Have you been wondering if the Woobles kits are good for crochet beginners to learn how to make amigurumi toys? ME TOO!!
Well today I’m not just giving you my opinion, but I’m using my very own husband as a guinea pig to test out the Woobles. He’s a total newbie, he’s never picked up a crochet hook in his life and we are going to see if he can learn how to crochet with this kit.

I know, but I understand! In truth, I don't think it is possible for me to speak without using my hands! The one time I had laryngitis, my husband was concerned, but after I went to the doctor, and he said I needed to rest my voice, my husband said, "Thank goodness," implying he thought he would get some peace and quiet. He forgot I have another way of "speaking" with my hands, but soon remembered, as he had page after page of aggravation, written with a red felt tip pen, shoved in front of his eyes on an extremely regular basis.

The hook is so important. When I first started I had a hook from Amazon. I thought I was having difficulty crocheting, as I just couldn’t get the slip stitch to work. Once I purchased a smooth hook, I quickly discovered it wasn’t that I couldn’t do it, it wasn’t bad technique on my part, or anything else I was doing incorrectly. It was poor tools. The Woobles kit has an option to purchase the kit without the hook. On the Woobles website, it is $5 cheaper to choose the kit without the hook. You could purchase a better hook with the savings. First time I heard someone explain the cost factor as a course instead of just a kit. Brilliantly done.

@@EliseRoseCrochet the hook is an option on their regular kits. Part of the "appeal" of these collab kits (Harry Potter, Snoopy, BT21) is their specially designed hooks. @@vickijackson5547yeah I looked at a couple of my hooks both from woobles kits and one I got from a set for Christmas and there are definitely visible differences. The generic woobles kit hooks are not as bad as the specially designed ones but I never noticed because I kept using my generic hook and put the others in a bag together.

I admire the HELL out of your self-restraint. I'm about two and a half minutes into him starting this, and I want to reach through the screen and do it for him! Literally, I would have had to set up the cameras in their different spots, and then leave the room. That surface roughness machine is fascinating! That also explains why, when I'm using a hook that doesn't see a lot of use, or one that's new, why I'll feel so weird to crochet. Because the hook hasn't been "broken in" yet, and gotten smoother thanks to wear.

I started crochet with the Woobles kit (Penguin) and I had a similar experience. The videos were slow and clear, I liked the yarn that wouldn’t split, and I still use the markers and needle for my own projects now that came in the kit. It took me 3 days to finish the penguin (which includes having to make your own magic ring later. I still use the method taught in the woobles to make mine). I knew I’d want to continue so I ordered a second kit from their site (turtle) for a reduced price without the hook. I finished that one in a day. By the second kit I could tell the hook had a bit of drag so I ordered a set of Clover Armour hooks based on your hook reviews. I could immediately tell the difference. I still think the Woobles kit is great and I still recommend it to new people starting out. Also, I LOVED the joining of craft and science! Please do more if you can!!

I have done several Woobles kits, and I recently started a Harry Potter kit. I crocheted about 2.5 rounds with that hook before I just couldn’t anymore. My hook hand felt fatigued so quickly. I went and switched the hook out for an earlier Woobles hook (blue, and I would say probably very much like your Hobby Lobby hook), and my hook hand instantly felt better. My theory is that the Woobles themed hooks have become such a collector’s item, and the Woobles have grown so much in popularity that they found a company that can make them themed hooks in bulk, and they are much cheaper (lower quality) than their earlier generic blue hooks. Just my 2 cents. I will say that the Woobles got me so hooked on crochet that I came to KZbin to find crochet channels to watch, and I found you! 😊 So they are certainly doing something right if I want to step up my crochet game after less than a year.

This has been very informative! I learned to crochet with The Woobles in Feb 2023, and I still buy the kits for their cuteness factor. Last year when I first branched out to other yarns, I bought Clover Amour hooks. After that, I found the Woobles hooks unusable. I thought it was because of some residual adhesive from the handle making the shaft sticky. A few of the special hooks still had a layer of thin plastic on the shaft that manufacturing didn't remove. But thanks to your hubby's tests, I know it's not something that can be scraped or buffed off, because the metal itself is rough. It's fun to see the science of it. Fun fact for you: Even though the Sharks fought over them, Justine and Adrian ultimately did not partner with any sharks. You can search for a quote from Mark Cuban where he said they outsharked the sharks. They seem to be doing really well on their own.

You can pay $5 less on any kit to skip the crochet hook. I bought my first Woobles kit with one, and for subsequent ones clicked “no hook” (which brought the price down by $5 each). I completely agree with you on the crochet hooks. I've never gotten a Wooble kit but did purchase a knockoff kit when I first started, and it took me months, an injury, hours of KZbin watching on product reviews, and a $90 purchase (tulip set) to realize how much difference good crochet hooks can make. When I saw the Harry Potter kits I was tempted because of how pretty the hook handles look, but even by looking at the picture of the hooks I could tell that the shaft is going to be rough and it's not going to be a good purchase. It's cool to get my observation validated here though. SCIENCE!

