I Tried the Woobles Beginner Crochet Kit (is it worth it?)

Honestly the brilliance of these kits isn't the instructions, it's the fact that they give you cording instead of yarn. Regular yarn can be split by the hook, pull differently, etc. Next time I'm working with a beginner I'm recommending cord like this to them because it's such a good idea.

So true! I've had a handful of friends ask me to show them how to crochet and their biggest issue is always that because they havent gotten tension down their stitches are messy and because theyre messy, my friends end up mistaking a split in the yarn as the yarn under. I always reccomend they use a chunky yarn because i find that a lot of the chunkier yarns are compact and easy to figure out, but even then when they accidentally split it, it makes a big mess. Using cording or another seamless yarn was definitely a huge step in the right direction. The basics of SCs and INCs and all that can be picked up pretty easily, but the biggest problem is figuring out if youre doing it right, and when your stitches are all over the place, its really hard to figure it out.

I completely agree. As someone who really struggled as a beginner with splitting the yarn and being able to clearly see the stitches that have already been done, this soft cording is a brilliant idea.

I learned how to crochet when I was 13 (55 years ago) from a great-aunt who taught me with a small thread and a teensy metal hook. I made pillowcase edging! Yes, back when dinosaurs roamed the earth there were such things as pillowcase edgings. Anyway, that was the beginning of a lifelong love of crochet and I'm so glad you gave it another try.

My great-aunt tried to teach me when I was a kid, however I didn’t get the hang of it back then. Looking back, I think I tried to do it left-handed since that’s what I write with and I thought I was “left-handed” despite using scissors, throwing, and some other stuff right-handed. As an adult, I’ve found I crochet right-handed (I also play instruments right-handed so yay for not having to learn backwards or need a special instrument).

I noticed you didn't mention my favourite about this kit! If you're new to crochet and have to try making a magic ring right off the bat, you're learning two things. How to single crochet and how to make a magic ring. By giving you a premade magic ring, they let you master the single crochet and THEN you can learn the magic ring when you make another piece. I feel like the makers of this kit really remembered what it's like to be a beginner crocheter. I know I struggled with that ring for months hahaha.

I just learned how to crochet with Woobles about 3 months ago. I think it was a great start that allowed me to learn various techniques with easy to follows videos and spaced out through different kits. I was lucky that I bought a 4-pack of cuties for a discounted price, and then I realized each kit adds a skill to the basics. After completing the 4 kits, I was able to buy my own yarn and look up patterns online, and recognize if they were easy enough for my skill level or not. I think these Woobles kits are brilliant, albeit pricey, but starting a hobby the right way is rarely cheap! I also saved the PDFs of the Woobles and am able to turn them into other animals - penguin became a parrot when made with colorful yarn and adding a tail, for example.

Crocheting is extremely therapeutic and calming once you have it down. I hope you'll continue. Borrow a beginners crochet stitches book from your library and start off doing little square samplers of stitches, when all squares completed you can join them together, making a rug or blanket. This can be a lot of fun.

As a crocheter, I think Pierre turned out great. I think those woobles kits are definitely worth it for a beginner. I taught myself to crochet like 17 years ago. KZbin wasn’t really a thing back then. I recommended these woobles kits to a friend of mine that struggles with crochet because I think she’s really going to learn a lot.

I watched lots of KZbin videos to help me buy the right yarn and choose appropriate patterns. Now I’ve made over a dozen amigurumi and there’s no end in sight! It was the one that made it FINALLY click for me. I was seriously ready to give up before this vid finally got me through the beginner learner hump. Now I've made two headbands and I've almost finished a set of fingerless gloves for my sister's birthday!

It was so endearing watching your progress as a beginner. $35 sounds expensive however as a crocheter myself I can totally see the value with having all the tools and materials needed as well as the videos. My very first crochet piece was granny squares so for you to do something three dimensional with the bowl and now Pierre is very impressive😊

a little late but i don't think it's that expensive. We forget that people starting out don't have anything. The hook is a good ergonomic hook so that's (canadian dollars) about 5. the stitch markers, another few dollars. safety eyes, good luck finding those without having to buy bulk (michaels in canada doesn't sell them) so you have to find those at the local yarn store if you're lucky and that's at least 5 bucks for a couple. Yarn for the body, different colours for the eyes and the beak, in the store you'd have to buy a full skein so that's 15 dollars. 3 to5 for the pattern. i think it's a great price for people to start and see if they like it.

