tell. Also make sure that you give your hair some protein every now and again, such as putting coconut oil on your head right before shampooing. Restrict conditioning to only the ends and not the scalp. I switched to spray conditioner when I started using the blowdryer more, I spray a bit on when I get out of the shower and comb it, and it changed the game. If you have frizzy hair, try putting a gel on your wet conditioned hair with a wide tooth comb and gently dabbing your locks dry with a cotton t-shirt or microfiber towel. After drying, put your head upside down and run your hands through the gel cast to get your hair looking normal. Using a protein mask weekly is good for most hair types, you can make them from household ingredients or buy a hair pack anywhere. After using a mask and shampooing, give your hair an apple cider vinegar rinse. Make sure it's diluted with water. In general, using yogurt on your scalp does wonders for just about every issue. It leaves the scalp feeling really clean and good.

@@Joyride37 I personally don't use a conditioner when I use a mask and acv because my hair is extremely weak and fine, despite being wavy/curly, and the mask/acv conditions it for me. a little tip: it is best to apply the oil to damp hair to get the maximum effect. Oils lock in moisture in the hair (also good for naturally curly hair, which is prone to dryness). E.g.: if you have very dry hair like me, then there is no moisture to lock in (without moisturizing the hair beforehand). Additional: my ends die and break from buns. I can recommend braids (braid onlx when your hair is dry)

Oh my goodness! Finally someone who acknowledges that she hasn't set foot in a hair salon in over 10 years!! It must be around 20 years since I stopped going to hair salons to trim my hair because the same thing happened to me! I had my hair cut in unwanted ways and/or shorter than I asked for, especially knowing its tendency to grow frizzier and more difficult to manage the shorter it is (but then I guess it was in the hairdresser's interest to do that so I'd come back... which didn't happen actually). I used to trust my mum to trim my hair but she's getting old and has sight issues and I haven't actually trimmed my hair in probably over 2 years. I only use natural products on in (henna, coconut oil, essential oils mixed with henna or oil and natural shampoos) and let my hair dry on its own. It's obviously not as long as yours (I wish ... ) but I find my hair healthier now that I am in my forties than it was in my twenties. I wear it loose most of the time and happy with the way it looks even though I suppose many a hairdresser would want to bob it out so it looks more fashionable and neat in their eyes :))

I am like you Cocotte2518. I only trusted my mother and my husband to trim my hair but neither have been able to help for a while because of health or travel issues (she lives in a different country). So I have not had a trim for about 4 years now and it's fine with me. As for salons, I have not been in one since 2005 and that was an exceptional visit because on that occasion I wanted my hair dyed back to my natural colour and cut short. I normally wear my hair very long (currently hip length) and I've had a very bad experience with professional hairdressers too. First the hairdresser forced me to have my hair washed even though I had told him I had washed my hair immediately before coming to the salon with the shampoo and conditioner I trust. He said he had to wash my hair because it was the procedure, they don't do a trim without a wash. Then he was drying my hair on hot setting and I asked him to use the cold setting. He refused. He litterally said "I am not standing here all day drying your hair." And then I was charged something in excess of 40 pounds for all that humiliation, a big sum for a student in early 2000s.

So, in the black hair community this first day process is called the Pre Poo process. You apply a good amount of oil (olive oil is a fav) cover with a plastic cap and wash as normal the following day. I actually discovered the 1 month wash option a year back by accident, due to Covid lol. My hair went from mid back to waist length...In Haiti, our people have been using castor oil for hair and other use for centuries. We actually have our native grown Haitian castor oil that also works for joint and various other pain as a topical application. Cold water rinse is a good habit. It locks the cuticles leaving the awesome conditioner to do its job. This accounts for your awesome silver shine. So the key of less manipulative practices overall and oil use works for ALL types of hair.

