I have designed a cheap system using 2L PET soda bottles which are about 110mm dia. By covering 1/2 in Al foil and then inserting into a parabolic mold and heating with paint stripper gun then applying air pressure , it forms a parabolic trough wit focus at centre line , and then insert a 19mm OD 3/4" black plastic pipe and align east west, in series strings. in this way it needs to be adjusted once per month aprox. and only about it's axis. This covers 110mm or more due to the distorted ellipse very cheaply and not affected my rain hail snow or wind.

Competing directly with solar PV is getting more and more difficult, current development suggests it will soon be difficult to compete with a combination of Solar PV, wind and batteries. I think it's great that someone that understands the problems explores the options, and explains to the world. I think it's more likely some new way of concentrated solar could have some niche application where it is advantageous, rather than competing with "conventional" industrial scale grid power generation. And, as we need a lot of energy as heat, better ways to collect and store heat energy might be as interesting as better ways to concentrate sunlight. maybe a phase change system, where a liquid is boiled in the receiver, and a gas carries the energy to the storage, both as latent and potential heat. Not only can that expansion "power" the heat transport, but it would also be possible to convert part of the heat energy to power.
@SapioiT Жыл бұрын
One usage for the heat without turning it into electricity would be to make greenhouses in colder places, concentrating sunlight and storing heat for crops to grow even in harsh winters. And in hot climates, the sunlight can be concentrated to shade almost completely underneath, with the little light passing through being diffused by frosty/cloudy/scratched plastic to act like a neon which to give light to the crops below the mirrors. This would make the shaded areas colder/cooler, useful for growing crops, and maybe even useful for housing. And not only that, but large (meters/feet in diameter) pipes can be used to send humid air from the sea, through the pipes, reheated by concentrated sunlight, and released into hot-and-dry areas, ideally released close to mostly-shaded farmland.

Any chance solar tracking will catch up and make a difference?
@fishyerik10 ай бұрын
@@jichaelmorgan3796 For the cost per kWh generated over the life cycle of the system, tracking became pointless, about 20 years ago, as adding more panels became cheaper about that time. The big reason is that solar panels are extremely reliable, over a very long time. Solar PV has become much cheaper, and better since then, so even if there has been significant development in electronics, solar PV has improved so much more. Under certain circumstances tracking can still make sense, as in when maximum output from a limited area is required, or if the mechanics can be made incredibly cheap somehow, like rotating whole systems of floating solar panels to track the sun.

Not many companies developing solar power solutions are as focused on low total system cost to the degree you are. Only when solar is cheaper than fossil fuels will we make significant progress reducing fossil fuel emissions. Anyone who tells you different is selling you something. This is a brilliant idea. It could be used to create troughs as well as dishes, no?
@yasirrakhurrafat1142 Жыл бұрын
Fossil fuels are a requirement. Mind you I love electricity. But recently I've had an admiration for people wanting to improve the engine side of things. If they're making promising, practical, and useful gains. I've in fact come up with certain strategies myself. Solar and wind.. both should be optimised for cost, practicality, resiliency, longevity and availability. So should engines. Engines are going to indeed be overrated for the poor performance they provide. And even more so when with slight.. minor improvements. I'm planning on making major improvements. Not to promote fossil fuel usage. But atleast if you're gonna use it anyways.. you might as well waste less. And get more performance. Wish this practically illiterate man ( me ) on his impossible endavour. And may he come up with something that may not be irrelevant.

@sergiy Could the wooden poles that you use to alter the seasonal height of the mirror, be replaced with upcycled umbrella shafts, which are disposed of widely but have a very useful telescopic function for this purpose? An estimated 1 billion umbrellas are broken and thrown away each year - this is enough to circle the earth 18 times, build 25 Eiffel Towers with the metal components, and cover New York City with the fabric. That means that they are cheap and widely available.

Pressed metal mirrors, in mass it should be cheap, easy to weld mounting posts and any other necessary thing directly on them or just use bolts. Anyway mass production of base parts from metal sheets that get formed, including hands that hold the heat receiver should be cheapest while resisting heavy hail, very long life included. Also suggesting automation with Arduino like microcontroller and motors can used very sparsely with length adjuster when all is tied together with rope or metal wire, should find out the best motor power and gear ratio for cheapest option, very tiny and cheap motors could be used with very high gear ratio because there is no hurry. Special manufacturing line should make it very affordable in mass, motorized system should eliminate most upkeep cost also. :)

If very strong winds or hail comes around, I can rapidly bring it inside the barn for protection. I have enough lifepo4 batteries to keep my refrigerator turned on for an entire week of overcast, aka shitty weather. Those strange windy/hail happenings only occurs once or twice a year. I am well off that I don't pay for any type of insurance - that money buys me more lifepo4.

i think what you propose may only be cost-effective on natural landscape which has already right orientation, facing south obviously, or may have rocky base. Moving land is not cheap and it seems like scale is what makes technology cost effective. I have sloped terrain where i will make use of your tech and let you know my findings. Here I would suggest to use rock instead of clay, which deteriorate under influence of water, snow, wind. Generally if the substrate is rock-based and shallow, an even probably cheaper option would be to dig a hole to the level where base rock is(lets assume its shallow roughy 0.5m) and use same material rock for creating wall/terrace. Definitely a tech which when conditions are met can be very cost effecctive but my assumption is its not for every and any cnditions.

Crescent Dunes Solar Energy Project failure of this project Disappointed me but also solved many questions in my brain I would say mirror energy would be very much more suitable for warm water than 24h electricity due to high cost of steam engine parts ,heat storage plus maintaining effeciency and repairing cost. if that make sense I have seen low temprature stirling engine doing great job it should be working with medium water temprature from parabolic mirrors at least in the day hours.

just pour a concrete ground dish, instead of all that just use a soot blimp to collect hot air from sun. yep solar heat will float the blimp automatically and have minimum material per surface area and volume of hot air. there is no requirement for focus point and the hot air can be pushed like AC hot air flow from the blimp balloon ground attachment point fan. most of heat is used to heat houses and only part is used as electricity. there can be a blimp inner thin wall pipe to get the top side hot air pulled down to ac systems.

@boopfer38710 ай бұрын
So the goal is only heating a known thermal mass, id think that once this mass was to the target that means to insulate and maintain temprature would be of big interest. In vietnam we have vacumn solar heaters that are very efficient so having a thermal mass and a curculation of the cooler portion going thru the loop to be re heated. The bigger the mass the lower the variation and loss. Oil in a gravel mass the more dense the substraight the better. All say buried deeper would isolate from surface temps.

The reason you move the whole mirror isn't to just keep the focal point aligned with the collector, but also to maximise the solar flux on the dish. As the angle between the mirror and sun changes, the effective area of the mirror goes down, it is maximises by keeping the mirror pointing directly at the sun. I'd be curious to see how much this reduced efficiency affects your cost/kWh calculations. I'd expect it's still significantly cheaper to have an extremely low cost fixed mirror, though I can't imagine it would add much cost to build a simple frame anyway.
@sergiyyurko8668 Жыл бұрын
This problem was explored experimentally at the end of my previous video. 1 sq. m of a fixed mirror produces 2-3 times less energy than a moving one. Therefore, it should be 3-5 times cheaper (for example, 15 dollars per square meter)