They are selling crochet courses , with everything included and in some cases licensed characters, including manual labor to start every single piece in every single kit! I feel that the price of the kits is high, too, but a LOT goes into running an operation like that, providing what they do. I can imagine that their expenses are really significant. I would love to know how they're responding to this!

This hits home for be because I learned crochet with Woobles 8 months ago. Your findings are mostly on the money. When the kits are non-branded, they include a generic ergonomic 4mm hook. I didn't have the problem your husband had with the branded hooks because by that time I had already completed a couple of kits so it was easy to notice something was off. With the branded kits, I've bought two and both hooks had problems of being rougher or just not being sanded down. Another common thing is for folks to not read that some kits are intermediate kits which will not start the magic ring for you. My team at work picked on cuteness so they were doing double crochet clusters as beginners that just picked up a hook. My practice has been to print off the pattern they give you and only to refer to the videos as needed.

😂 I happened grab my first Woobles ball of yarn the wrong way and figured oh, I just got one (narwhal) that they forgot to start a magic ring on. Found their tutorial, figured it out, and went on with everything. I already had counters, so it didn’t phase me much… finished the damned project and then saw the other side of the yarn, where the magic ring and start was tucked in. 😂😂😂🤦🏼‍♀️

I wanted to mention something VERY important after seeing the hook info near the end. These collabs are usually $40 per kit but all include their hook. The beginner kits that are NOT collabs usually have a "no crochet hook" option for as low as $25. Then you can take the extra $5 you save by not including a hook and get a decent hook at Hobby Lobby!

For people who wants to know from more people who has tried it: Woobles was my first introduction to ANY kind of knitting. I have ADHD, so concentrating in one hobbies is impossible for me lol (disclaimer as with any other MH disorders my experience will probably be 70% different from others w/the same disorder). I’ve made all the first Harry Potter collection(including the pet accessories); some accessories of another summer like collection and a shark, here are my thoughts: 1. As a beginner, it’s amazing. The videos are slow, have subtitles (English) if needed, and explain everything. They are easy to follow and is awesome that you can see how it should look like. They name each video with the skill you are going to learn for that particular row. The old videos are harder to follow and confusing, and too long for my brain to pay attention to them. However the old videos comes with a pdf with only the pattern instructions which is awesome. 2. If you are not a beginner or maybe you are but you know the basics, the videos are too slow and frustrating. But easy to jump ahead and just look for the pattern instructions and how it should look like. If you get one of the wooble that has the older videos, when you know the basic is so much better because you get the pdf and can use the videos just for reference. 3. The yarn. OMG the yarn. Know that I moved to more challenging projects, how I miss this yarn. You can see each stitch, it does not breaks or separates into little strings of yarn, and is so much easier to count it. This yarn helps you a lot, so I do recommend to even buy it if you want to continue practicing before moving to “real” yarn. This yarn is like training wheels. And once you feel comfortable with your skills, changing to normal yarn will add a new challenge because it’s not as manageable (I really don’t know how else to describe it). 4. For my ADHD peeps. Doing amigurumi (what woobles basically are) is a good place to start when you want to learn crochet. Each row is a new mission. You rarely are repeating, which helps with the “new” feeling that we need. 5. Easy does not always means “most practical” mean in they teach you the easy way, this doesn’t mean is the only way or that there’s a faster way, it just means it’s the most easy way to learn it. Once you move onto sth else, you will be able to see more ways of doing the same stitch and choosing which works best for you is your choice! Some skills I’ve learned through woobles I changed it for other ways that were more practical or functional. Some other skills I kept as I learned them because it was the easiest even if not the most functional. 6. The hooks are not the best, ngl. They hurt and made my hands cramp or sore. However, they are okay, I would recommend getting other kind, if you are able to go and buy them in person so you can see how much your hand adjust to them. 7. You won’t leave everything that it is to be learnt. However, you do learn the basic. If you want to learn more advance stitches or learning how to read visual(international) patterns you will need to find another option. I’ll add more in the comments if with the video I get more ideas

Also velocity will come with practice. It took me a week and a half to finish my first Wooble (Voldemort). 3 days to finish the second (Dobby), and 3 to 5 hours to finish the rest of woobles(Dombuldore, Harry & Shark). My first accessory (Nagini) took me 2 days, the second (sock) 1 and a half hour and the rest between 30 min (sun hat, baseball hat, beach ball) to 2 hours (fawk & hedwig) depending on the amount of stitching I needed to do.

I showed my husband your video, he knew exactly what your husband was doing. .. (he knew about your husband's company)... that's all he said about that.