I’m a curly/wavy and am learning all kinds of new things about actually taking care of my hair and that shit’s springier than I ever thought it was! I’ve abused the crap out of my hair for so long. It’s taking time to recover but finding it’s pattern finally. Washing too often, beating it up with a brush dry and wet, shredding it out by the handful while detangling. I only ever used castor oil on my dry scalp every once in awhile, but thanks to your advice, I’m going to start “pre-poo’ing” and using the castor oil all over the night before I wash! Thank you! ❤️🙌

I’ve been able to get my hair wash routine to once every ten days. I have keratosis and my scalp needs washing more than the average person. After 10 days the itching is out of control . My mom used to bathe me as a child twice a day! (Not good). I slowly worked my way up to 10 days. I also found out I was deficient in iron, vit B’s and vit. D. When I started supplementing I noticed my hair grew faster. I have used castor oil packs for uterine pain but I’ll be using it before shampooing also. Thanks for the tip! Oh and vitamin D comes in oil capsules. I break them open and add it too my face and body lotion. I noticed a huge difference in the length of my eyelashes and fullness of my eyebrows.

Thank you for adding genetics to the outcome. I know my moms side and dads are thin haired, BUT i think modern routine and diets adds to the thinning and can be countered and remedied, within reason. I look forward to trying it out. I also always found it intriguing to look at photos from 1950"s and prior and the young ladies all had enormous luxurious thick hair without exception. That has dwindled steadily through the decades...very telling!!!

I say this about anything regarding your beauty & health, whether it be bathing, skin care, brushing teeth, hair, nails, eating, etc. It is as they say “too much of anything can eventually be bad for you.” & I do mean ANYTHING! The biggest well kept secret is….leaving it alone, that’s right, take a break from it big or small break just do it, u won’t regret it. Following the latest beauty trends consistently will damage & throw off your ph balance. Learn deprivation in every aspect of life. At 42 years young I can confidently yet humbly say that I have the softest evenly toned skin & healthy white smile with all 32 teeth intact. I look 20 years younger because something that a wise old neighbor whom lived to be 118 but didn’t look a day over 65 left me with a gem of knowledge that stuck with me from the ripe young age of 16. Take a break from everything, fast, deprive yourself in order to preserve yourself. Has been my way of life since I started applying her wisdom at 25. Works wonders! Just forget about it, leave it be & you’ll see for yourselves how the things that society has been taught to shun+shame are the very things that will add longevity & youthfulness to your existence. Really not a big secret but is for most a big step to take when changing the mindset of the majority.

The great thing about curly hair is that I can go a month without washing it, and it will never look greasy (except for right after an oil treatment). I tend to wash mine once a fortnight, to once every three weeks. I’d prefer once a fortnight, but I’m disabled, so sometimes it’s actually four or five weeks, because the thought of the pain and effort means that it’s easier to just wash my body and leave my hair for some other time. It’s been almost four weeks since I last washed it, it’s currently up in a bun, and it looks perfectly presentable. And to keep it smelling nice, I use a little nice smelling oil on the ends at least once a week, or I spritz perfume in the air and let it settle on my hair. I think the lack of natural oils is why my hair never gets to smelling bad. Whereas my daughter has a very oily scalp, and her hair starts to smell after two days.

I get all of the same unsolicited advice. I haven't cut my hair for 25 years. Every now and then, when someone asks to see my hair down, I will take it down for them. They usually immediately gasp and mention how beautiful it is. Then they tell me that theirs would never grow so long and beautiful. The third thing they say is, "you should cut it!" It makes no sense at all! My husband & I both love my hair long. The onlooker obviously loves it long. Then, they tell me to cut it so it can look as ordinarily boring as theirs does. Smh.

I am deeply convinced air quality and smog has a lot to do with hair greasiness. I notice in the winter, when there's more smog in my industrial town, my hair gets greasy really fast. So, by living in the countryside, there's much more clean air and thus hair doesn't get as greasy.

I discovered that not washing my hair often on “accident” , I got ran over by a truck and both my legs and arms were broken I was in bed for 8 months and we had to do wipes and sponge baths when I was a little more recovered we started washing my hair again , my hair was messed up before the accident , lots of hair coloring and heat tools , didn’t pay attention to the process of my hair healing till I finally got my arm casts off I had gotten a shower and I asked my husband for a hair brush and as I brushed I was like shit what’s this !!? My hair was almost reaching my waist 😮before the accident my hair was shoulder length, so it was a lot of miraculous growing over night I guess . My thinking was that the not washing my hair for a long time and letting it absorb my scalp oil all the way to the ends helped to heal the dryness and cured my scalp dryness as well . I took vitamins and supplements Every day and I feel those vitamins helped too . In the end I realized how absorbed we are as a society by buying hair products and doing treatments because we feel is the right thing to do… it’s just a big fat NO ! I used to do olaplex treatments every 2 weeks in the salon , used oribe 60 dlls shampoo and conditioner and my hair was dead … no growth no improvement at all. The not washing often and using natural inexpensive products has been the best for my hair , don’t believe that everything they sell is the best thing for your hair , sometimes it just needs a rest and a little oil .

