For Linus and anyone else that might be wondering, how you 3D scan something reflective, such as polished metal, the scanners use a bunch of little needles that measure dimensions. We have some at my current workplace. Keyence is the brand, though I warn you, they're not cheap haha. That's why the scan looks a little rough, as you can only fit so many needles next to each other. It's similar to those toys you used to find in stores that you could place your hand in and the pins made the shape of your hand. Take a lot of depth measurements close together and integrate basically and then you have a 3D model.
@Bobble84
@Bobble84 3 жыл бұрын
Can also be done using sprays such as graphite and talc, and then scanning with a laser scanner and cleaned after using an ultrasonic cleaner. It is made to sound way more complicated in this video then it really is. I have scanned many, much more complex items, which are glass with a phone app and powder technique. Specs are usually within 0.5% of the actual object and for a project such as this it would do just fine, but bravo to LTT team for the 10 million subs and for putting this diamond play button to good use. Would have just sat collecting dust otherwise.

Tip from someone who constantly has to scan reflective and see-through surfaces: mix plaster powder and rubbing alcohol, spread it in a very thin layer on the surface you want to scan. Wait for it to dry (or use a heat gun). Now you have a white, non-reflective surface which you can rinse off with plain water

@Foxi4Qnet
@Foxi4Qnet 3 жыл бұрын
@@suruadamable You absolutely can solder to aluminium without using high temperatures, but the oxide layer needs to be etched first with an aluminium-specific flux. The reason why the joint is patchy is because they "roughed it up" after the first failed attempt. That probably removed some of the oxide, so the solder flowed onto and stuck to some spots, but not others.

Scanning reflective materials like that is really quite simple, you just coat the surface with a paint/dye that won't reflect before you scan it then use a solvent to remove the paint/dye afterwards If that's not an option then make a mold of the item, use the mold to make a cast out of non-reflective material and 3D scan the cast

Hanging out with Linus must be like playing with that kid who's parents bought them every toy and its all so cool but nobody can decide which one to play with so you end up just being jealous and marveling at how lucky that kid is.

Was gonna say, dude painted houses to pay for PC parts before he entered the industry building PCs. He has been over his early rigs on the show they weren't outrageous mommy daddy money expensive. Worked his way up to product manager at NCIX with the idea of doing a tech tips show to help inform their customers on a fairly bewildering range of components via internet videos 1000s could watch rather than their ordering department having to walk customers through all the options and what even is a GHz one at a time. People liked the show. When it got popular enough he started his own company partially for money and partially cause NCIX understandably wasn't too keen on anyone getting into the downsides of flagship products they were trying to move or a verdict ever being that the performance gains of an upgrade didn't make sense money wise.

The 3D Scanning Process is called Photogrammetry and you cover shiny surfaces with chalk spray. Also polarizing lenses help.

That’s what I was thinking. If the lasers “reflect” like he said all he could have done was make the surface of the play button non reflective.

@@nickh2647 3D Scanners now days usually don't use lasers (LiDaR) anymore but instead reconstruct a 3D Model from a bunch of pictures using matching features in the pictures. (but if the thing reflects the matching features obviously also get hard to capture) :D

To 3D scan a shiny object you just spray it with developer, it’s just as easy as scanning anything else. Developer is like a matte spray paint that you can wipe off with a towel after the scan
