For those wondering why everything is so far away making you drive long distances. When the game first came out you had to do every mission in addition to the main story quest to level up. Though this made leveling very tedious at times it also made the pacing of the main story quest a bit better since it was designed around players doing all the quests on the way. So the main story quest was usually at the very end of each zone and you would fight your way to it, making it feel like you fought your way through a warzone. Now that you only need to do the main quest to level up you can just cruise past the entire warzone on your mount or stroll right into an enemy stronghold, kill a guy or collect an object and then leave. It is kind of a double edged sword. Either long tedious leveling but with better pacing and world building or fast leveling but the story feels a bit more rushed and not as satisfying.

the quest design and pacing of this game if you do all the sidequests as intended honestly puts most RPGs to shame, classic singleplayer ones included. You arrive on a planet with a story quest, and on the way to the objective you naturally come across every sidequest and complete it on the way to your main goal, barely, if ever, needing to detour, and by completing these sidequests you actually learn more about the planet, your main goal, how everything interacts with each other, and get to be involved in all the important conflicts and events of the setting that may or may not be related to your personal main goal, making you feel like you have a real presence in the world. Absolutely brilliant

Even in the best singleplayer RPGs there's an unending amount of sidequests that require you to travel to the other side of the map for some reason, completely derailing you, and if there's any sense of immersion regarding travelling long distances and spans of time it completely shatters that as well. With Old Republic, everything feels like one single cohesive story, sidequests require only that you fight X amount of enemies in an area you'd be passing through and fighting those enemies anyway on the way to your main goal, or that you make a slight detour to an adjacent area and in the process discover some minor plotline that is narratively, if not by gameplay, related to your main goal. Plenty of RPGs have more interesting quests, better stories, etc, but in terms of overarching design of quest progression, pacing, and cohesion i've not found anything that beats it. In Old Republic I often forgot which of the objectives i was doing were technically for a sidequest and wich were technically for the main story, because all the sidequests felt like they were a natural and intrinsic part of how i reached my goal, and were all in the same general area as that goal. In the Witcher 3 i occasionally groaned at having to go back track, or stop my story progression to go to a completely different region of the map only to later come back and get back to what i was doing

@mandak kart i'm not entirely sure if you mean that the quests themselves were very samey from planet to planet, or the structure of "pick up sidequest on the way to main quest" was samey, though either way that's fair. I suppose it's down to preference. I'd rather have the same structure on every single planet that feels organic and convenient, than constantly having to go to different places and waste irl time as well as, theoretically, in-game time. Aside from wasting real time walking around, as i mentioned, my immersion can very quickly break when i end up going on a fetch quest on the other side of the continent where it would realistically take me weeks to travel, only to then come back to the main quest and everyone act like no time passed - especially if the current events are supposed to be very urgent. And as for the quests themselves being very samey, i mostly agree. But like i said, the boring quests ("go here, press button" , or "go here, kill x enemies" were always on the way to where i was going anyway, so they didn't bother me, and the ones that were different were interesting enough to me. For example, the noble girl who wants to join the bug hivemind on alderaan is still in my mind to this day