I think starting with an amigurumi project was like throwing yourself into the deep end. 😂 It turned out great though! I personally find things like blankets and granny squares easier. Primarily because magic circles are annoying to learn. There are bunch of alternative ways of doing them out there that you might find easier to use.

Actually I found granny squares to be way harder for me and amigurumi way easier. Apparently if you have ADHD, granny squares are impossible for you. While amigurmi are easier because it’s nothing but single crochets most of the time. I still can’t do a granny square to this day. Even though several people have tried to teach me, I just can’t do it.

I found amigurumi much easier, because in case of granny square you get just that: square. And to turn it into something usable you have to make a bunch of them. But with amigurumi you have a cute toy that is just a toy, thing without any use other then being loved. Although I would recommend searching for comprehensive magic ring or alternative tutorial. I found one that actually clicked only in other language, so unfortunately I can't even recommend a good one.

Hello! This is exactly what I’m doing I could not get a misgivings circle right so I’ve started flat projects. Though I turned what was going to be a scarf into a pillow that I like. Can you recommend any good granny square tutorials? I want to try one but they look intimidating. So far I am just learning stitches. Though about trying a spiral?

I had the same experience. Back in March, I saw an ad on Insta for the Woobles but I found it to be a little pricey. So I found a kit on Amazon for around the same price but for 4 different amigurumi. Boy, was I lost! This other kit had tutorials on KZbin but they were just of someone’s hands crocheting and some quick text. I had no idea what I was doing!!! So I ended up getting the Woobles dinosaur kit. WOW, what a difference. The very detailed explanations and also the type of yarn used made it so much easier to learn. I can even watch other KZbin tutorials now and understand quickly what to do. 4 months later, I’ve made more than 10 different amigurumis and I have a huge bin full of yarn and a bunch of projects lined up. The Woobles kit is def worth it IMO!!!

Videos are amazing when it comes to crochet. I can’t read a pattern to save my life, but video is so nice because you can pause it and play something back. There is a video for everything now, and if you don’t like the way one person is showing you there is always another video to try.

2:44 I have around 25 years of experience with crochet and Tunisian crochet, my first project was a baby blanket. My younger sister learned how to crochet just so when I moved in, we would have some thing in common. Besides kayaking. Hers was a “hat” but it looked more like a bowl, LOL! She never gave up. It's definitely a cute idea, but for anyone trying to save money and still enjoy a new hobby, I learned to crochet 5 years ago with a single hook, a few balls of yarn, and free youtube tutorials, which there's THOUSANDS out there for learning crochet. Also dollar tree sells crochet hooks and yarn, and things like stitch markers are dirt cheap or you can just use a bobby pin or yarn scraps if you don't have actual stitch markers on hand. Not everyone can afford a $35 crochet kit, but everyone should be able to crochet if they want to :)

The price is definitely quite steep, but honestly The Woobles took down a lot of barriers of entry for me! Sometimes, it’s just easier mentally having everything come prepackaged with a set goal and tutorials to go with it. Crocheting honestly look really intimidating to me prior, but for me, The Woobles tutorial + package laid everything out and made it feel less overwhelming. Now that I’ve been crocheting for a while I wouldn’t buy another kit, but it definitely made this hobby more accessible to me 🫶 I think if anyone doesn’t know where to start/what to make for their first project/feel lazy about gathering all the materials, the kit is honestly such a convenient way to begin

I can say that for some folks yes crochet is kind of a "mindless" or auto pilot thing. My mom is currently crocheting a blanket and she can do that while listening to other things and not miss a stitch (most of the time). I myself have not really been able to pick crochet up, tried to learn it as a kid and tried it again one more time in my 20s. Currently trying punch needle now that I've got a general idea of "why my loops are not staying" lol. Maybe one day I'll try crochet again

I think these sets are so much better than the sets you see at barnes and noble. I’ve had so many friends tell me they got one to learn crochet and got discouraged - understandable since they’re really for upper level beginners/intermediate crocheters! I like that this is marketed to beginners and actually set up to teach beginners.

My grandmother and mom taught me to crochet when I was a little girl. My grandmother made me make chai a only for weeks and weeks before she would let me move on to actual stitches. The reason was to help me get use to the feel of the yarn and my tension. Once that is accomplished, it’s easier to actually start making something.

