@@kelliyarbrough1333 Me too. I use it just for normal writing (notes, protocols, etc.). The writing is smooth, you can write much faster than with any other pen and a bottle of ink lasts you ages, so no waste. I do not like it for drawing though

Fun stuff! You can also draw with dip pens, which is what I prefer to do. So people know; The rough feathered edges on the ink will vary based on the paper. I advise doing various ‘paper tests’ to see how each type of paper works with supplies. Some papers make far smoother edges of lines with dip pens than others. I’ve been doing paper tests a lot for a few years now (and keeping them labeled for reference) and it really helps when deciding what to use for various projects.

When you think about it, when kids learn to do cursive in pencil at school it can take half of the school year to get through the alphabet. Not only is calligraphy harder, it requires you to learn ink control and how to properly use either a dip pen or fountain pen. As someone who writes almost exclusively with a fountain pen everyday, it's not something you can pick up immediately. I cant tell you how many notes I wrote for class that were illegible for my final.

It seems to be different in other countries but in Germany we only wrote with pencil in first (and maybe second) grade. After that everyone learned to use a fountain pen.

@@shadow_phoenix_alex That honestly sounds amazing. In the US we almost always use rollerball pens. I didn't even know fountain pens existed until three years ago when I found them by accident. It seems like the only people who use them are collectors but they're honestly so much better.

Man, I finished making a leatherbound “bestiary” inspired book of Irish mythology a month or two ago. I feel your pain on the “my handwriting isn’t good enough for this”, as I spent generally anywhere from a few hours to 4 days on a single page, writing in cursive (something I’ve not done since I was in primary school), and putting anywhere from 6 to 14 hours a day into the damned thing. It doesn’t help that I got to the end, showed it to people, and had one of the major comments I got be “why didn’t you have the writing printed, just do the artwork, and I can’t read it”. Doesn’t help that it was ink, I made mistakes on the final, and that I’m not very good at sticking to a straight line whilst writing. Your work looks fantastic though! I bought the collection, and have been waiting with great anticipation for it, ever since I first saw it on Jazza’s vlog channel.

my teacher one's asked me about that how can I read my handwriting cuz' he didn't see any letters in it 🤣 And he was right - I don't wrote any letters, only some...thing that imitates a shape of a word. In Germany we learned how to write with feathered ink pens like brands called "Lami" or "pelican" have. So for me it was pretty obvious which was the better side to use. Aren't those ink pens popular in the us/Canada too?

Yeah, that was suprising for me too, especially because we learn how to write using mainly fountain pens in primary school in Poland. Dip-pens are a bit more difficult because you have to learn how to control the ink flow but using nibs is prety much the same.

I remember dabbling in calligraphy in grade 8 art class. We were studying Van Gogh at the time, and we had to replicate his style with calligraphy pens and ink. The really cool part was making the pens ourselves out of bamboo sticks. I'm pretty sure I still have mine in a drawer somewhere.

When she died I grabbed whatever handwritten pieces I could find. 26 yeas later I can show my daughter & prove that hope is not all lost, we can achieve beautiful writing with some effort.

Fellow lefty here!! I’ve been doing calligraphy for about 1 year now and I’m here to tell you that IT IS POSSIBLE!! It takes a lot of time, and practice, and some creative work around, but it IS possible!!

@@lailanityler2380 oooh! that's good! i'm guessing there are certain tricks to it, so if you have any that would be nice to know :) and the person above asked a very good question: how do you stop smudging? this is coming from someone who always gets ink on their hand whever they write with pen so lol

@@thesassyunixorn4390 That’s the extra tricky part. Ensuring that you take your time between each stroke helps (it gives the previous some time to dry), some other tips I can give you are: 1 - Use quick dry inks when possible (alcohol inks are fantastic for that sorta thing) 2 - Adjust the angle of your paper (this will change depending on the position of your hand. Try and get it to the point where you can write comfortably without touching your previous letters) 3 - Put a slip of paper under your hand (it helps to avoid activating the ink as you move your hand across the page) 4 - Fiddle with it (there are some people who trained themselves to write back to front, even some who write with the paper completely horizontal to them.) It’s some funky stuff. And us lefties gotta put in a lotta extra work to avoid smudging (which even happens to me still, sometimes. No one’s perfect). But it CAN be done. There are a couple different resources from left-handed calligraphers here on KZbin if y’all are curious ^^

Great job Jackie! I loved both styles!! I got into calligraphy back when I was in junior high. I'm not a professional, but I do use it for greeting cards I send out. In regards to that metal piece that came with the set, the tall cone is to hold the pen, the small circle is to hold an ink bottle (I guess smaller than the one you have) If you really get into calligraphy, to make cards extra special, you should get two envelopes for mailing... The outside envelope is normal with addresses and stamps (written in calligraphy, of course) and the inner envelope sealed with wax. You could even get a wax seal made with a salt shaker design.