It took him about a year to regain the natural balance of the hair keeping itself healthy. It's pretty logical really.. The body can take care of itself very well if you let it do its thing. The oils your scalp secretes are there to keep it healthy. It's because we disrupt that natural balance with shampoo and all kinds of chemicals etc that your scalp starts over producing the grease.

I have noticed 5 similarities. 1 You all don’t wash your hair every day, only once a week or less. 2 You all use oils to moisturize the older/longer parts of your hair. 3 You all finger comb on a more regular basis and save gentle de-tanglers, boar brush, combs for occasional use. 4 You all use protective hair styles for most occasions and sleeping. 5 You all avoid modern hair products and use food products closer to nature

My hair got so much healthier when I started washing my hair less and using castor oil, and a mint+rosemary oil usually a small amount the morning after I wash, then a lot the day before I wash. I also use a boar bristle brush to move the oils around more. My hair used to be so frizzy! Now I have my loose natural curls back, and my hair is so much shiner and comfortable.

The addition of oil 24 hours before washing was a new one to me, but then my hair is naturally kind of oily (or has been since the years of being told to wash my hair three times a week by my mother), so my usual haircare routine involves dry shampoo, leave-in conditioners, lots of brushing, and only washing it every six weeks or so when I... need to get my hair ready to refresh the color at my roots. 😅 It does mean the shampoos and conditioners I have last a nice long time.

Isn't it funny how everyone always has an opinion about someone else's hair? I always get comments about how my "hair is too long" or "I should cut it", like it somehow affects these people how I choose to have my own hair, some people get really invested and almost try to demand me to cut it, or insult me, just because I don't want a Karen cut. It's interesting how people think it's okay to say things like that when it comes to hair, if someone was making comments like that about someone's clothes or makeup or whatever, that would be considered rude, but somehow it seems to be okay to say negative things about just hair, and I'm tired of hearing about it so I hide my hair now just to stop people from commenting on it, even strangers have come up to me with their annoying comments.

For those of you who are wondering: I asked my mum (she's a hairdresser) why so many of her colleagues end up cutting more hair length than required by their customers and she told me that making a precise haircut is much easier if you cut a larger amount of hair length and they usually go for precision rather than retaining length. Hairdressers also have a very different idea about how many split ends are tolerable compared to us common people.

I don't understand that because haircuts are simply following lines. You make the first cut and then use that as a guide for the rest of the head, you just use the angles you need for the desired cut. Precision doesn't require more length off, maybe only if you had weird layers or something and had to have a drastic change. This makes no sense to me at all. Not currently a hairdresser but I have had professional training.

Thank you for sharing your process, reasons for having it long and your humor. What I enjoyed and found most helpful about it is that you are following and honoring what feels authentically joyful FOR YOU. I also was this in your other video on why you cover your hair. I used to have VERY long hair (fr 19 -26 yrs old) until around early 2000"s. I had bad memories re hair salons fr childhood bec hair cutting was the way I would be punished/disciplined growing up (instead of being grounded or losing TV watching privileges) so of course, I HAD to grow my hair. My hair grows VERY fast and is pretty thick. I used to wash it every time I showered bec it is what I knew. Fast forward in time, I lost my fear and distrust of hair salons. I began having different hair cuts, shorter and shorter, bleached, colored, highlighted, etc.....then, around 15 yrs ago, I had a VERY strong desire to shave my head. It would have me free of seeing long hair all over, less time for caring, less products, less thinking about it, etc. So, in autumn of 2017, I finally shaved my head and I LOVED, LOVED it. It felt so authentically me, exhilirating and got a ton of compliments on how it looked on me. I started growing it again around 2019 and for about a year it grew pretty fast. I thought I was going to back to having long hair BUT the more it got longer the more it felt completely OFF for me -- everytime I looked in the mirror it felt all kinds of wrong! So I shaved it and felt a TREMENDOUS sense of relief. I am grateful for you video bec I am now keeping my hair in grown out buzzed cut of 3 wks hair growth (I like it lot FOR ME) and I will keep the same kind of simple care and upkeep as you do with your long, beautiful hair. The sulphur soap is FANTASTIC news. I never heard that before. I have watched a woman who is a L'Ange hair ambassador who has hair as long as yours (she's a natural blonde) and she also only washes once a month. Her hair is phenomanally gorgeous and she has hair tutorials on how she maintains it. Of course, she uses a lot of the products fr the company bec it has and continues to work for her. Bottomline, being that hair is VERY, VERY short, if I have to go out where it might get dirty, I will begin the practice of covering it. I will wash only once a month too and will do the scalp massage and brushing. I will also begin using sulphur soap for my scalp. Again, thank you. Your channel is a beautiful expression of your authentic self and it allows the rest of us to be inspired honor that in ourselves as well.