Stitch markers are useful to anyone doing crochet. I've used them to mark the first stitch in a round like that kit did. I've also used them to mark the beginning of a repeat on a round/row (subdividing a row helps me keep track of counts easier and have to frog less), and used them to help count rows on a big blanket, and most frequently use them to hold my last stitch in place in an active project when I have to put it down. I managed to find set of KZbin videos that went super slow to teach me, and just made swatches so I could practice the basic stitches (chains, single/double/triple crochet, and half-double crochet). Made a couple blankets, then did my first amigurumi to learn how to crochet in the round. I would have loved a kit like this, but there were none when I was learning.

As a little girl i spent lots of time with my grandmother. On saturdays I would accompany her to the beauty shop and sit in a chair with a ball of yarn and a crochet hook and just make chains. They would curl around at my feet. Its the best way to learn tension.

I learnt how to crochet/knit almost 10 years ago. Wow it sounds crazy to say almost ten years passed already since I was 13. Having a bit of experice I can say that if you bought all of the stuff yourself it would've been cheaper. But you have to applaud them for the work behind it all. They provide clear visual instructions I think anyone would be able to follow easily. And that's honestly priceless. The yarn is called t-shirt yarn. You have to be careful though because some of them are stretchy some are more like a fabric cord. I've worked with both kinds. And it's great for beginners as someone said already because you can't poke through it with the hook so it's easier to handle. And looks really clean and not messy. I think the attention to details in everything including the eyes is awesome.

I personally started crochet by looking up videos online. I watched the MaryJay's videos and they were super helpful. It was a little confusing at first, but I got the hang of it pretty quick. However, I tried to teach my friend how to crochet (with the videos) and she struggled a lot more than I did. Maybe I'm just weird, but I recommend that if you can't afford a woobles but still want to get into crochet, try watching come beginner friendly videos like that :)

My fiancé got me one for Christmas and it was a fantastic gift! When I was little, my older sisters crocheted, and they taught me how to finger crochet which I loved to do. I've been wondering about these kits for a minute now. They all look SO cute & I'm not a complete beginner when it comes to crochet, so I thought they'd be an awesome Lil project for me. I get such anxiety when it comes to crocheting in the round & the magic circle. I've never been able to get it right & my hands have pretty bad arthritis, so I don't crochet regularly bcuz I hurt so badly. I've been crocheting for a few years now, and for what it's worth, there are _some_ stitches/patterns I can do mindlessly, like a classic Granny Square (I can almost make those without even looking at my hands these days!) , but there are plenty of times where I'm trying to follow a new pattern or a specific stitch where I have to constantly check what I'm doing and count, and re-count stitches. Time and practice are your friend, but even at the very best there will still be times where math and counting are involved. I will also say, when I was first learning I found it _way_ easier to learn from just about _any_ video rather than written text, so it's not surprising to me you had such a rough go last time vs. this time. Text-only and limited-photo patterns and stitches, in my opinion, are definitely best saved for _after_ you get most of the basics down. I do agree with other comments saying the kit is kind of expensive for what it is (considering the vast array of free tutorials on KZbin and how much more yarn you could get purchasing it directly from a store) , but I also acknowledge that kits like this are often more about the convenience of having all your supplies in one place, guaranteed to work together, which can be a tricky thing by itself when you're just starting out. My only real _problem_ with these kits is that while it is _nice_ they come pre-started, I _hope_ the video tutorials still include instructions for how to _get_ to the pre-started point; Little figures like this often start with a "magic ring," and I found learning how to make one of those _super_ confusing in the beginning, especially compared to other patterns that use Chains to begin instead.

I have ZERO TIME to add anything else to my creative to-do list. I’m a fine artist, paper crafter, and vintage reseller…oh and I’m determined to get back into sewing myself some basic and easy clothes (got lots of fabric waiting for me,) and I love to garden,and whatever else captures my attention. I pretty much gave up knitting and quilting. But my mom (RIP ❤) crocheted and her mom, whom I never knew, did that very intricate type of crocheting called “tatting.” But there’s something about crocheting that pushes me to at want to give it a try. I could at least learn the basic stitches. And I do have a few sizes of crochet needles and hung on to a good bit of yarn (sold a bunch more too.) So if I feel confident with doing some trial crocheting, I may order one of these kits. They are so very cute! Thanks!

As a knitter, I've always wanted to try to learn how to crochet, but would get intimidated as soon as I start. My mom would try to teach me, but as someone who has been crocheting since she could pick up a crochet hook, I guess it was hard for her to crochet slowly and would end up defaulting to her usual super fast speed everytime. Admittedly, $35 is a bit on the pricey side, but I do like being able to go back to the videos that are more slower paced for beginners and the penguin looks super cute! Well thats the thing with knitting and crochet, i could buy a sweater for chraper than i make one with the cost of the yarn and needles etc but it is the time and experience and group i meet with and stress relief and the color changes and the accomplishment that is worth the money imo. Great job!

