I Turned My Pomegranate Into a 5-1 Frankengranate

Over the past 2 years, I grafted four additional varieties onto my existing Wonderful pomegranate. I currently have Desertyni, Sirenevyi, Parfianka, and Eversweet on my tree, and I expect those grafts to flower and produce fruit in 2024.

Great video ! By the way "Sirenevyi"( stress on second syllable) means lilac colour ( russian).

multigraft: give your tree 3 scaffold branches equally thick, and graft on THOSE EQUALLY

That's one way to do it. I'm more interested in experimenting with different varieties. Once I decide what I like, I'll use scionwood from this tree, prune it way back, and regraft 👍

@@VelvetandToads it varies by tree. You'll have the most success grafting right before the tree wakes up / bud break. For my early ripening peaches, that's late January. For my Asian pears, that's March. February in Zone 10a is a safe bet, but again, it varies a bit

I ordered scions from them this year too. Great assortment at terrific prices (although I do wish they would provide descriptions of each variety). I bought Desertnyi, Medavyi Vasha, Eversweet and Azadi scions from them, and grafted them onto a year-old Wonderful pomegranate that I had. The Azadi graft failed, but the rest took and the plant is thriving. No flowers or fruit this year (since I pretty much eliminated the Wonderful branches which might have fruited). But I look forward to trying these 3 varieties next year or the year after that! I also have 3-year-old in-ground Wonderful and Parfianka trees fruiting this year, but unfortunately the Parfianka fruits keep splitting when edible but not fully ripe. 😏 Hoping it does better once it’s a little older and more fully established. I am in Zone 8b in the high desert of SoCal.

Any luck with it producing fruit? Mine is the size of a small SUV and I get about 80-100 pomegranates each year (assuming I don't hack away at it the season before)

Добрый день. Где живёте? Если вы не укрывание гранат на зиму,то прививки можно делать у самой земли. Я укрываю на зиму, у нас морозно и холодно и много снега зимой! В следующем сезоне возможно тоже сделаю прививку на гранате,но не у самой земли, а чуть выше, чтоб прививка не сломалась при укрытии на зиму (прижиме к земле)

I'm in San Diego, USA, climate zone 10b, so there's no worry of frost here. We have a Mediterranean climate where these trees do best.

If I could go back and do it over, for sure. It's not perfect, but it is where I first practiced grafting.

The 3 or 4 scaffolds grafting strategy is great when it works (other than sacrificing one or more year’s fruit). But it can be kind of disastrous if the grafts don’t take! I tried it on a pomegranate this year and 3 of the 4 grafts took, which was fine. Same story on a fig, where 3 of 4 grafts took and some rootstock branches grew out enough that I can cut THEM back next spring and graft on 2 more varieties. However, I also cut off 2 of 4 scaffolds from a year-old in-ground Violette de Bordeaux fig, grafting on 2 Pastilliere scions instead. Both of those grafts failed and the tree now has a very strange form. Hoping some more good scaffold branches emerge to replace the ones I cut off, but it hasn’t happened yet.
