I found yoga about nine years ago, when I was 62. Started out slowly, shorter classes and trying to do better at the basic poses. Now, I go for two hours a day, five days a week. I definitely noticed as a man doing yoga that we're taught the pinnacle of masculinity is strength above all else. Yoga for me is a good reminder that there are many aspects of a healthy body and mind, and everything is about balance.

Yoga is made up of nine different branches including things like prānāyāma (breathwork) as well as yamas and niyamas (“behavioral guidelines” that will lead to a better quality of life. They say simple things like don’t murder. 😂) Yoga is a really well-thought-out and beautiful lifestyle practice made for all shapes, sizes, gender identities, races, ect. so I’m happy to see you enjoyed it!! 🥰🥰🥰 - Shanell

Thank you! This needs to be higher up. The word yoga means "union" - yoga is not about becoming flexible or an exercise as it seems to have become unfortunately. Yoga is about breaking down all the boundaries you currently have in order to create union with everything. The postures are just one small aspect and that too each has a purpose. Highly reccomend checking out someone like Sadhguru, ramakrishna parmahasa, swami vivekananda to learn more about the essence of this ancient vedic knowledge.

I never liked yoga in the past - now I love it. Yes, it is challenging, but I took it slowly. I started at 59 with Adriene (and dog Benji), who is very warm and accepting of falling over. Just 20 - 30 mins per day (sometimes I miss a day or two), and at 65 I feel so good, more flexibility, strength, mindfulness and better breathing. As we get older, we need to look after our backs. Glad you found it like I did.

I had a car accident in my early 20's and broke 4 spinal cords. Even when the bones were healed I still had back pain for years to come, needed to rest every 20 minutes somewhere. I tried many things to overcome the chronic pain, going to the gym 3-4x a week, physiotherapy, accupuncture, swimming, tai-chi, qi-gong etc. When I started meditating however everything changed which was counterintuitive to me in the beginning(doing nothing to overcome pain?). After some time meditation brought me to realize with clarity what yoga really was - not just a different style of pilates for women in skinny leggings (as I ignorantly perceived it back then), but a method to realize the mechanics of being human and exploring the life that I am from within, not intellectually but by experience. Yoga made me realize that the basis of all human experience comes from within. Of course, it has its physical benefits but it is not a physical practice. It is a method to live in experience with what is beyond our physical 5-sense-perception. It is a method to obliterate the boundaries of your individuality because right now we got the wrong idea of being separate from life. When we speak of ourselves we speak in terms of 'me' AND the 'universe' out there. This is a false belief we carry - there is no separation. There is no - you AND life - but just life. You are life. Yoga means to unite, to yoke - what? To yoke your individual experience with the cosmic, realizing by experience, not by thinking that there is no separation. This is not a philosophy or belief system, you can experience it the same way you experience your breath. Now life can happen in limitless ways within you, beyond thought, beyond imagination, beyond memory, beyond survival and biology. It is only when we resist life, we suffer. Yoga is a method to end suffering because having realized that the basis of suffering is coming from within. I may not have 100% control over my circumstances, but at least what happens within me should happen the way I want to, isn't it? When one transcends yoga as a practice, experientially, yoga becomes a state of consciousness - a state of union with the rest of existence - simply being life and life.

Please try yoga 30 days and don’t treat it like a fitness workout. Tune in to your body, drop your expectations, and the practice will work it’s magic. I highly recommend Yoga with Adriene and Sarabeth Yoga. Don’t worry if you are doing it right, just keep at it. You will be astonished at how you feel after 30 days. Good luck!❤

Being an Indian I sometimes feel ashamed that I have to remind myself the benifits of Yoga from people outside India. We truly have taken this gem for granted. I will definitely try to start from tomorrow. Thanks Matt! Also, these exercises are actually Asana, which are one of the 8 steps to achieve Yoga.

Can I ask you something is yoga originally was ment to worship something, or it's sorely revolves around steadiness, mindfulness, strength just spiritual and physical healing, some just focus on the moves some say we need to face the sun and throw some salt around!!
@vijay928922 жыл бұрын
@@selbill3644 Actually yoga means to get connected (with conciuness or whatever you want to name it) or to get in union Health and mental benifits or Mystical powers are considered as a distraction (BUT IF YOU WANT HEALTH BENIFITS YOU CAN DO YOGA THERE'S NO PROBLEM Everything I wrote is according to how much knowledge I have on this topics)

@@selbill3644 uhm as much as i have learnt, yoga is kinda like the language of spirituality, the more you speak it the more you get to understand your consciousness, as in early indian ideology, hinduism has been primarily concerned about reaching one-ness (basically being present consciously and spiritually), so practitioners found out yoga - it does the job when done patiently and peacefully. The salt stuff and all that are bs, no need to listen to that... the sun thing, probably uhm philosophically sun has been of great importance across many civilisations, idk maybe facing sun reduces the distractions because of more light from a specific source.. the philospohical value also adds to it ig

Hey Matt! Bhagya from India here. Just came across this video. Loved it that yoga helped you so much though some stuff you said about your earlier beliefs about yoga or the way it is observed by people there pained me. But happy that it helped you since my family, all of my mom's side and I have grown up practising the traditional authentic yoga and continue doing so. It is always intriguing and astonishing to see a non-native of India perform yoga. All poses were beautiful. The headstand got the background music it deserved👏👏👏..this is one heart touching vid for me..🙏🙏🙏

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, Indians love when white people validate Indian things and will always be suckers for it. And white KZbinrs have figured this out. They know they can get a massive surge in Indian viewers by doing something Indian, and like clockwork, Indians are in the comments section going “so glad you started doing Indian things!Proud to be Indian 🇮🇳! Jai Hind!!!”

@@snoopbob9702 it's a science in its own....the holistic approach of body and mind. Yoga means union. There are definite hindu practices there. But the mental wellness comes with it is great. I have been doing yoga almost daily for going on two years now, and it has absolutely changed my life. I randomly decided to try a 10 Minute video for neck stretches because I had a lot of neck and shoulder tension at the time. Stumbled upon Yoga with Kassandra’s KZbin channel, meaning I stumbled into the best possible habit I could introduce into my routine. Did her 30 day, 10 minute morning challenge, each day focusing on a different area of the body. It was the first thing I did every morning, and I noticed the benefits right away. This challenge was the first that I ever felt truly motivated to complete! From then to now, yoga has become such an integral part of my life. I’ve lost over 100 pounds and feel such a difference in my joints. I have toned muscles I haven’t seen since high school. 😂 I feel so much more positive when I use yoga to start my day. To anyone thinking about it, give it a shot 😄. Even just 10 minutes a day can be enough to change how you feel physically/emotionally/spiritually/positively 😊.

I'm kind of new to your channel. Loved this video. I've been practicing yoga for...8-ish years now after leaving the military with PTSD. Like yourself, I kind of talked a lot of crap about it until I started practicing on a regular basis. It's funny that people think yoga is "just stretching" and they don't realize how physically challenging it is until they're on their hands and unable to hold a pose, so they start squirming. lol. I'm also 34, and as a licensed physical therapist assistant, I learned that what I love about the physical practice of yoga is that it's a balance between flexibility and strength. If you had just flexibility, you wouldn't have the muscular strength to provide stability; if you had just strength, you would be in such a contracted state that would limit mobility--both of which are injuries waiting to happen if it hadn't already.