I highly recommend TL Yarn Crafts here on KZbin - she makes fantastic informational videos as well as talking about yarn and her experience with the craft. I love crochet - and knitting - once you get past the learning curve, it's all fantastic. Learning about new ways to do things is so much fun.

I learned how to crochet by reading the crochet patterns. My mom would ask me to translate patterns for her. She tried teaching me but it wasnt until my dad finished a Tunisian crochet blanket that I wanted to make one for my son. I was 19. I love it. And the wobbles kits look fun.

Learning the magic loop start is well worth it because it makes such a tight closure. You know that the stuffing will not come out easily. Also using safety eyes is important is toy is for a child or pet. Enjoy your journey because you will only get better.

The issue im having right now is learning how tight to go. I'm either going too tight or not tight enough and it's very frustrating. The yarn with those project looks really easy to work with. The yarn I'm currently working with now is challenging as it goes flat and freys real easy.

When first starting out everything looked foreign but once I understood what each stitch was my projects looked way better. I wished when I started 15 years ago that there was a wooble for me to have learn from. It sounds like it was definitely worth the $35.

I crochet. Making plushies is a lot harder than other projects. If you want a more mindless project you can make a blanket with a simple stitch. It will take longer but it is more mindless. Also granny squares can be like that and pretty easy once you learn and get going. Your little guy turned out very cute! What did you name him/her? Great video and I really like your artwork 👍

I learned it all on youtube....for FREE! I found vids that fit me. I've always been a slow learner and I there are many excellent teachers on youtube. I don't mind the search as I learn a lot of bits and pieces and hacks from other channels along the way. Comments answer my questions. In my case I need that $35 for my yarn. Just my take. For granny squares, I would recommend the tutorial made by "hooked by robin" here in yt. Her join as you go method was also helpful for creating a blanket using the squares. I finished my first granny square project using her tutorial and I never crocheted before.

I bought the same kit as you. I’ve been an avid crocheter for 20+ years. I bought the kit because I haven’t tried Amigurumi. The yarn hurt my hands. The hook isn’t as good as my favorite Clover Amour hooks. I won’t spend my money on these kits again. I did purchase the book by the company, but I have learned more on KZbin.

In Brazil, there is some kind of this kits, they come with material (hook, row marker, needle to sew, safety eyes, thing that you can stuff your amigurumi - I don't know the name in english 😅 - and cotton yarn) and pattern. They are very cute and easy to make if you know the basic of crochet.

When I watched another review on youtube of the Woobles kits the creater made a really good point of thinking of buying a woobles kit as not just buying a kit but buying a class to create that amigurumi which makes the price make more sense to me.

Thank you seen a few videos on it but ur one made more sense to me and as a beginner its looks like a lot of fun I have just gotten some wool and a full pack of different sizes crochet hooks cos I’ve been wanting to make something for my daughter and didn’t know where to even start cos I’ve never done it before so u don’t know where to find someone with really basic step well not that I have ur video gives me hope. Have got to get me some of these. I’ve only knitted a big blanket before but never learnt the skill of how to properly add other wool just tie a knot I’m keen to try

You did great! The more you practice the better you get. I've been crocheting since I was 12 years old. I still have some of my very first crochet projects and they sure look wonky! Those kits are cute, but to me the price is a bit much.

That's a really good point. Yes, this kit seems like a lot for a project. But with everything laid out nicely, and giving people a chance to enjoy this type of project and to want to look for something similar, I think it is well worth it. Thank you for making this video on them. I will admit that I saw them a few times on Instagram, and thought about getting a kit. But it really seemed like a lot. But then again, I'm not the biggest fan for projects that need to keep constant tension... But it is quite fun to just crochet and take things apart. :P

I learned how to crochet at 6 I mostly did small bracelets and I am now 12 so I think that this is a good idea if you do not have an instructor, my grandma taught me, but if you do not have an instructor I think this is a wonderful idea I mean yarn is expensive so I under stand the price.

idk if you’re sticking with crochet but there’s a more beginner method instead of the magic circle where you chain 2 and work all your stitches in the first chain. also a row counter will help you keep track of where you are in a pattern. you can buy them or there’s a few free apps you could download
