I turn my morning coffee into a filling breakfast - I dilute a tsp of instant coffee (vanilla, maple syrup or chocolate Little's are my favorites) into hot water, add either milk (1% fat) or oat milk, sweeten with hazelnut flavoring , caramel syrup, sugarfree vanilla suryp or cocoa drink powder, and finish with 100-150 ml of unflavored or vanilla flavor whey protein. I blend it up and drink it on the way to work. I rarely eat before 9 in the morning so this super tasty coffee keeps me going without getting hangry. I never feel guilty over it and with my ED background that is saying alot.

If I’m bothering with recovery, I want to be healthy. And I certainly don’t want to see someone doing what I fear most and binging on the foods that I don’t allow myself for fear of doing the same. And it feels even scarier knowing that sugary cereal is my to go binge food, so it feels so good to have an option that can make this more gentle on me. Thank you so much. Keep doing this with more fear foods please!
@theprousteffect97172 жыл бұрын
I notice that a lot of these trigger foods are ones that are processed, highly palatable, and heavily demonized by diet culture. It makes perfect sense why people would have difficulty moderating them. Of course they taste good and are easy to overeat anyway, but because they're so heavily demonized, we can develop the scarcity mindset while eating them. Our consumption of them becomes a "naughty," "sinful" activity, or only done when we're binge-eating. So if we've grown up with diet culture and/or been heavily exposed to it throughout our lives (like so many of us have), we never learn that these foods can be included in a healthy diet when eaten alongside more satiating, health-promoting foods. Including these "trigger" foods in a day of healthy eating just makes them seem like...regular foods lol. Watching someone eating this way is very satisfying and completely shifts one's perspective. Thank you so much for making these kinds of videos that are very helpful for those of us revocovering from disordered eating. I'd go so far as to say it's healing to watch.

Love this video! what a liberating message. When I was deep in my eating disorder and food addiction I was afraid of all types of food! But the truth is, disordered eating is not ABOUT THE FOOD. It's about what's driving us to food in the first place. Once I addressed what was really going on at a deeper level, my relationship with food normalized. Today I eat the foods that feel good in my body and I'm constantly adding new foods in. There is so much info out there about abstinence as the only way to be free from food addiction but I feel like all that does is keep us in fear of food.

One more combination that I personally love to do is cake with Skyr on the side! It's super high-protein and very fluffy, so it's a lot like a slightly tangier and denser whipped cream and goes particularly well with chocolate cake. Cake used to be a huge fear food for me, specifically at social gatherings (well, it's been a while), however since my family or my partner's family are usually the ones hosting and I tend to have some Skyr around and a small slice of cake with a dollup of fluffy white stuff on the side doesn't look weird to anyone. If there's fruit (from the garden) I usually also take a piece on the side to add a bit of fibre as well!

Abbey I discovered your channel a few years ago. For 10 years of my life I suffered from high cholesterol and then eventually prediabetes in my 20s. I can finally say in the last 2 years my cholesterol is normal, and the prediabetes is gone. Learning to cook, following the hunger crushing combo, and eating at restaurants minimally has been life-changing for me. Thank you for what you do!

I’m literally watching this after I had started binge eating chocolate chip banana muffins I had made. I was upset but I find your videos so soothing. And I realized I needed to ask myself Why I did that and I think it’s because I rarely bake and I also have food allergies (eggs, dairy, nuts) so regular baked goods from stores and bakeries are not accessible to me so I think it may be because I am not around delicious baked goods on a regular basis to normalize them being around and not in scarcity for me. Kinda crazy I’m just realizing this. Also OMG making that Oreo shake dairy free with maybe some tofu??
@tezvi62253 жыл бұрын

hey Kelly! I find that muffins freeze quite well and then you can just thaw them in the microwave and its really tasty! so you can make a bunch of muffins you like and can eat with your allergies and then just have one whenever you feel like it :) maybe that will help with the scarcity feeling! also, good for you having these realizations/reflections, that is always the first step in changing your behaviors, I am also working on things like that. Good luck :)

@leah I don’t eat these so much in the white version (sometimes I do) I just use alternatives so wholewheat pasta (keep you full for longer), sweet potato (again no white carb crash & full of vitamin c), rice either brown or if white I add a stock to flavour and peas/sweet corn/etc to make it healthier choice! At times I just want white bread for toasting or a big white jacket potato (the jacket/skin is good fibre) but mostly I choose healthier alternatives. This helped me battle anorexia and I am now healthy in mind and body with a healthy attitude to food. Hope this helps x
@leahsmilezzzzzzz3 жыл бұрын
@@darnitthelma4247 I have to admit that I really don’t like the whole wheat alternatives. For me they’re unfortunately not a helpful replacement because it just feels like restriction and pushes me into scarcity mentality. Obviously I’m thrilled that it works for you. I am so happy I found your channel. I really really hope you make more of these fear food videos because they are so incredibly helpful! I struggle so hard with the all or nothing mentality, and you have found a way for me to understand balance. Every other 'diet' or nutrition plan is NO SWEETS AT ALL, and I have such a sweet tooth that all the restriction from these other plans has just made me uncontrollable around sugar. Pasta is easy. Make the pasta the small part, and you add chicken or tuna (protein), parmesan (protein, fat), tomatoes, onion, spinach, etc. (fiber). Don't overcook the later. Chips are harder, though you can do tzatziki sauce (yogurt, cukes, olive oil) as a "dip". I go to restaurant that serves fries (okay chips), tzatziki, with olive oil and vinegar.

Thank you so much for these great snack and meal ideas! A question: is there a difference in terms of satiety in healthy fats vs the fats that are contained in these trigger foods? I get that there are nutrients in the healthy fat containing food that will nourish us, but solely in terms of crushing hunger, is there a difference?
@thefactanonverba3 жыл бұрын
Great question.
@muzainahsaffdar55533 жыл бұрын
I feel like the healthy fats are usually incorporated in more filling meals whereas the "unhelathy" ones aren't so that might make a difference in the satiety associated with them.
@natashaonis3 жыл бұрын
@@muzainahsaffdar5553 I’m just wondering in the context of this video, where you may be starting with a “fear food” that has a lot of fat (eg. ice cream) do you actually have to add the healthy fat component to make it a hunger crushing combo? If you have fiber, nutrients etc. from the other foods you add to the ice cream, are eg. nut butters necessary for satiety? I googled a bit and I found one study that says monounsaturated fats such as those found in walnuts and salmon are more satiating, but I think just looking at one study might not give me the whole picture. I think it could be interesting for Abbey to break down how the different types of fats measure up in terms of keeping us full.
@BeatrixBrenneman3 жыл бұрын
She does this when she talks about the bagel and I'd say the idea also applies to fats. The bagel is a "fear food" but also has fibre and she includes it when talking about the hunger-crushing-combo. xx

@therabbithat3 жыл бұрын
Imho If the whole 30 list is more varied than what you eat right now it could be really fun. If it's more restrictive I think it's unhelpful. A lot of people only eat like 2 or 3 types of vegetable and it would be a wonderful month of discovery for them, once they also eat stuff not on the list so they don't come to associate the new vegetables with miserable cravings for say, oreos. Plus if you suddenly up your fibre without warning (deleted deleted) lava. Ha ha Anyway if you do decide to do it I hope you have a great month, however it goes!