People told me literally every single one of those "tips" at the end of your video and I thought that maybe a bob would actually be more fun to style and all. Also, people kept telling me that I'd look way more mature and beautiful if I had my hair cut. Well, that sadly wasn't true either. Speaking of the amount of time caring for long hair: I agree, it's not that bad. When I have shoulder-length hair, I spend half an hour in the shower when I wash it. When I have waist-length hair, I spend *still* half an hour in the shower. The only annoying thing is waiting for it to dry, which can take a couple hours. I don't like to use hair dryers. I finger-comb it until it's untangled and 80% dry before braiding. I don't even try to brush/comb my hair wet, because it's so fine it just snaps. My friend's mother was trying to discourage her from imitating me and my long hair, saying it would take forever to braid up. I demonstrated that it takes only 3 minutes to do a neat French braid, and I didn't even use a comb or brush.

I agree with Pretty Shepard, short hair, to me is much more work. I cut my long hair to a bob when I graduated high school and regretted it! I hated having to actually dry my hair everyday and make sure it was "styled" right. And too with my hair being a mix between curl and a wave I ALWAYS had to flat iron it if I hadn't used a hair dryer on it. Thank you for the tips!

For a longtime my hair was thin, lifeless, falling out, I'd get sores on my head. I kept it in a pixie cut, because everytime I grew it to my shoulders it would just fall out and be so thin that old scars on my head shown out like flags. One day I discovered I had a wheat sensitivity, like, eating wheat literally causes my joints to lock up like cement. So I stopped eating it. Now, two years after my last cut (with one 2inch trim to cut off nasty split ends) my hair is thick(ish, as thick as my genes will allow), slightly curly, and all the way to the bottom of my ribcage. Diet is definitely the #1 thing to consider, before other factors. If I have my food even slightly contaminated by wheat, I'll get sores and a good chunk of hair will fall out. I have so many uneven baby hairs from the fluctuation in my health. I also use a chlorine filter for my shower, which works miracles. I didn't know I had naturally curly hair, until I installed the filter. And the filter prevents buildup of chemicals and minerals in my hair. I only need to wash with shampoo if I have deadskin buildup on my scalp.

@@frmday1 wheat apparently has a naturally occurring pesticide, to deter bugs from eating it. It appears that selective breeding of it has caused it to consider some of us poor humans as pests. It's not wrong, but it sucks for us. If your husband gets flack for being gluten intolerant but tests negative to celiac, it's probably that protein, called Amylase-trypsin Inhibitors.

I don't know about if it helps growing but I have also recently started to wash my hair less and less often. I had found a video of historian of beauty explaining how for centuries, women didn't wash their hair with shampoo and all but mostly with just water, sometime one or 2 ingredients to get rid of sebum excess but that was all, and women in the past did have beautiful and looong hair even though. What they did though was spending a looot of time brushing their hair every day. That's why i thought it couldn't harm to go back to a more ancient hair care routine. I started brushing my hair a lot more, very gently to not have them fall too much. I really saw a difference : by brushing the hair between 20 min an an hour while watching a movie in the evening, the sebum and natural oils of your hair are spread on all the lenght and don't stay at the roots. This protects it and prevents greasy hair. Also, brushing it has made my roots stronger i believe, and i loose less and less hair everyday. When i feel like my hair starts to be dirty, i wash it with just water and conditioner. No shampoo. This removes excess oil without making the scalp dry like shampoo does by removing to much oil. And honestly my hair seems to have gotten used to this new rythm because it really never ever gets greasy again. I can totally stay a whole week, maybe even more, without washing and it's not getting greasy (i still have 1 shampoo per week because i'm getting an oil bath when my ends start to feel too dry, as i have curly hair). But honestly i can only recommand shampooing less girls !! Your hair will be healthier if you let it be as much as possible. Let it produce its own oils, make sure to brush to spread it down to the ends, and don't wash it because that's litterally the oil your hair produces to maintain its own health and hydratation.

