I see him a lot more at the low end of elite smash than at the super high GSP. He's been my main since the game came out and I've always thought he was underrated, but was weirdly inconsistent. That up smash is still heinous tho. D throw skewer is also really goofy when u land it on someone not expecting it. He's got some really creative setups with his sour spots so it's not the end of the world if you don't play him like Marth.

To me, the 3 things that are the biggest barrier to entry for ridley are: 1. The combo thing you mentioned where he's only really hitting you for 2-3 hit combos and then otherwise reading movement and hitting back 2. The recovery, non-ridley players don't know how to snap to ledge with his up special forward, and then there's also the recovery mixups which you also have to know 3. The edgeguards, it's super important to be comfortable off-stage to utilize his aerial tools + fireballs I think it's interesting that you were able to notice the sourspot overlap problem when it comes his F-Tilt and U-Tilt. For F-Tilt at least, you have to imagine that the sweetspot is just the second half of ridley's tail tip even if it's a bit bigger. Skewer is the opposite in that it's better to imagine the sweetspot being the base half of the tail tip. Once you know the details of other hitboxes as well, Ridley becomes a lot more intuitive.

I was happy he mentioned the combo limits, took me a while to figure out that some strings that almost work just won't. I think riddly is a high risk high reward character. He relies on reads more than combos but he can cover more options, all if they are on platform 😂.

@@matthewmazzatto8003 I like his F-Air. I use it as a spacing tool, can do drag-down into F-Tilt or Down-Tilt, good at edge-guarding, etc. But his Dair definitely sucks.

@@MerryBlind I wish his Fair was a Double Claw Slash like Wolf’s FTilt. Ridley’s current Tail flail Fair makes his spacing really awkward, so giving him a tool that’d outreach the majority of characters (including a few swords) would go a long way.

@@matthewmazzatto8003 Fair is better for retreating/landing, and dair can actually be really good against certain recoveries. Up B spike is better for that, but harder to set up sometimes and doesn't last as long. I will say though, the fact that Fair and Bair don't autocancel and have really mediocre landing lag REALLY hurt him. If fair were autocancelable on short hop, he could shieldpoke potentially like Byleth's nair basically for free, and on a character like Ridley that would be insanely good. Bair is good, but then I look at Wolf, who can pull out like 2 bairs by the time Ridley gets one out and it kills just about as well. It's embarrassing.

Thanks for the mentions in the video! I agree he's very underrated but he does well into so many meta relevant characters Kazuya, Peach, Roy, Cloud, Aegis, Steve, Min Min, Lucina, Yoshi, etc: His only like REALLY BAD mus that u might need a secondary for are Samus, Sonic (it's rough, even after taking a game off Wrath) R.O.B, GnW, and Bayo, he has some other ones but he can just get such early kills and has the tools to fight back in those other mus.

@@bigtoblerone8446 doing well doesnt necessarily mean winning. Imo he beats kaz, cloud, lucina, yoshi, roy, goes even with aegis, min min, and is like barely losing vs steve. Barely losing to steve is awesome in this game

@@BenHendel so, the main thing is just using the ground speed that ridley does have to be able to manuver around things. Once ridley gets in on most zoners (that arent named Rob or Samus) they dont have enough range to kind of get us off of them. For example megaman in disadvantage we can cover his landings very well and kill him off 1 or 2 openings, young link he just has a sword which we can outrange if played right and ledge trap, gunner (lowkey really hard ima get back to you on that one). but yeah he has answers to zoners alot of the time, its just about being able to play slow enough to find those openings correctly and get those edgeguards and ledge traps

It's so underrated, and honestly a lot of people just heard the meme that the OST is bad and blindly believed it. It might not have AS many bangers as say, Prime, but genuinely what other Metroid game does? People complain about it not being "melodic enough" but I quite enjoyed how it was more ambient, creepy, methodical, thought-provoking. It fit the vibe of the game much better imo.

Shadow ball is better than charge shot in almost every way. Better frame data on both ends, KOs earlier, and has setups to consistently hit below ledge. Charge shot pretty much just travels faster so it's harder to react from across the stage on wifi.

I'm actually a little surprised you didn't talk about fireballs more. I've been playing Ridley since launch and I've been utilizing fireballs in the neutral a ton, specifically the single fireball. If you throw out a fireball in the neutral, that usually stops the opponent in their tracks and opens the door to an approach option.

I think Mewtwo and Ridley are kind of in the same boat. Both have very good tilts, aerials, smash attacks and advantage but they both suffer from a large hurtbox and poor disadvantage/lack of OoS options (aside from footstool shenanigans). Mewtwo obviously is more of a glass cannon than Ridley but in the right hands, they are both pretty good characters imo.

As a Ridley secondary (GnW main), I've found Young Link and Pikachu way worse to play against than GnW. Of course, I know GnW much better, but I feel like I just can't hit Pika and Young Link walls me out too hard.

ISTG as a Ridley main, it hugely irks me that people think the only/big thing holding him back is his weight. It simply is not and honestly ask yourself. Ridley is usually placed as a lower mid to low tier character. Is a higher weight really going to change that at all? He's the exact same weight as another big body, R.O.B., who is one of the best characters in Ultimate. Weight is FAR from Ridley's worries lmao.