I had a similar thing happen to my hair when I went for a "trim." I told them I was growing it out and wanted maybe an inch taken off. They responded, "Oh we'll just take the dead ends off." I walked in with waist-length hair. Walked out with shoulder-length hair. The last time I went to get my hair cut (it was already short that time so I wasn't too worried), the same thing happened to another girl with really long hair, and you could tell she wanted to cry when she left. After she was gone, the hairstylists were talking about how long hair was "gross" and "all I can think of is how long that hair has been on her head." Unsure why that's such an issue, but yeah, seems to be a pretty common salon thing.

I have hair down to the bottom of my butt and I mostly watched this video out of a sense of solidarity because I also wash my hair once a month, sometimes going even longer in winter,. I do a lot of the things mentioned in the video but I learned some new things to try so thanks! My hair used to be nearly knee length but I went to get a trim just before Covid was a thing and had the same experience you did of having it cut MUCH shorter than requested. Grrrrrr. When people ask me how to grow their hair long I start by telling them stop getting it trimmed the recommended every 6 - 8 weeks. Just get it trimmed to even things out as it grows when it starts to look scraggly and they nod. When I next tell them to gradually space out washing their hair until they are washing it no more than once a week and then see if they can go even longer than that they usually cringe and I can tell they are either reconsidering growing their hair out or if I'm a reliable source or not. When I get to my point 3 about nutrition they tune in again so at least they get some good out of the conversation. Next time I should point them to this video. I see in the comments people talking about being asked if they plan to donate their hair. FYI to anyone reading this, at least in the States, the most commonly known hair donation charity, Locks of Love, has been shown to be a scam. They do not make wigs, they sell the hair, and they don't give children free wigs. They will SELL them a wig at what is supposed to be a discount if the parent is willing to wade through an application process that seems to be designed to get them to give up. The best advice I've heard is to sell your hair and then donate the money to a pediatric cancer charity. Less processing costs for the charity and you will know up front if your hair is usable to make wigs with. Even Locks of Love admits that most of the submissions they get end up in the trash because the hair is not suitable for wig making for some reason even if the person who donated tried to abide by their guidelines.

That rings the bell. That reminds me of posts and videos I had bumped into previously that we should be more conscious of those so-called "charity organizations ". The more mega international the organizations, the more crap they are. They are abusing our kindness with a lot of crappy deals to make money, in short, our kindness never exactly go to the poor and needy, or the real environmental cause, or the extinct animals. The money goes into somebody pockets and worst still, some organizations are just a camouflage to hide some real criminal activities like child trafficking or child sex. If you want to help someone, do it yourself. Pass him or her your donation directly is much more direct and meaningful.

Hi! Below-butt-length hair here. Thank you for your video, I have to say I absolutely agree with and practice pretty much everything you've mentioned. I can't go more than two weeks without washing, I'd like to, but my hair starts falling out if I go too long. I disinfect my brushes with Milton tablets once a month before washing them (binky disinfectant). Anyway, I'm also big on natural oils and my powerhouse oil for haircare: rosemary EO. I put it in moderation in every hair oil that I use (mostly argan, jojoba and camellia) and mix it in the brown dropper bottles like you. Makes every oil smell amazing and it stimulates and repairs like crazy. Camellia oil is an old geisha secret. I'm a big folk remedy enthusiast and my two other secrets are - Slavic folk remedy: flax oil&sour cream (50/50) 30 min full hair mask before washing. Japanese&Chinese folk secret: fermented rice bran wash, I actually pour it in a basin, lay down with a rolled up towel and do a 20 min full hair soak and massage my scalp during it. Last but not least: boar bristle brush!
